    22 Oktober 2024, Thailand ⋅ ⛅ 28 °C

Post from last night. Went to Khaosan road which is essentially the strip in Bangkok, very cool to see even if you get hassled every two seconds to buy something. Also took a few tuk tuks to get around which was very fun.Baca selengkapnya

  • Royal palace

    25 Oktober 2024, Thailand ⋅ ☁️ 34 °C

Went to the royal palace, we had to cover our knees and wear shoes to get inside. The last photo is the outside of the grand palace room (no photos allowed inside the room itself), the architecture was amazing and you can appreciate how long it would have taken to build. First few photos are inside the ICONSIAM mall which was very boutique so we weren’t buying anything, but great to walk around.Baca selengkapnya

    26 Oktober 2024, Thailand ⋅ ⛅ 28 °C

Arrived at Chiang mai via sleeper bus this morning, I slept the whole way so it was perfect. Very chill day, mainly catching up on sleep and exploring the area before watching some more Muay Thai at the local stadium.Baca selengkapnya

  • Elephants and Sunday market

    27 Oktober 2024, Thailand ⋅ ☀️ 34 °C

Went to pongern elephant sanctuary where we did a bamboo raft down the river then washed and fed bananas to mother and baby elephant. We then trekked to a waterfall and went in for a quick dip, which was perilous with the slippy rocks but fun. Sunday markets were also on this evening which are a huge thing in the area, taking us 20 mins to get out. Also managed to sneak in 100 balls at the local golf range. Scroll to the end to see the whitest crack east of Edinburgh.Baca selengkapnya

  • Chiang mai final day

    28 Oktober 2024, Thailand ⋅ 🌙 27 °C

Quiet day today as we were both hungover from last night but managed to make it to a Muay Thai class in the evening which was exhausting but worthwhile. Also seen two rats the size of cats. Onto Pai tomorrow.Baca selengkapnya

  • Pai first day

    30 Oktober 2024, Thailand ⋅ 🌙 21 °C

Arrived at Pai today after a 4 hour journey by minibus. Hotel is very nice with a cushty shared pool area. Pai is both of our favourite place so far on the trip, it feels very disconnected from the rest of the world and the quintessential hippy paradise. Everything is extremely laid back and no one is trying to get anything off you unlike the city. Hidden away cocktail bars and great street food, this place is amazing. Also managed to meet up with Bradley and Chloe we met in Chiang Mai. Hot springs and the pub crawl to come tomorrow.Baca selengkapnya

  • Hot springs and pub crawl

    31 Oktober 2024, Thailand ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

Went to the Thai hot springs which are naturally occurring and the water is 80 degrees at the source. Downstream it drops to around 35 degrees and when you get in it takes a second to get used to. We both rented mopeds which was an experience (2 wheels is not for me), but a journey with great views none the less. Finished off with a pub crawl meeting some Scottish people (somehow knew a lot of the same people) and watched an Irish guy attempt the drinks record at the bar (30 vodka mixers) which he equalled before passing out and getting stretchered away, I think he’s fine though.Baca selengkapnya

  • Arrival in Phuket

    31 Oktober 2024, Thailand ⋅ ☁️ 27 °C

Went out for Halloween on the last day of Pai which was good fun although we didn’t see much during the day from the hangover. Unfortunately missed tipsy tubing there the next day as we were booked up to leave and had a full day of travelling to the south. Arrived late last night and used today to explore and refresh after drinking for 3 days. Patong in Phuket is very touristy and seems to be a bit tacky to be honest. Exploring further afield will show us some nicer parts I’m sure. Day trip to surrounding areas by boat to come tomorrow.Baca selengkapnya

  • Day trip to Phi Phi islands

    3 November 2024, Thailand ⋅ ☁️ 28 °C

Took the day trip by boat to Phi Phi islands stopping at Krabi along the way. Left early in the morning and first stopped off in Krabi (Koh Mai Phi) for the first sight of white beaches and clear water in the sun. Very hot and the sea was like a bath. Snorkelling session was good fun at Phi Phi Don, the largest island of Phi Phi seeing the coral and wildlife. Quickly stopped off at monkey island, but didn’t get out to see some of the crab eating monkeys as the Thais call them. Stopped off for lunch before heading to Phi Phi Le for more snorkelling and exploring the island. Finished off in Maya bay which is famous for The Beach (2000), and is a perfect white sand beach hidden by the cliff edges which characterise these islands. Great sight. Moving on to Koh Yao Noi tomorrow.Baca selengkapnya

    4 November 2024, Thailand ⋅ ☁️ 29 °C

Arrived in Koh Yao Noi today for a 3 day Muay Thai camp. The training was great and the food was provided after, which was the best massaman I’ve had so far. Training area is located directly next to the beach and the sunset was a good one tonight as we watched on while we trained and in the pool after. Training early tomorrow and exploring the island by moped after.Baca selengkapnya

  • Ao nang

    6 November 2024, Thailand ⋅ ☁️ 29 °C

Final day on Koh Yao Noi we found an amazing beach that we stumbled upon trying to find the second biggest tree in Thailand (we didn’t get there in the end) after taking the wrong road but were happy to stay for a few hours taking the afternoon off training with us both being drained. Arrived in Ao Nang today which is more touristy spot again but still fairly quiet compared to Patong. Only one night here as we plan to go to Koh Samui which takes us into the gulf of Thailand before heading to Koh Tao which we’ve heard good things about.Baca selengkapnya

