    Scenic Route Not So Scenic

    December 11, 2023 in the United States ⋅ 🌙 12 °C

    It was...a day.

So far, gluten free is not much of thing here in Texas. Tried going to a gluten-free bakery in Austin. Turns out, they are not open to the public on a regular basis. They sell at weekend farmers markets and such. (It's Tuesday.)

South Congress Avenue - or SoCo as the Austin locals call it - is an eclectic area of boutiques and restaurants. A "must see," articles said, but we found it underwhelming.

In the SoCo area of Austin, Michelle saw a sandwich board saying THC is legal now. She thought that was interesting because cannabis has been legal in Canada for a number of years. Turns out, "legal" is stretching it. (Michelle later got into a conversation in San Antonio with a tea shop owner. It is NOT legal in Texas.)

In the city of Austin and its county, they have decriminalized it for personal use. So hopefully no unsuspecting tourists are taking that advertising store up on it and getting themselves in trouble abroad.

Earl's new SIM card in his phone also stopped working in Austin. Two and a half hours' of tech support later, we left the AT&T store (cell service provider) . Yep, that kind of day.

Stopped for so-so barbecue. Came back to our resort home via Google maps, missing major turns, twice. Went home on what was probably a nice daytime scenic route of twisty turny hill country roads, but we were unfortunately driving in the dark.

Holidays can be like real life, I guess. It's not all sunshine and roses.

Hopefully, tomorrow will be a better day...

    Guadalupe River State Park

    December 11, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

This was about a 45-minute drive from our resort. Huge beautiful park. Includes a lovely well-treed campground with pristine facilities.

We did the Prairie, Painted Bunting, Barred Owl, and Live Oaks Trail Loop. A long-winded name for a pretty trail. (The All Trails app came in handy, as usual).

Bit of an arid landscape. Small trees. Lots of rock. Great two-hour hike at a winter temperature of 18 degrees Celsius.

    Es geht loooos...oder nicht?

    September 20, 2019 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 32 °C

Read more

    The world's largest service station

    September 23, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 32 °C

Buc-ee's. The world's largest service station. They are correct that everything is bigger in Texas.
With a BBQ food section, fresh nuts, fudge, bakery, 120 gas pumps, 1,000 parking spots and a 68,000 foot store.

We just used the toilets and grabbed lunch here.

    Sturm am Canyon Lake

    January 27, 2019 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

Everything is bigger in Texas!

Gruene, Tx (A district in New Bruenfels)

    April 9 in the United States ⋅ 🌙 24 °C

The morning was a bit chilly, but we had plenty of covers, so we stayed warm and cozy. We spent the night at McCoy's Farm Supply parking lot. We left around 7:00 and headed to Summer Moon Coffee House. We enjoyed our coffee, and I had a breakfast taco—a popular breakfast choice in this region.

By 7:45, I was ready to start the day's ride. I had just under 40 miles to cover today, and I was unsure about the roads. I knew I’d encounter some wind. The forecast indicated the first few hours would be relatively calm, with the wind picking up around 10:00. It seems the Windy Family didn’t get the memo—it picked up much earlier than expected. I battled wind in my face or on my side for most of the day. The 38 miles felt much longer with the constant gusts. I was grateful I’d hammered out 58 miles yesterday, leaving a shorter distance for today. For most of the ride, I was on well-traveled roads, some with little or no shoulder. At one point, a "big boy in a big truck" decided I needed less room and veered onto the small shoulder I was hugging as he passed. I hope he felt satisfied because I certainly wasn’t. For about eight miles, the road was quite bumpy, and the shoulder was even worse. I rode on the road until I noticed a vehicle approaching from behind, then moved onto the shoulder until it passed. Fun times!

Here’s the thing: riding on country roads can be absolutely beautiful, while riding on main roads can be downright ugly. It’s surprising how much beauty we hide behind equipment, machinery, factories, signs, and trash. I’ve truly enjoyed the past few days’ rides because of the scenery, though I’ve been tempted to complain about the hills. To be honest, there weren’t many photo-worthy moments along today’s roads. There are plenty of metaphors hidden in the details I’ve described—I’ll leave it to you to find them.

I arrived in Gruene (pronounced "green") before noon and was able to rest for a while. After my nap, we sat outside and enjoyed the cool breeze while shaded from the hot sun. Gruene is an old cotton town that has transformed into a tourist hub for northern San Antonio. We chose it as a destination because Dana’s cousin and his wife were meeting us for an early dinner. We met around 3:00 and spent three hours eating and talking. I didn’t know them very well before, but it was wonderful getting to know them—we had a great time together. They’ll be heading out to Virginia in the morning and wanted to get home early enough to finish packing for their trip.

As you may have noticed, I’ve adjusted our route slightly for several reasons. This new route cuts off about a hundred miles and has fewer hills as we head west. Of course, as I mentioned earlier, the downside is sacrificing some of the natural beauty.

Hobby Lobby is our overnight host. Tomorrow, we’ll continue pressing west and head toward Boerne (pronounced "Bernie").

"If you see someone without a smile today, give them yours!"

    Canyon Lake, TX

    March 24, 2024 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 63 °F

Our friends Amanda and Jeff came from NYC to meet up with us. We're staying in Canyon Lake. Texas is in a drought so the water level is extremely low. I believe these are trees that were submerged when the lake was formed by damning the river.Read more
