    Fairbanks - Day 2

    1 saat önce, Amerika Birleşik Devletleri ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

We originally planned to roll out because my mom didn't love the Fairbanks activities. Then, I looked at camping and interest sites between Fairbanks and Denali. Almost nothing. So, we are back to my original plan of Fairbanks exploration. We'll be here tomorrow, too.

A busy day of shopping, museums, and a botanical garden.

  • Ice Art Park Overnight

    15 Haziran, Amerika Birleşik Devletleri ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

This place is a drive-thru 'winter wonderland' sort of thing that is a campground in the summer. We are the only people here. There is a permanent RV labeled "Camp Host" that isn't being used. It's kind of creepy. I don't think the vibe translates to video, but I have a 360 for giggles.

Then there was the parking fiasco. Our first site, #200, wouldn't work because the plug outlet was installed upside down. My plug has a 'direction' so it wouldn't fit. Then, our second site, #205, had an outlet that looked like the end for the camper, not the plug. Three times a charm... site #207 had an outlet that was the right shape, a workable orientation (sideways so still incorrect), and my cord is just barely long enough to reach. Whew! It was a lot of backup practice.

We're definitely locking the door tonight.

  • #32 RA: Touching the Pipe

    15 Haziran, Amerika Birleşik Devletleri ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

The Alyeska Pipeline runs 800 miles from Prudhoe Bay to Valdez. It is sometimes above ground, sometimes below, and if you go to a point where it is transitioning, you can sometimes touch it.

  • #29 RA: The End - But Not Really

    15 Haziran, Amerika Birleşik Devletleri ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

Mosquitos! I was warned. They are plentiful and huge and will wake you up at 4am when they get hungry. So, of course, I stopped to take pics of the metal sculptures celebrating? their existence.

Also, the official end of the Alcan. We took the Klondike Loop side quest to Dawson City and Chicken. We won't have driven the entire length until our return trip to the lower 48.

  • Tok (Toke)

    14 Haziran, Amerika Birleşik Devletleri ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

    I've been saying Tok like tic-toc, but it's with a long O.

We left Chicken, swung through Tok where we did laundry, bought a rotisserie chicken, saw the sign pictured above, and washed the suburban and camper. I forgot to take a picture afterward, but the car is white again!

We'll travel the rest of the way to Fairbanks tomorrow unless the camper tips over tonight. We have some wicked wind gusts happening.

  • Chicken - Day 5

    13 Haziran, Amerika Birleşik Devletleri ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

This was "the day"... the record setting peep drop. They drop a load of peeps from a helicopter each year. This year's is the largest ever - over 12,000 peeps!

You can buy peeps, and if your peep ends up in the five gallon bucket, you win a portion of the pot from the peep purchases. I did not win. Neither did my mother.

Three full days of music, chickens, and sun. It's been fantastic, but I am ready to roll out tomorrow AM for the next leg to Fairbanks. Happy chucking!

  • Chicken - Day 3

    11 Haziran, Amerika Birleşik Devletleri ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

Finally, Chickenstock starts today! A whole host of bands, many from AK, are lined up.

My morning walk around yielded a few imported chickens as well as one I missed before.

One of the chickens, Hennifer, was made by an attendee, who is an artist. It has its own FB page, which shares Hennifer's creation. I hope I can get a better picture of her later. https://www.facebook.com/share/1EXGaGxi3P/Okumaya devam et

  • Chicken - Day 2

    10 Haziran, Amerika Birleşik Devletleri ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

Oh look! A dredge! What a surprise (*snicker*). Chicken was a gold mining town, just like Dawson City. They have the panning for gold thing, but not free and not in a river. And they have a big old dredge.

Addition chickens found today on my walk. And they re-inflated the drooping golden egg, so I took a new pic.

  • Chicken, AK

    9 Haziran, Amerika Birleşik Devletleri ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

We.Are.Here! We are, in fact, early. I wanted to make sure we got camping on the festival site and it's first come, first serve. So, we'll be cooling our heels today. I don't mind. I plan to walk around the very small town. I think they have 1 cafe. I also want to find ice. Keeps your fingers crossed for me. Dawson City grocery didn't have any, and we passed _no_ services of any kind to get here.Okumaya devam et

  • Dawson City - Day 2

    8 Haziran, Kanada ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

Started early with a hike up the local mountain. My friends Angie and Darci would have loved it. I loved, um, most of it. I should have paid more attention to the elevation info... also, they are anti-switchbacks. See the photos for more information. Also, it appears that homesteaders will sometimes just up and leave. The mower pictured was by an abandoned cabin on the hike. Do you think you can fix it, M?

In the afternoon, I visited a local spa for a "floatation therapy" session. It was a nice break from road travel and 'touristing'.

I also visited a local graveyard and the fire station museum. I basically got a one-on-one tour of the museum. I was so busy talking to the volunteer that I forgot to take pictures.

In my free time, I picked up a quart of oil (suburban is a little low), and got our propane refilled.

Other than some grocery shopping in the AM tomorrow, I think we are ready to hit the road and head to Chicken, AK for Chickenstock 2026!

  • The Tintina Trench Rest Area Overnight

    6 Haziran, Kanada ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

A rough driving day. Mud lanes off the road, about 100 km of washboard road surface or construction, with dips and potholes between. I just couldn't make it to Dawson City, so here we are.

  • #26 RA: Five Fingers Rapids

    6 Haziran, Kanada ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

This navigational hazard on the Yukon created a problem for paddlewheel boats (as well as other boats), and they blasted the bottom of the river for about 25 years to make it deeper and wider. It is still a notable portion of the Yukon 1000 river race. Also, accessing the platform required 219 steps, 163 of those steps are in one staircase, making it the Yukon's longest staircase. Now I'm sweaty in 15.6 degree C weather.Okumaya devam et
