    Gourmet Hike + Dinner Repeat

    July 19, 2024 in Switzerland ⋅ ☁️ 75 °F

We spent a little time at the hotel gym this morning after breakfast, but were careful not to overdo it so that we were fresh for the main activity of the day -- a guided hike.

Our guide met us in the hotel lobby at 11, and we were thrilled to see that he was bringing his dog along for the hike. In fact, he introduced her (named Shooki? Jeuqis?) as our guide for the tour, which we initially took as a charming comment, but indeed, she ended up leading the way for the majority of the hike.

We hopped in in the guide's van and rode about 25 minutes east until we pulled off and parked on a treacherous roadside cliff. Soon we were off. He spoke little English, which was just fine as we took in the views and watched our doggie guide plop down into every water source to cool off, before shaking off the water and running ahead to resume her guide duties. She made the hike all the better, as we also thought fond thoughts about our own doggies at home.

We were pleased that our guide evaluated our fitness as above average, and so elected to take us on the longer and more challenging loop. We stopped near the top of the climb for picnic on a large flat boulder, and simple (but gourmet) selection of bread, meat, cheese, and pickled veggies. In total we hiked a bit over 5 miles, with many enchanting waterfalls spotted along the way.

Once we got back we collapsed into bed for our now-standard afternoon nap, and then enjoyed the rest of the afternoon again at the resort pool and sauna.

We loved our dinner so much last night that after evaluating our options we decided to go back to the same Italian restaurant. It proved to be the right choice, as the owner was thrilled to have us back and delighted us with freebies of amuse bouche, pallette cleansers, and grappa/amaro. We got the same Gorgonzola gnocchi to share, and Laura doubled down the chicken dish we shared last night, while I branched out and had the pork belly with ratatouille. We made sure to save room for the dessert we had to decline last night, and enjoyed the 4 flavors of sorbet and home made glace.

    Hängebrücke Hohstalden

    June 19, 2024 in Switzerland ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

A quiet day today. Both of us have got quite stiff legs.

We borrowed a couple of the free campsite bikes this morning and popped down to the local Coop to buy something for lunch and dinner.

After lunch we caught the bus a couple of miles up the valley to cross (and the re-cross) the Hostalde Suspension Bridge, a 155m long and 37m high footbridge across the Engstlige river. We then walked back along the river.

    The bridge is quite bouncy!

Big storm this evening but it cleared up quite quickly. Weather is turning though. ☹️. Moving on to France tomorrow.

    Frutigen

    June 17, 2024 in Switzerland ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

We’re at Camping Grassi in Frutigen. Lovely little campsite with glorious views and walking distance from Frutigen town centre, currently having a beer at the outside bar opposite the Hotel Simplon. Surrounded by mountains.

Paying the local tourist tax gives us free access on public transport (including cable cars/chair lifts) so just trying to work out how to use it tomorrow. Think we’ll stay here at least two nights.

I know I said that yesterday’s drive was amazing but I think today’s might have been even better…. certainly more unusual.

We tend to follow Google maps (which I have to say, has been a bit hit and miss, especially in Italy). Anyway, we stopped for a short walk this morning, and when we got back in the van, Google said it was altering the route because of a road closure.

We followed the new route around multiple hairpins up into the mountains and then took a sharp left onto what we thought was a toll road. The toll was 27 Swiss Franks which is much more than we have been paying but there wasn’t much else we could do so we paid it. Then we followed the car in front, thinking we’d be driving thru a tunnel, but ended up driving onto a train - literally onto a train! Weird. Then we had to sit for about 10 or 15 minutes as the train took us thru a completely dark tunnel - probably about the distance from Chippenham to Bath Spa. Turns out we were on the Lötschberg Car Train. Amazing.

    Global Panoramic Express

    March 24 in Switzerland ⋅ ☁️ 7 °C

Today I leave Interlaken for Montreux on the Global Panoramic Express. I reserved first class, which was not much more expensive than the second! Off to Sweissimmen first. Arriving at Sweissimmen, I forgot why this would be good. I think it was for the hiking but sadly my knee is pretty sore! I am having a nice coffee in a beautiful cake shop and then going to see if I can possibly get the earlier train. If not....sit in the sunshine and admire the view!Read more

    December 21, 2024 in Switzerland ⋅ ☁️ 0 °C

Oats, water, soya milk, seeds, peanut butter, raspberries, blueberries, cherries, and banana. Coffee.

Pretty much every day of the trip.

Sara has an apricot instead of banana and cherries. And she has tea rather than coffee.Read more

Bisse Walk & Raclette à la Suisse

    June 11, 2023 in Switzerland ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

It was a relaxed Sunday after the party. We explored Sierre on foot with the whole gang in the morning, walking through the hilly town filled with vines to Lac de Géronde. After lunch and some napping, we headed up to higher country to walk along a bisse, the irrigation canals that bring water slowly down the steep hillsides from the glaciers to the valley floor. It was the perfect place to hike in the heat of the day because of the abundance of shade along the bisse. For dinner we got to experience raclette the Swiss way, a whole wheel of cheese cooked by the fire and served one serving at a time once the cheese is perfectly melted - delicious!Read more

    Tag 1

    January 26, 2020 in Switzerland ⋅ ⛅ 4 °C
