    15 juillet 2021, Australie ⋅ ☁️ 31 °C

Berry Springs Nature Park is a picturesque area 47 kilometres south of Darwin that is a popular day trip destination for picnics, incorporating shady areas, manicured lawns, picnic tables and free gas barbecues.

Work up an appetite for lunch with a swim or a bushwalk.

In the dry season you can cool off in one of Berry Creek's clear and shady pools, and if you've brought your goggles along, you should be able to spot native fish and other aquatic life. Seasonal pool closures are in place over the wet season. Alternatively, explore the area on foot - the looped walking track takes you through monsoon forest and woodlands. It starts from the picnic area - don't forget your binoculars if you are keen on birdwatching.

During World War II, Berry Springs was part of a rest and recreation camp set up by the armed forces for the 100,000 personnel based in the area. A number of huts and weirs were built at Berry Springs during this time, and you can still see the remains around the main pool.

  • Discovery Park Onslow, WA

    8–18 août 2021, Australie ⋅ 🌬 25 °C

Onslow is located 1380 km north of Perth via Highway 1. It is located 82 km north west of the North Western Coastal Highway.

Onslow is a sleepy little town where people go to fish and to have quiet holidays by the sea. Historically it was created as a mixture of pearling, farming and gold mining, but today, in part because it lies on the coast 82 km from the main North West Coastal Road, it is a true Cinderella - a gorgeous coastal retreat where only those who know of its charms tend to divert from the long journey from Perth to Broome. It has become known as 'Cyclone City' as, since its establishment in 1883, it has experienced major cyclones in 1909, 1918, 1926, 1934, 1953, 1958, 1961, 1962, 1963, 1975, 1995 and 1999. The 1963 cyclone had winds which were measured at 232 km/h. In fact the cyclones have occurred with such regularity that they have had profound effects on the town - it was forced to relocate after the 1926 cyclone and the frequency of cyclones in the 1960s forced the reconstruction of the local jetty to be abandoned.

Few Australians now realise that the Japanese actually bombed Onslow. They caused no loss of life but the town's very impressive War Memorial, at the end of Second Avenue, is a reminder that in 1943 the town was under attack.

It is hard to tell exactly what it is - could it be the wreck of a ship? - but just off the coast to the north of the Anzac Memorial is a jagged collection of remnants which is all that is left of a jetty that was built in 1925 and used to be 1.2 km in length. It was badly damaged by cyclones - cyclone damage in 1934, 300 metres removed by a cyclone in 1961, and finally destroyed by the Army in 1982.

As you enter Onslow it is impossible not to be amazed by the salt lakes and the huge mountains of salt which can be seen from Onslow Road. Onslow is surrounded by 90 square kilometres of salt flats and the Onslow Salt Pty Ltd can produce up to 2.5 million tonnes of sodium chloride in a year. There is a 1.3 km jetty off Sunset Beach and in 2002, its first year of operations, the company shipped 45,000 tonnes of salt to Asia.

Between March and October, on an average of three times a month, the remarkably beautiful natural phenomenon named "Staircase to the Moon" occurs. The phenomenon is created when a full moon shines on the exposed mudflats at very low tide. The result is an illusion which looks like stairs reaching to the moon. It can be observed at Onslow, Dampier, Point Samson, Hearson Cove, Cossack, Port Hedland and Broome.

Kalbarri is a popular holiday and retirement town surrounded by one of the most beautiful regions of wildflowers in Australia. Although the coastline around Kalbarri was explored by Europeans in the early seventeenth century the actual town of Kalbarri did not come into existence until 1951 and since then it has grown to become a popular tourist destination with fishing, swimming, bushwalking, organised cruises and a range of activities designed for holidaymakers including the impressive Rainbow Jungle, Australian Parrot Breeding Centre and walks in the beautiful and dramatic Kalbarri National Park.

Kalbarri National Park, which lies to the north, south and east of the town, is simply one of the best National Parks in Australia. Covering 186,000 hectares it is a feast of natural wonders. Between August and October it is covered in spectacular displays of wildflowers; the park is cut by the elaborate and spectacular twists and turns of the Murchison River which has an 80 km-long gorge; in recent times the Kalbarri Skywalk has allowed visitors to step out beyond the 100 metre-high cliffs; and there are remarkable geological formations including Nature's Window, The Loop, Z-Bend and Hawks Head.

There are a series of roads and walking trails leading to some outstanding locations along the coastal cliffs. This is some of the most beautiful and spectacular coastline in Australia. The cliffs rise over 100 metres, the shapes of the gorges and the promontories are impressive and dramatic. It would be easy to spend a day exploring all of the paths which lead to the cliff faces. It seems as though every few hundred metres there is another sign inviting the visitor to inspect dramatic cliffs with names like 'Eagle Gorge', 'Shellhouse and Grandstand', 'Island Rock' and 'Rainbow Valley'.

    14 octobre 2021, Australie ⋅ 🌬 22 °C

Cervantes is located 198 km north of Perth via Joondalup and Lancelin.

Cervantes is a small, modern fishing village and holiday destination where the major attractions include The Pinnacles, one of the great geological attractions in the country.

The Pinnacles are one of the natural wonders of Australia. These strange, much photographed, limestone pillars are unique. They have the quality of a moonscape and, without geological understanding, seem completely otherworldly.

The first Europeans to discover them were Major Logue and his stockmen in 1849. They had camped near the Nambung River and during the night their cattle strayed. While searching for the cattle the next morning the stockmen came across the Pinnacle Desert.

Cervantes is recognised as the major access point to the Pinnacles. It is located 20 km north of the Pinnacles Desert Discovery Centre. The journey is through typical coastal scrubland (huge white sand dunes separate the road from the coast - this is an excellent opportunity to inspect the dunes and visit the incredibly white beaches - there are turnoffs to Kangaroo Point and Hangover Bay).

The Pinnacles Desert Discovery Centre explains, through displays, soundscapes, videos and images, the geology of the area and how the pinnacles were formed. There is a Pinnacles View Lookout over the entire site and a Desert View Trail which is an easy 1.5 km and allows visitors to get up close to these strange and magical formations.
