  • Ah! Finally some views of the lake

    4 Nisan 2025, Amerika Birleşik Devletleri ⋅ ☁️ 24 °C

It was late in the day and quite a challenging climb out of the gorge. The sun was starting to creep downward and we were still on the fence about camping or getting a bunk at the hostel- ultimately the hostel won.

This was my first glimpse of Lake Watauga from the mountains

  • 🌜Boots Off Hostel

    4 Nisan 2025, Amerika Birleşik Devletleri ⋅ ☁️ 22 °C

Another day hiking with Trickshot and Little Foot. We really pushed it to make this happen but we were able to crank out about 24 miles of difficult (yet beautiful) terrain.

Trail magic generosities by Emoji- a trunk full of everything you can imagine wanting !

The sun was sinking as I descended the last 2.5 miles of downhill. It was a bit of a race against the last rays of daylight and we crushed it. All three of us honestly _ran_ out of the woods with a comfy bunk at Boots Off as our reward. They were so great to us: clean amenities, laundry, breakfast, and fun conversations ! I was somewhat delirious and tired but a hot shower in the outdoor shower nook was amazing and somewhat restorative. We decided to sleep in a little bit for our next morning.

This photo was taken the next morning- I was able to lighten my pack load by being more strategic with supplies and ditching a few unnecessary items. My starting pack weighed about 42Lbs- so dropped about 7Lbs of carry! That is huge!

  • 🌜Iron Mountain Shelter

    5 Nisan 2025, Amerika Birleşik Devletleri ⋅ ☁️ 25 °C

A sunny and honesty hot day of hiking around perimeter of Watauga Lake. The three of us (Trickshot, Little Foot, and me) ate breakfast at the hostel and hit the trails as soon your laundry was ready. We got wind of a hiker challenge (more on that later) and wanted to set ourselves up for that for the next morning… so we cut the day a little early at the shelter on Iron Mountain.

Highlights of the day… lake views and walking over the Watauga Dam. Generous trail magic and hospitality from the Hunter Baptist Church AT Ministry (anything you can imagine- even veggie burgers 🥰)… and yeah, did I mention it was kind of hot and sweaty.

I decided to sleep in my hammock and that worked well for me. Cool temps and no bugs overnight.

16 miles of hot and hilly hiking…

  • The Marathon Challenge: 26.2 miles

    6 Nisan 2025, Amerika Birleşik Devletleri ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

There is an ongoing hiker challenge on the AT to cover the distance of an Olympic Marathon in one day- and this one is perfect… starts at the Iron Mountain Shelter and ends at the Marathon gas station in Damascas VA. Certainly a lot of ground to cover but it helped that the topography was generally trending downhill. I had a rocky start but overall a successful hike today! 🙌

Oh! The gas station has some taxidermy 😱

  • 🌜Lady Di’s Hiker Hostel

    6 Nisan 2025, Amerika Birleşik Devletleri ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

Wow! What a day! Our gang of 3 (me, Trickshot, Little Foot) decided to do the Damascus “Marathon” so we left early in the AM from the Iron Mountain Shelter and planed to hike 26.2 miles, generally trending downhill to The Marathon gas station in Damascus VA. This is our longest distance covered in a single day together so far.

Let me start with something good- I slept very comfortably in my hammock overnight- cool and no bugs! I broke down the hammock at the perfect time - just missing a pesky morning deluge.

So yes, we are in the shelter, waiting for a break in the rain, which ultimately arrives- and when it’s time to go my headlamp battery 🪫 cuts me off 😤 ah! Dawn is still about an hour’s wait, so I start charging enough to get going and keep my charger attached (which is more awkward than you would think).

Within the first 5 minutes I slipped on a wet root and fell forward (downhill) landing on my hip and my face kissed a pile of rocks 😘😘. Yikes! I sat for a minute and did a sensory inventory- I’m good! But that was scary. Need to slow down. My fellow hikers were far ahead with no notion of my struggle. Anyway I’m fine, just slow.

In my haste to pack in the rain all of my stuff was disorganized so I fixed that- needed electrolytes for the marathon which were in my food bag at the very bottom 😩

I also had two unplanned bathroom stops (last night’s dinner was not agreeing with me, let’s just say that).

All of this amounts to not seeing Trickshot and Little Foot until the finish line in Downtown Damascus . It was a joyful reunion! We compared notes of our great day hiking and ate all the snacks we could muster… and Trickshot was very interested in scratch-off lottery. He is currently up $6🙄

Some other highlights of today: hiking through some beautiful mountain fog, strategically placed cold drinks as trail magic, getting some new shoes at the Damascus outfitters (my boots are DONE with splitting in the side panels 🪦). We met with some fellow hikers for dinner at their Airbnb which was fun and chaotic but mostly fun. A few people there I had not seen in a couple weeks.

We were still hungry though so we went to a gas station for snacks and then got a ride to the grocery store. Ride to the store was rather uneventful but the ride back to the hostel: oh boy! We quickly realized that our driver was absolutely DRUNK😂 and his stories of getting kicked out of every bar in town tracked. He was a slow and deliberate driver but we were on edge until the last moment when he tried to share a joint with us 😂😂 in the parking lot! “Tell ‘em you met Grub. Hell no, I’m not the mayor but I know the mayor personally- the sheriff too”. What a character.

Okay! So back to the safety and sanity of our hostel. Lady Di is a through hiker (class of 2019). Amazing hospitality and thoughtfulness. Property has chickens, a bee hive, a sweet dog, and lots of charm. We are promised hot breakfast!

  • Virginia Creepin

    7 Nisan 2025, Amerika Birleşik Devletleri ⋅ ☁️ 9 °C

This part of the AT is merged with a rail-trail called the Virginia Creeper. Unfortunately a lot of the VC infrastructure (bridges, etc) were recently damaged in flood waters which is a shame. I think. Lot of it was old, repurposed train infrastructure 🥲🥹Okumaya devam et

  • 🌜 Thomas Knob Selter

    8 Nisan 2025, Amerika Birleşik Devletleri ⋅ ☁️ 4 °C

We did a lot of climbing today to get situated in the highlands for tomorrow. The areas in elevation were freshly frosted with frozen dew which was magical- so amazing to experience, I couldn’t capture it on camera well but within my field of vision for most of the morning I could see all 4 seasons at the same time: (bright blue sunny sky with puffy clouds, spring flowers poking up around rocky streams, oaks clutching their few remaining leaves, and frosted tree limbs.

Our shelter was PACKED and the temps were in the 20’s overnight, so it felt good to be sheltered...good group here- familiar faces etc.

Group did a little camp fire for sunset with s’mores! Plans to get up early for a big day on trail through the nearby pony pastures!

  • 🌮 Taco Tuesday!

    8 Nisan 2025, Amerika Birleşik Devletleri ⋅ ☁️ 7 °C

Today’s trail recipe is something oddly exotic and satisfying. Fajitas with almond butter and crunchy roasted chickpeas covered in ample (bottom of the bag) falafel spices. Satisfying crunch, good protein content, flavorful…. Score: 3/5 Tasty but not necessarily something I would do at home. 🌮🌮🌮Okumaya devam et
