This is a queer chorus festival that happens once every 4 years This year is in Halifax. The festival starts Friday the 19 & ends on the 23rd. I will be staying a few extra days to visit a friend, then fly out drive home. That's to be determined. Les mer

  • Who We Are

    17. mai 2023, Canada ⋅ ☀️ 8 °C

I thought it would be good to explain a bit of who/what the Rainbow Chorus is. I'll copy the "blub" from the Unison program we received. Please not that I do not know who wrote this.

"Rainbow Chorus of Waterloo-Wellington, under the artistic direction of Alison McNeill, is a community chorus that welcomes members of all genders, sexualities and gender expressions- and allied of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community. We invite members from all levels of experience who enjoy singing a diverse repertoire of choral music, no addition required. We strive to create a supportive community for out members to join together in song and have fun. We promote inclusion awareness of the LGBTQ+ communities of Waterloo-Wellington throughout concerts and community involvement. Rainbow Chorus is a charitable, not-for-profit organization that depends on financial support from it's members, sponsors and communities."

I have been part of this choir for 10 years now, and it's a place where I truly feel understood, accepted and loved. This is where I really came to accept who I am as a whole, that it doesn't matter who I love, how I love, or who I am. I can just be. This is a place of freedom for me. So much so, that I sometimes take a train or bus to Guelph, (where we practice) from Kitchener, where I live.

This choir has changed so many lives for the good, and I am so pleased and honored to be part of such an amazing choir. Not just because of how accepting we are, but that we are actually a very close knit choir, our friends are here, and we also have a lot of vocal talent in the group. I love that anyone can join - it doesn't matter if they can't sing well. We still love them and accept them!

I have been to 2 other Unison Festivals. The first was in Ottawa and the second was in Calgary Alberta. Both of them were so much fun! And I know that this upcoming one will be just as much fun or even better, as my mental health has stabilized and I know how to have good boundaries within myself so i don't overdo things.

I am not bringing my service dog on this trip for several reasons, but the biggest reason is that he's partly retired, and he barely works these days, and having to force him to work almost 24/7 for a week, is not fair to him. I would also have a hard time because I'd have to look after him as well, and not focus as much on enjoying being around friends etc.

I will be ok without him, as I said, my mental health has never been better, and I will live in the moment and give myself breaks when I need to. I've been telling myself that it's ok to not participate in every activity. That I will not be missing out, as if i force myself to go to these extra activities when I'm exhausted or emotional, that I would not enjoy it, and then I actually would be missing out! And I could potentially be miserable for the rest of the trip if I don't take the breaks that I need.

So come with me as I share with you my journey to, in and from Halifax Nova Scotia.

  • The drama of WestJet

    18. mai 2023, Canada ⋅ ☀️ 2 °C

    So here's the story:
I originally booked a specific flight to fly with friends from the rainbow chorus. It would be so much fun to fly and experience a flight with my chorus friends, however, that didn't happen as they changed my flight from earlier that morning, to later that evening. And what makes it worse, is that they didn't even give me notice! A friend who booked through Expedia was told it was changed. So we all had to change our flight plans.

I called WestJet to see if I could change my flight to the day before. (18th of May) and I was able to do so, and she changed my seat so I had extra leg room. Yay! (This was booked 3 months before the festival dates, and I changed it alot a month or so before the festival)

So all is good, until 2 weeks before my flight is due to leave, when we start hearing about WestJet potentially striking! So I'm panicking and after looking through things decide that if they strike I'll just hop on another flight.

So, we hear they're going on strike 3 days before I leave. Not fun. But then they delay the strike, and won't actually strike until the day after my flight so all is well... UNTIL...

I get an email stating to check on and get my boarding pass. I'm good to go! Yay! What a relief! Until the following morning I get an email from WestJet stating my flight was cancelled indefinitely.

At this point I'm freaking the f*** out because I couldn't find any other flight to go on, except ones that were close to $3000. (And this is to go to Halifax!)

So I send a message to my chorus friends on Facebook explaining what's going on. So many people were sending me condolences and sending me positive energy and love. And one person suggested that I contact Dave as he was driving and there was a seat available in his car! YAY!

So, Liezl drives me to Guelph from the farm, to Guelph so I can hitch a 18+ hour drive to Halifax!

So that's the beginning of the drama of getting to Halifax! There's more adventures to share as you read!

Back to the fight mishap, as the email stated, I am owed compensation for all of this happening.

Waiting for the time to drive to Guelph to meet with some friends to drive to Halifax. It's an 18 hour drive, and we'll be sharing the driving!

More info about the driving when I arrive to Guelph!

    The waiting game!

    18. mai 2023, Canada ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

So I'm here at Dave's house, and just waiting for everyone to arrive. It's a bit stressful because someone else in the choir had their flight cancelled also, and there are no other flights going to Halifax at this time.

So while Dave is picking Denny up, I'm sitting here in his garden with a smile on my face. Life is good. Even though my flight was cancelled, and all hell broke loose this morning, life is good.

    I'm going on an adventure!

We are finally leaving!!! We have christened the car! Her name is the rainbow road and we are the rainbow roadies!!

    5:20 we left.

As it turns out so many fights were cancelled last minute for so many different reasons. It's been stressful for everyone, however, I feel very fortunate that I have a ride to Halifax as so many people have been messed over.

This will be such a fun trip! I'm so glad that I was able to get a ride last minute.

  • Flat Tire

    19. mai 2023, Canada ⋅ ⛅ 7 °C

We got a flat tire! That's what woke me up! Hoping to go back to sleep. We had to stop in Quebec, a small town called st. Louis du Ha Ha. The mechanic seemed very grumpy at first, but he was very efficient, fast and only charged us $15!!??

While waiting I also saw a fox! It was pretty cool!
