Carrying British goods (😉) along sections of the Santa Fe Trail (a historical trading route), from the Great Plains to the Rocky Mountains. Timezone #3.
US 400 W / 287 N / i70 W: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Miles: 373 (of 2,323)
The 'Heartland Expressway' across the vast plains takes us to the mountain backdrop of central Colorado.
Day seventeen: After getting the hell out of Dodge, we stock up on snacks for another 6+ hour journey. We make a few stops, including: Amache National Historic Site (1 of 10 WW2 Japanese internment camps) and Brew Unto Others (much needed coffee and cinnamon rolls) in the city of Lamar. We spot snow for the first time as we climb to 1,639m above sea level (1,000m more than the night before), and see rolling hills and mountains for the first time in over 700 miles.
Day eighteen: we take on the Flatirons in Boulder - 5 slab-like peaks rising above a pine forest (for that fresh car smell) - 8km hike, 450m+ elevation gain. The reward comes in the shape of beautiful views, and post-hike, grass-fed beef burgers at local institution, The Sink. We take a stroll on Pearl Street to see downtown Boulder, and round out the afternoon hiding inside from the storm ⛈️

Day nineteen: As the snow falls, on a cold and grey Colorado morning... We head out to explore the roads and towns of the Rocky Mountains. The sun breaks the clouds as we soak in the epic views, from Estes Park gateway to Mary's Lake (where Jack takes a dip, despite its glacial temperature). Wildlife spottings include Stellar Jays, with bright blue feathers, and Mule Deers, with their donkey-like ears. Elk jerky is on the menu today, as well as a visit to the local pie shop in Lafayette.Meer informatie
