Day 465: Rock Carvings of Tanum

    May 25, 2018 in Sweden ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

Back on the World Heritage trail now! Had a slight lie in then headed to the airport to pick up our car for the next month. Since we are planning on a lot of camping I was hoping for a good car, and we lucked out with a brand new Volvo XC40. Lots of space, lots of power, and top of the line equipment as well so it should be quite nice!

To give it a test run we drove a couple of hours north of Gothenburg to Tanum, where there's a whole bunch of rock carvings from the late Bronze Age, around 1500-500BC. These are incredibly detailed and made for great viewing. They're a mix of both specific images like battles and tradesmen working, and vague or metaphoric imagery like gods and rituals. Quite interesting. Although the carvings are quite shallow, they've been filled in with red paint so they really stand out, but it's heavily debated whether it's a good idea or not - nobody knows whether the original carvings were painted.

Back down to Gothenburg for our last night in a bed before heading off into the wilderness!
