A beautiful Gothic cathedral is in this area, and La Bouqueria Market was fun to explore. Everything was arranged so beautifully!

Mother of God Church of Bethlehem

This church has unfortunately been damaged by fires more than once, but because of that, some of the interior decorations are Gothic and others are more modern. It's an interesting place to visit in the old part of the city.

Mother of God Church: More of Interior

We were glad we went inside this church--many beautiful things to see, and very different from previous churches.

    Barcelona Leisure Time

The Palau de Musica (Concert Hall) is very ornate. We heard the inside was fantastic, but didn't have time for the tour. The third photo is what we would have seen!

Barcelona also has lots of parks, squares, and pedestrian streets to relax in. We were happy to be able to enjoy a reunion dinner with Maika, one of the Spaniards we'd met in the English Immersion program in May.

    Cartagena's Roman Theater

The most important thing to visit in Cartagena is the Roman Theater, built between 5 and 1 BC. It could seat 6000+ spectators. Over the years, it had been gradually covered over by a market, homes, and even a church, so eventually it was forgotten. The remains were discovered in 1988, and it was restored in 2003.

    Azores and the Crater Lakes

The ship stopped in the Azores, islands that are part of Portugal even though they over 900 miles from Lisbon. They are volcanic islands, with craters containing lakes. We took a bus to see the "Lagoon of the Seven Cities". It is a crater with two lakes in it, one blue and one green. With the clouds and rain, we couldn't see the difference in the lakes' colors, but it was beautiful! We could also see the coast from up on the mountain.

The capitol city of the Azores, Ponta Delgada, is charming. One can see the Portugese style of mosaic sidewalks, clock towers, churches and fountains. People are mostly catholic and their faith is strong.

    Transatlantic Crossing: 13 Relaxing Days

North Atlantic Ocean ⋅ ☀️ 72 °F

Altogether, we had eight days at sea. We set our clocks back about every other night after leaving the European coast. An extra hour of sleep would have been nice, but it was hard not to get up when we woke up around 6 a.m. Sea days consisted of a nice breakfast buffet, exercise (the walking track or promenade deck and/or the gym), Latin or line-dancing, reading, lunch buffet, naps if we wanted, and Dean went to a lecture series on forensics. After dinner was a view of the sunset over the waves, a wonderful show every night, followed by watching dancers or karaoke singers. Then we were rocked to sleep by the waves. Unfortunately, I caught a cold, but used some Chinese herbs bought at the spa/health center, and it was mostly gone in three days.

The ship was full, and we met some interesting people. Many Europeans take this cruise to spend time in Florida, some for the whole winter! Some Floridians were on a Mediterranean cruise right before the Transatlantic cruise, so they were cruising for almost a month. Thirteen days was enough for us. We enjoyed it so much, but were looking forward to returning to Arizona.

    Colorful Nassau, The Bahamas

There are 700 islands in The Bahamas. Only 30 are inhabited, and the capitol, Nassau, is on New Providence, a small one. There are also 2,400 cays (coral reefs) in the archipelago. Many of the islands and cays are for sale; looks like the least expensive is a 6-acre cay for $795,000. We are definitely not shopping for one!

The water around The Bahamas is such a pretty blue! Buildings are painted in different pastels, but especially pink. This is to look nice with the green tropical trees and to help people feel cool.

    Historical Nassau

At the History Museum is the story of Christopher Columbus’ discovery of the New World by landing in The Bahamas and claiming it for Spain. Not much happened for hundreds of years afterwards. Eventually it became a British colony, and after the Revolutionary War, it was settled by Loyalists who didn’t want to be separate from England.

The Queen’s Staircase, built in honor or Queen Victoria, leads up the hill to Fort Fincastle, a fort in the shape of a ship. Forts were needed due to the strategic location of the Bahamas, and to protect against pirates.

The Balcony House is the oldest house in Nassau, dating from approximately 1788. It was the home of wealthy Loyalists, changed hands many times. The last owner was Josephine Bryce, an American heiress, who used it until the 1970s. These old houses were built with open joist ceilings, to keep the wood from rotting in the humidity.