  • Koh Tao

    9 November 2024, Thailand ⋅ ☁️ 27 °C

Arrived at Koh Tao today from Koh Samui which wasn’t our favourite place not finding much to do. The hostel lady was very nice tho and looked after us, and we also met other British folk there who we went out to party with at night (good fun). One girl in the hostel was French but sister went to Stirling uni so had been to fubar, and the other went to Strathclyde and worked with my flatmate a couple months ago, so strange. Koh Tao rivals Pai for favourite place so far, with a similar vibe and lots to see and do. Exploring more of the island and jungle party at night to come tomorrow.Baca selengkapnya

  • Kho Tao Pt 2 & Kho Phangan

    12 November 2024, Thailand ⋅ 🌙 28 °C

The rest of Kho Tao involved the jungle party and well known pub crawl with lots of being hungover on the beach in between. We also managed to go on a snorkelling tour tho on our final day where we went to Kho Nuang Yuan, which is a preserved paradise island with a unique beach separating the two land masses that make up the island (only got one photo as my phone died). Arrived in Kho Pha-ngan for the full moon party which is the biggest party in Thailand with 10,000 people arriving to drink and party till sunrise on the beach. Cool to see although the sunstroke from snorkelling didn’t help me. Definitely looking forward to seeing the historic side of Cambodia and some time off the beers. Leaving here tomorrow -> 🇰🇭.Baca selengkapnya

    19 November 2024, Kamboja ⋅ ⛅ 30 °C

Arrived from Bangkok last night, Cambodia seems very friendly and cheap. We were driven from the airport by a guy called Pring, he talked us into a sunrise tour of Angkor Wat. We went to the hostels pub quiz and won. Then we woke up at 4:30 for the sunrise tour, the temple was very big. It looked good at sunrise, we then went to 4 more (monkey, mountain, jungle, kings pool) then called it a day around 12pm.

  • Phnom Penh

    21 November 2024, Kamboja ⋅ ⛅ 33 °C

Arrived today in Cambodia’s capital city where we booked a tour to watch traditional Khmer boxing called Kun Khmer for the evening. Our guide who took us there explained how their sport was lost during the genocide, as it was forbidden, even explaining that his uncle was killed by the regime accusing him of teaching it.

While the Thai counterpart Muay Thai gained traction worldwide in the 70s and 80s, the Cambodians are only recently now trying to excel their sport, and bring in more money for their fighters that are currently underpaid and with little to no equipment (unlike Thailand where fighters are well supported). Although he said Cambodia’s best fighter went to Thailand in 2022 to fight one of their best fighters, and won the fight, making him a big celebrity here whilst giving credibility to their sport. The arena is free to enter and is subsidised by the local beer company who sponsor it and we were even shown on Cambodian national TV which was pretty cool. Museums to see tomorrow.

  • S21 & Killing fields

    22 November 2024, Kamboja ⋅ ☁️ 33 °C

This is a slightly different post we took no photos today as it seemed to be the wrong thing however I will describe the events of the day and what we saw.
This gets very graphic in parts so if you do not wish to read do not feel compelled.

Today we went to S21 (The torture camp/ prison for the Khmer Rouge) we took a Audio tour that explained all the atrocities that happened there, people would be brought to this facility to be tortured into confessions and to implicate other people. The mere fact of their arrest was proof of their guilt as the regime supposedly made no mistakes, they also had a saying that it is better for an innocent man to be killed than for an enemy to get away.
The most commons ‘crimes’ of these people were being ‘new’ meaning living in a city and not working to grow your own food as a pose to ‘old’ peasant farmers this meant the main target of the regime was intellectuals, supporters of the former government, doctors, engineers, foreign language speakers, essentially anyone with an education but included anyone suspected of non full party support, this was a lot of people.
The camp was split into the prison wings and the torture wings, the torture rooms consisted of a bed frame with irons for holding the victims, they were whipped, electrocuted, water boarded, hung till unconscious then revived by dunking in human waste amongst other methods, eventually everyone died or confessed and all were sentenced to death.
Of the 20,000 people housed at this facility from 1975-1979 only 12 survivors have been confirmed the rest were tortured to death or were sent to the killing fields.

This was our next stop, and probably even more harrowing than the prison, we again took the audio tour that explained how the people who were sent here were convicted and had no chance of survival. An estimated 20,000 people were killed and buried at this small inconspicuous field. They would be driven in trucks and told they would be getting rehoused to avoid panic, they would then be blindfolded and knelt beside mass graves as loud music played and generators ran to muffle the noises. Due to the high cost of ammunition no one was shot instead they were hacked with machetes, pick axes or farming tools and dumped into the graves with some holding 500 bodies.

The next paragraph is very graphic only read if you feel capable.

The most harrowing sight of the day was the 2nd last stop on the tour, it was a large tree beside a mass grave that was covered in offerings left by mourners and tourists, it had been the place that the soldiers killed the babies by grabbing their feet and hitting their heads off the trunk of the tree. The mass grave beside was exclusively filled with the remains of these babies and naked women, likely their mothers, this small 3mx4m grave contained the remains of around 200 people.

    Also graphic

The final stop of the tour was a shrine/mausoleum that contained the exhumed skulls of some of the dead it had around 10 floors of skulls totalling 9000 they were categorised by age and cause of death the room had a feeling that is indescribably horrific.

Today was a necessary part of our journey and anyone’s who comes to Cambodia in my opinion. We must remember the horrors that happed here for the sake of the victims dead and alive, there is not one Cambodian who was not affected by this tragedy every family was in some way torn with 2-3 million dead in 4 years from a country of only 8 million. Everyone has lost someone and some have lost everyone. It was common practice to wipe out entire families for the imagined transgressions of the father or mother in order to avoid retribution.

Hamish and I will never forget this things we have seen today neither will millions of Cambodians. They are an amazing people who show joy and generosity at every opportunity despite the horrors of their past each person we have met is as kind as the last.
