    25 September 2018, Amerika Syarikat ⋅ 🌙 19 °C

We get up and have breakfast at a nearby cafe. Once done, I head over to pickup our rental car. I decide to take the subway instead of the bus. Wow... these subway cars are really fancy, they have nice comfy seats and lots more room than on the bus. That's probably why it's more expensive to take the Bart.

Getting the rental was really quick. I have a blue Mitsubishi Outlander for this leg of the trip. It also has CarPlay :). I head back to the studio to pick Ben up. The itinerary does not look too complex. I was afraid that I might have to drive in some of the streets where it does not seem clear where cars are allowed to go with all the various public transportation there is in SF. Thankfully I ge an easy route.

After getting the car we head to Golden Gate Bridge. There is a vista where we can stop and take photos. The fog is still present but we are able to get a couple of photos with an almost clear sky. We walk to the halfway point of the bridge to see the view and take more photos. We head back to the car and a cross. After taking photos on one side we have to take photos on the other 🙃.

After all those photos we drive to Sonoma for some Vineyard visiting and wine tasting. We make our first stop at Schug and take the wine tasting. They specialize in Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. They were very good 🍷.
We then go visit a couple more, some have locely gardens and others great terrasse setups for wine tasting. I forgo the wine tasting at these other vineyards as the first one has already started making me feel the alcohol.

There is a big difference in temperature between here and SF and it's only 30 minutes away. They say the hot air from this area sucks in the cold from the ocean to SF. The real warm summer days in SF are end of September and October.

After visiting enough vineyards for the day we head to downtown Sonoma. There is a fair today and people are allowed to drink in the park in front of City Hall. We get there and the fair is getting setup. There will be live music. I however start feeling nauseated and am no longer interested in being in a large group of people. Maybe it's the heat... We decide to head back to our new AirBnB in Mills Valley. I need to rest as we have a full day of mountain biking tomorrow. I will bring lots of water and snacks to eat.

    That's all for today

  • Marin mountain biking

    26 September 2018, Amerika Syarikat ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

I slept well and I am ready to go do some mountain biking 🚵‍♀️. We now need to go meet Marc who will have 2 Santa Cruz Hightower bikes ready for us. Marc sets us up and has a map ready for us to go do the Tamarancho loop. This loop is a 12.5 km loop with 44 switchbacks. Those switchbacks... Some of them are really technical or very tight. I was not able to do a good third of them. No worries, it's good practice. The trail is fun and not overly difficult. Some scary places where the track becomes very narrow with a big drop. The trick is not to look down as tempting as it may be. I was worried for Ben but he did it like a pro. At one of the intersections there is a picnic table so we stop for lunch. All we were missing were a couple of nice cold beers. I gotta remember to bring some along next time.

After lunch we only have 1km left to get back to our starting point. We could have done the loop a second time in the other direction however my knee and hands are starting to feel it. It's not worth pushing too much and we had great fun with the first loop. We bring back the bikes and head back to our AirBnB.

At the AirBnB we take a couple of beers and snacks and head off to a nearby park to relax and enjoy. We head to Cascade Park which is 10 minutes away, there is a small trek to do to get to a nice spot to have our drink. After the beer we decide to head over to McNears beach in San Rafael. This city is the next one north of Mill Valley. We find a couple of Adirondack chairs and chill there for a while. Upon our return to the car we notice a ticket in our windshield. When we initially arrived there was a booth but no one inside, we thought that it was late enough in the day and that you no longer had to pay. Surprise... We did. On our way out we see a guy that seems to work for the park. We ask for his help. He explains that when there is no one at the both we have to pay the machine. Both Ben and I missed the machine: it’s not obvious when you don't know it's there. The guy is kind to us and said that he would give us a chance and wave the ticket.

For supper we head to an Indian restaurant called Bombay Grill. The place was empty. we were the only customers. The food was really good. I'm glad we gave the place a chance.

  • Muir Woods

    27 September 2018, Amerika Syarikat ⋅ ⛅ 13 °C

Today we have a small adventure at the Muir Wood National Monument. This park is a heaven for the tallest trees in the world, the redwoods. These guys can grow up to 112 meters high and 7 meters wide at their base and the trees can live up to 2000 years. We do a 5 km walk enjoying the view of these trees. Again it is impossible to get a photo the represents the colours and how big these trees really are. You will have to come and visit to see yourself :)

After the park we drive to Muir beach to try and enjoy the ocean view. This morning is a challenge as there is quite a thick cloud cover. There is not much view so we decide to travel to higher grounds. We drive up top of Mt. Tamalpais. Halfway up to the top we pass the cloud cover whwre the sun is really hot. The difference in temperature is quite remarkable between under and over the cloud cover. At the top we get to see the cloud cover over the bay, it looks like a soft comfy duvet. Far far away we see only the top of a couple of high buildings in San Francisco. While we are up here we have a small lunch and head back down to our AirBnB.

I have a quick nap and then we have supper at a nice Italian restaurant called Piatta. We get a nice table with a great view of the Bay. After dinner we packs our bags trying to ensure that everything fits for our trip back home.
