After registering with park rangers I started my hike on the approach trail- through the iconic stone archway! 8.5 miles uphill to reach Springer Mountain where the AT actually begins.

It was sleeting when I got To the top of the mountain! This is mile zero ( southern terminus) of the Appalachian Trail - I hiked almost 9 miles to get here 😜

🌜Stover Creek Shelter

Stayed overnight in the Stover Creek Shelter at mile 2,9 of AT which would make my total mileage for day 1 1.4

The weather was increasing cold throughout the w and there were a couple bouts of snow and sleet mixed in with a light rain. So far my gear is performing well-I feel dry and warm. I didn’t get great sleep here unfortunately due to a duet of a snoring couple from Ohio. But it was still good to be inside the shelter instead of a tent 👍. ReizigerI do have some, but that night I put all of my scented toiletries (and accidentally my earplugs) in the bear-proof locker. In hindsight I should have just gone and grabbed them

Little dusting of snow on the trail- decided to listen to a dub techno set to create a mood. That was a great choice!

Amazing rustic cemetery

Rustic rock grave markers- hard to tell how old but very well maintained and welcoming to hikers - I was excited to find this curiosity

🌜Gooch mountain shelter

There were some hills today early on that mellowed out towards the end of the day. Covered 12.9 miles on the trail and have arrived at Gooch Mountain shelter. Good group here with a fun dynamic. Hoping to sleep well- my earplugs are ready to ward off the snores! (Spoiler Alert: it wasn’t enough 😭🙈😩. Why do snoring people pretend it’s okay to impose on other people???)Meer informatie

Arrival at Blood Mountain

The final approach was nearly an hour of up-up-UP! Elevation 4452 here at the top. It’s the highest peak on the Appalachian trail in GA.
