Cradle Cove

Up and had a coffee and nice breakfast, then started a long letter. Had a long chat with Brian. It is only a few days before I must leave — so many unknowns, but also so much that has touched my heart this trip.
We pulled up anchor and headed for Cradle Cove in the morning. It was a fun and frolicking ride to the cove. When we got here there were only a few boats so we spent some time on the transom, and then took showers. Once back on deck there were XX in the cove — we went to the rooftop to watch them. They were a beautiful sight. We shared some poetry,
had a great meal, danced (a fairly regular occurrence on this trip), chatted with my brother, listened to the guitar and called it another night. I am truly going to miss this life, miss this man and his brilliance — feeling so blessed to have had this extraordinary experience!Read more

Holdsbrook Island

We got up, did some boat chores, enjoyed the warmth, and eventually headed into the boatyard to pay for the mooring, and slipped away from Benjamin River up the Eggemoggin Reach, put out the sails and turned off the engine for a few hours. We sailed under Deer Isle Bridge and rounded the point, but the lobster pots got to intense so we turned on the engine again and motor sailed to Holdsbrook Island.
From our anchorage we could see Castine, but unfortunately we dragged most of the night. Always an unpleasant sound listening to the anchor drag!Read more

Travelling south now, in the direction of home

Or as Fergus put it:
'We are closer to home than Los Angeles', the starting point of our trip.

At least it stopped raining along the route.
Stopping in various places along Penobscot Bay to marvel at the scenery.

Went to the historic village of Castine, which has been established in the early 17th century and has been flying the flags of France, Britain, the Netherlands and the US.

Got caught out by a sharp short(ish) shower while walking in Witherle Woods.

Spotting wildlife along the road ...

Stopping in Belfast to take a stroll across the Memorial Bridge over the Passagassawakeag River and along Harbor Walk in the hope for an ice-cream. But sadly the shop was shut.

Day 17
Hope Apple Orchard

After breakfast we went to a nearby apple orchard to pick early season apples. Besides the ones you picked and paid for you were free to try one, but as the kids didn't eat theirs completely, I've had 2 and a half. They were decent but not very intense, especially not as sour as I like apples. The orchard also had raspberries to pick, but there weren't a lot of ripe ones.
Afterwards we went to a yearly picnic from the church with a big BBQ, salads and desserts. There was also some live music and games for the kids. So we had a very entertaining afternoon ☺️

There's also some news on the van. It left Liverpool by Thursday night and is on the way straight to Halifax now 🤩 It's supposed to arrive there on Thursday and it takes two working days to get through customs, so we're planning to pick it up by the 19th of September.Read more

Arrived at our destination for the day - a place called Bucksport. It's a town across the Penobscot River estuary from Fort Knox and the Penobscot Narrows Bridge.

There isn't any particular reason for us to stay here apart from 'it's on the way'

No change in weather though - still raining.
But can't sit inside all day. So better get out an stretch our legs.Read more

River and ocean

Got woken up early today because we got to go rafting which starts at 9am. We got instructions and our gear and drove with an old school bus to the starting place. We sat in a boat with 10 people total, an instructor, us four and another family of five that was really nice. I was scared for life but did enjoy it a little eventually. We did a short trail and got off the boat earlier than the others. We than got to our car and drove to the coast of Maine. I sat in front because yay car sickness. Eventually we arrived in Belfast where we were welcomed warmly by our airbnb hosts. They recommended us some place to eat lobster so we go there. The food was amazing, even the grilled swordfish. We walked around the town for a bit and got back to the house. We talked a bit with the hosts and ended up having a fire in their yard and talked all nightRead more
