• Jo'Burg to Wakkerstroom

    Jul 28–30 in South Africa ⋅ ☀️ -1 °C

Today we set off for Wakkerstroom, a birding haven with over 370 species of birds found in the wetlands.

We had time to visit some grasslands along the way where we saw the Orange-throated Longclaw, spoonbills, an Egyptian Goose with goslings, a kestrel and lots more.

We stopped at Balfour for petrol and toilet. There were many people along the roadside waiting for taxis.

There was lots of corn fields being cut down and burnt along the way.

There were people walking everywhere through barren paddocks from the slum areas.

There were eucalyptus plantations where we kept an eye out for the Long-crested Eagle but didn't see any.

People were being shepherds to a flock of sheep.

There was rubbish everywhere and people walking along the roadsides looking for anything they could make money from.

We arrived in the quaint little town in time for a late lunch which we had at the bakery. Then went to our guest house, unpacked and relaxed until 4pm when we went birding very close to town (see next entry).
