    Mondoñedo - OXistral - 10mls

    April 23 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

Well, after 4hrs 23mins sleep I am seriously debating the benefits of an Albergue!! Sharing with someone on their phone -on loudspeaker - until 1.15am is NOT cool 😑

Today was a day of 2 halves.
This morning we walked up a hill. Ha ha, we laughed; it can't be that steep. It was! It was a relentless accent that just kept going UP. No plateaus, no cheeky dips downwards, just UP, and more UP and then more UP for 7 desperate miles!!! We didn't speak to each other; we withdrew into our own minds and somehow found our own motivation to keep climbing. Somehow, someway, we did it 🎉
That said, if somebody should ask us to join them on another Camino Norte, I would have to warn them that for this stage - we are taking the bus 😅!!

This afternoon, we arrived at our destination, Gontán, and headed to a cafe for beer, coffee and cake. The plan was to finish here. However, the caffeine and sugar kick changed our minds and we pressed on a further 3 miles to Oxistral. We returned to lovely forest walks, green farmland and flowering lanes. Well worth the extra miles. We stumbled across a beautifully restored albergue, with original medieval features jostling alongside modern conveniences. The host offered us an evening meal along with our beds, so we snapped his hand off and settled in for the evening.

    Villamartin Grande - Mondoñedo - 13 mls

    April 22 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

Early start walking above the morning mist. It appeared we were looking out at the sea!! Once we descended through the mist, the sun came out, and it was a lovely clear day.

Another day of forest walks and hard climbs, but with the sun dappling through the trees and the music of the birdsong, it has felt quite magical all day.

First stop was the town of Lorenzà.
The 10th century benedictine Monasterio de San Salvador was very impressive (built by the same architect who built Santiagos cathedal).

After a quick lunch, we again climbed a hill to make our way to:-

Mondoñedo - a very classically old town, with cobbled streets leading to a breathtaking square dominated by the Cathedral. We wondered the deserted streets to find many abandoned shops alongside ancient religious buildings (seminars) all nestled in the mountains surrounding us, giving everything a historical charm.

Stayed tonight at a lovely, well maintained alberge attached to the Montero hotel. Met a German lady from Frankurt walking 30km per day and a Cuban man searching for his family's history!

Ribadeo to Villamartin Grande - 11.5 mls

    April 21 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

Back on the road today and we are both feeling positive - despite it pouring with rain!

Breakfast at a cafe before we leave is coffee/tea and huge slabs of cake!! How are Spaniards so slim??

Forest tracks, eucalyptus trees all around and beautiful hillsides full of forestry. Definitely a county of trees!
A beautiful walk but again up continuous steep hills and sharp drops. Hard going with rain on and off all day.

No bars or shops on route, so we were thrilled when we got to Villamartin Grande at 4pm, after a particularly gruelling climb up the hill, and found a cafe with cold beers 🍻
A lovely family run hotel next door so we stayed.

    Velotürli

    April 21 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

Mittagessen ( Gambas al ajillo - endlich 🤭) in Rinlo
Ach ja: das Brillenetui ist fertig geworden 🙃

  • Day 18

    Ribadeo - 3 days off

    April 20 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 13 °C

3 Rest days in Ribedeo due to Easter weekend. No public transport, shops outside of town and most albergues closed!! It's a main holiday for Spaniards, so pensions and small hotels all full too. Plus - we are very tired, Pam's heel hurts and Mikes calf and feet have had enough 😴

Day 1 (Friday)- Weather awful, very wet, windy and cold. Went to watch the 'Stations of the cross' procession. The service was held outside the church and was quite small. It took 1 hour, but we were wearing packs and standing still, so it felt much longer!! The statues were dressed in robes, and their arms moved to bless everyone, so it was a bit creepy!
Hotel EO let us check-in early.
Went for a walk in the rain and met Frank and Carmella again at a bar; we sadly said our goodbyes as they leave the Camino today. They will return next year to finish it. Coffee and cakes for tea as everywhere else closed.
Back to hotel for the evening as it was raining heavily.

Day 2 (Saturday)- Pam had to see a pharmacist re her heel pain - support sock and CBD cream!!! I may like this solution 😂

Rain relentless today so we went to supermarket for supplies for the room. Had to trawl the town to buy a corkscrew!! Spent rest of day in our room, completing journal, watching Netflix and resting.

    Day 3 (Easter Sunday)
The rain stopped for the morning - hurrah!!! Walked around the waterside to get fresh air - we are a bit stir crazy with so little activity!
Watched the Easter service procession - very good. Interesting that people are the same the world over. Mothers chivvying their children to behave, children in the procession messing about and being hurried to their 'positions'. Grandparents getting in the way of the procession to take photos of the show and officious men in gowns growling at everyone!
    Made phone calls home 😍
Afternoon, heavy rain and wind again, so headed into the bar to plan our next stages on the Camino - yay, exited again!

  • Day 14

    Playa de las Catedrales

    April 18 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

    Tapia de Casariego

    April 12 in Spain ⋅ 🌧 15 °C

Another good night of sleep 🥰
I hiked around 10km to the first bigger city to have my well-deserved breakfast there.
Afterwards, I needed to choose once more between the inland-route and the coast-route...and guess which one I selected 😊Read more

    Nordatlantik / Foz ⚓️🌺

    March 31 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 15 °C

    Yesterday in Spain ⋅ 🌧 13 °C

    May 10 in Spain ⋅ 🌧 14 °C
