    Beer can regatta day!
After another night at the casino watching the footy on the big screen, it's probably fair to say there were two big losers for night.
Essendon and Julie🙃 ( technically not a loser, just donated some of her winnings back..)
Essendon got flogged by Geelong, and Julie found out that it's rare to win two nights in a row!
The beer can regatta was a bit of fun, and although it was a bit overcast, it was still around 34c
Caught up with Mick Douglas who is up here visiting his son.

  • July 17th Zebra Stone & Litchfield NP

    17. juli 2023, Australien ⋅ ⛅ 31 °C

Left Darwin this morning for the magnificent Litchfield National Park.
Our home for the next two nights is Zebra Stone, a bush camp about 20km out of Batchelor.
Zebra stone has the only "Zebra stone" in the world. More to come on that later.
Made camp by lunchtime, so we spent the afternoon at Florence Falls and Buleys Rockhole after checking out the massive anthills.
Both Magnetic (north/south facing) and cathedral types.
Both the water holes were well worth the effort, and we all had a dip at both. In fact, Florence falls gets the nod as the best I've seen in the NT.
There is a stargazing happening tonight here, so hopefully, clear skies!

  • July 18th Litchfield National Park

    18. juli 2023, Australien ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

Day 2 at Litchfield started slowly after a night of star gazing. The pictures don't do it justice.
We managed to defy the name, and after a 4wd down a dusty track, we actually found the Lost City!
I'm not sure if that will make the news down in Melbourne, but it was an impressive find.
    See pics
After that, we had a quick stop at Wangi Falls, where a tourist was taken by a croc last week, but decided not to venture in the water ( which was back open!)
Off to the Darwin River tavern for lunch followed up by a dip at Berry Hot Springs, which was very nice.
Back at Zebra Stone camp, we had a look at the 1.2 billion year old Zebra stone, the unique stone that is only found in Australia.
Off for a drive south tomorrow, probably stopping around Dunmarra approx. 500km

Left Zebra Stone camp and Litchfield National Park for a big day of driving today.
Travelled through Katherine and Mataranka, and after about 600km we have stopped over at a free camp at Newcastle Waters.
Just a roadside stop, but we managed to get the last two spots.
About 400 km tomorrow through Elliott & Tennent Creek. We will stay over at the Devil's Marbles campground before moving to Alice Springs on Friday ( another 400 km).

Up early and off from Newcastle Waters rest area.
Drove through Elliott, then Tennent Creek for fuel.
Arrived at Karla Karla National Park ( Devil's Marbles) a bit after lunch.
A small but busy camp with the Devil's Marbles looking spectacular, particularly in the evening light.
Lamb chops & jacket potatoes on the open fire tonight, with a bit of salad.
    Off to Alice Springs tomorrow's...

Apart from the first afternoon at the Brewery next door to our Caravan Park, Alice Springs has not been too kind to me

  • July 24th Uluru/Ayers Rock

    24. juli 2023, Australien ⋅ 🌬 18 °C

Arrived at Uluru today after a 460km trek from Alice Springs . I'm glad I was by myself, as the car needed a good air out after the troubles of the last few days...💨💨👃
It's a bit commercial here now with the only spot to stay being the Ayers Rock resort and campground. You can no longer camp next to the rock. We selected a couple of beautiful sites in the dustbowl paddock with no power or water, but at least the dunnies are within 2km. We were all allowed to pay only $45 each for that privilege!
Straight out to see the Sunset at the Rock, which we managed to livestream with Mum.
A bit more exploring around here and the Olga's tomorrow, and then we will head off for a free camp somewhere on the road heading home...
Ps: days down to 19c, nights down to 2c, windchill is high🥶🧊

  • July 26th - Matheson Bore camp

    26. juli 2023, Australien ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

Had some little visitors after sign off last night.
A family of four Kangaroo rats decided to come out and play!
Cheeky, with no real fear of us, they kept us entertained for hours.
Left Peterman rest area this morning and travelled back to the Stuart Hwy, where we turned south for home
After about 450km , we pulled up at another free camp, about 112km north of Coober Pedy.
    Matheson Bore camp.
Off to Coober Pedy, where we will meet Bronwyn and Geoff for the next couple of days.

A late start morning with Julie still a bit crook, so the 4 of us left her to rest while we took off for the Breakaways. These are a group of hills that have been left after some serious erosion and look a bit like Mars (so I'm told...) Anyway, you be the judge.
After that, we had coffee and a look through the Opal mining museum up here, which was excellent. Really told the story of the rich history of the place.
Back for a bit of a rest while Trev helped Geoff fix his van.
Another bbq dinner, and we will be off tomorrow heading further south while saying goodbye to Bronwyn & Geoff.

    Travelling day today.
Left Cooper Pedy today with Julie on the road to recovery.
Drove down through Glendambo, where we stopped for fuel for the cars and ourselves .
Went through Pimba and the turn off to Woomera.
Stopped off to view Lake Hart, which appeared out of nowhere looking majestic.
Quite a few salt lakes around here 🙂
We have arrived at Monalena Lagoon Rest Area where we are free camping the night.
About 100km short of Port Augusta.
So far, it looks good, but we are probably 200m from train tracks. Hopefully, not too many come thru tonight!
    Fire going, chops for tea!

Left camp this morning for another travelling day.
Through Port Augusta, past Port Perie with a stop a nice little town called Spalding.
Travelled down to Waikerie, where we got the ferry across the mighty Murray River.
Free camp at the Waikerie Temp RV camp.
It's a bit cooler down here but very green and pretty with some good walks out the back of camp by the cliffs of the Murray.
