  • 🌜Primitive Camping @ Mt Snowbird🌄

    March 25, 2025 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 11 °C

15.2 miles of travel on the AT with a with a worthy side journey to Mt Cammerer Lookout for 360 views. That was certainly a highlight. Others included leaving the Smokys, beautiful weather, some trail magic from Thirsty, a mysterious x-files-like satellite antenna, choice mountaintop camping, and a beautiful sunset. The ascent to reach Snowbird’s peak was an uphill climb of 3000ft over ~6 miles 😫 I was so glad to see this amazing site up here, it wasn’t on my map! The grass is soft and dry- a lovely change from the mossy/muddy experience in the Smoky Mountains.

  • Backwoods Pedicure

    March 26, 2025 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 10 °C

In the middle of the day I took a little break at stream crossing to pay some attention to my well-deserving feet. A little soak in the cold water- some exfoliation with sandy soil. And a mini-massage. Finishing off with a fresh pair of socks. This might be something I do again in the future!Read more

  • 🌜Bluff Mountain- primitive camping

    March 26, 2025 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 7 °C

It was cloudy this morning but I still did my best to watch the sunrise while I broke down camp at Mt Snowbird’s peak. It was a long day of hiking in a variety of terrain- beautiful weather and some excellent views! Highlights today included Max Patch- a large grassy knoll with 360°views, an impromptu backwoods pedicure, and now camping for the night on the peak of Bluff Mountain. At 4680ft elevation you would think there would be an amazing view but here the trees are the view. Happy to have some protection from the wind, to be honest.

18(!) miles of hiking today, landing at AT mile 264.5

  • Daybreak

    March 27, 2025 in the United States ⋅ 🌙 1 °C

Woke up well rested and ready to roll downhill to Hot Springs NC, hoping to make it there in time for lunch at their famous diner!

  • Entering Hot Springs NC

    March 27, 2025 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

What’s up with the people on this commemorative plaque? They look so miserable? Hot Spring NC is a cute little town, recently hit hard by flooding during Hurricane Helene. The Appalachian Trail marches right down the sidewalk through the main street. I’m planning to stay in a historic inn there this evening.👏Read more

  • 🌜Elmer’s Sunnybank Inn

    March 27, 2025 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

Short day, by design. About 11 miles descending into Hot Springs NC. My plan was to get up early and make it to the town’s diner by lunch. Nailed it!

Next: find accommodations- Nailed it! “Elmer’s” is the oldest building in town (1840) and the owner was an AT through-hiker in his youth. Very friendly bohemian vibe here. Feel lucky to experience this place.

Finally some provisions… and I was covered there too. Great outfitter store and some local grocery stores to weigh me down for the next couple miles😅

Only bummer is that I was planning to actually experience the hot springs here…. But the town had a lot of hurricane damage last year so many businesses are not fully operational yet. The hot springs spa/resort is only open weekends now and is still rebuilding- so reservations are very much needed weeks in advance 😩 I’ll have to plan for next time!

  • Mysterious dammed pond

    March 28, 2025 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 22 °C

Not sure why it is here… a large pond was created by damming up an area between two ridgelines. it is stocked with large fish apparently. The water seems stagnant but it’s definitely fed by a spring. They say there is a treasure at the bottom guarded by a large turtle??🐢 next time bring scuba gear!Read more

  • 🌜Primitive Camping near AT 288.6

    March 28, 2025 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

I enjoyed a slow start to the day,.. gently waking up to songbirds, repacking my bag and leaving the hostel/inn. I met a lot of super nice folks there who I saw on trail throughout the day. Before setting a foot in the woods I got a big plate of hash brown potatoes at the diner with other hikers, and start to walk out of Hot Springs. The initial mile or so was a bit of a reality check along the sandy shoreline of the river there that flooded so badly during Hurricane Helene. There were demolition crews at work and few sad stories to interpret via abandoned homes, vehicles, etc.

The trail changed quickly once leaving the riverbank: steep, rocky, arid. There were some interesting views of Hot Springs from the hill approaching “Lover’s Leap”.

About 4 miles in I discovered a “dammed pond” of uncertain purpose. The water was pretty gross.

5 miles in there was trail magic with some cold drinks and people to chat with.

I finished the day with 13.4 miles of hiking at a mediocre site , it’s a little slanted and rocky but is was getting tired and daylight was waning… so this will be good enough! Hammock feels awesome and my pack will be 6oz lighter once I finish dinner 😋

  • Southern Cookie Lady

    March 29, 2025 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

Early in the day I arrived at a famous landmark: The Southern Cookie Lady. Very kind and hospitable. Her home is an amazing oasis just a few steps from the AT. No cookies for me but I had a nice chat with her and refilled my water. Amazing person- she’s been doing this for years apparently.Read more

  • 🌜Flint Mountain Shelter

    March 29, 2025 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

Beautiful day of hiking, covering a lot of ground: total of 20.2 miles! Highlights included the “Southern Cookie Lady”, hitting trail mile 300, a mysterious and stagnant sink hole with struggling minnows, spring making an appearance (flowers!) a huge split boulder, hurricane valley, and pushing ahead to make it to a shelter with storms a brewing 😩 and the last chance to be dry before several rainy days ahead. ☔️🌧️⛈️🌦️🌧️⛈️☔️
