    Last day of the trip

    October 11, 2018 in Greece ⋅ 🌬 22 °C

Our last day in Athens and also on this trip, well I supposed it is still another day on the plane back to Australia but that doesn't count.

Unfortunately Ximena tripped yesterday at the Parthenon while walking looking at the phone and rolled her ankle so we had to cancel the visit to the temple of Poseidon.

Late breakfast then we left the suitcases in custody and then off to explore Plaka for some souvenir shopping and then one las visit to the museum.

    At the Acropolis

    October 10, 2018 in Greece ⋅ 🌬 20 °C

We got up early and walked to the Acropolis so we were at the gate when it opened. The climb to the Acropolis wasn't that hard as expected, if anything less harder than the colosseum in Rome.

With no so many people around we managed to get some good photos.

By the time we were leaving (close to 10am) tour buses were coming with hordes of tourists. We walked down the Odeon of Herodes Atticus and the Theatre of Dionysus..

We then went to the museum to get more information regarding ancient Greece.

In the afternoon we went for a walk to check the Panathinaucou stadium and the temple of Olympian Zeus

    Flight to Athens..

    October 9, 2018 in Greece ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

No much to report today, left the hotel in Santorini at 9:30, quick check-in, on the plane by 11:20, landing in Athens 45 minutes later, at the hotel by 1.

The Acropolis is within a stone throw from the hotel and Partenon is visible from the dining room.

Looking at the Parthenon so high I just thought we needed some rest today....we are for a bit of a hike tomorrow

    A day in Oia

    October 8, 2018 in Greece ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

We got breakfast at 8:30am and had a bit of a rest before heading to Oia.. thanks to a couple we found out the bus to Oia stops at the bottom of Imerovigli and the best way to get there is back to Fira and then from there to Oia.

The bus to Fira was busy but nothing like the one to Oia.. people were standing even on the steps.. a sign that Oia was crowded.

We finally got to Oia and went to the 3 domes. There was a line of 10 people to get that classic photo, least the line was respected.

We then spent a couple of hours hoping between shops and getting souvenirs, at around 3pm the place was insanely crowded and hot so we went to the bus stop just to run into 100 people line.. we ended up grabbing at taxi and for 25 euros we were back in the hotel in 15 minutes.

    From Thira to Imerovigli

    October 7, 2018 in Greece ⋅ 🌙 18 °C

We woke up with a beautiful view of the sunrise , our breakfast served in our private balcony. We rested in the morning and in the afternoon visited Thira or Fira as it is mostly known and then walk back to Imerovigli... Fira is by far the biggest town filled with souvenir shops, restaurants and crazy drivers. We had lunch here and then started our walk back. We went up gradually with great views of "the caldera" we stopped for photos at the famous "three bells of Fira". The whole walk uphill was extremely exhausting...

Later in the evening we enjoyed the magic colours of the sunset and then had dinner at our balcony.

    Finally in Santorini

    October 6, 2018 in Greece ⋅ 🌙 18 °C

We left Venice in the morning amidst a bit of a rain although I managed to get some last minute souvenirs and photos. From Venice we caught a train to Mestre for 1.30 euros and from there a taxi to the airport. We had a nice flight to Santorini with connection in Vienna. Our plane from Marco Polo airport was delayed so at the end we only had time in Vienna for a coffee and back on the plane.

We finally arrived in Santorini at 8:45 pm and our pre-booked taxi took us our hotel "Ilioperato" in Imerovigli. There are stunning views of the "caldera" but being this late it is hard to say...

    Walking along the canals..

    October 5, 2018 in Italy ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

We planned to get to Piazza San marco early but we were so tired that instead we slept through. By the time we had breakfast we ended up going to the Vaporetto at 9am... of course the boat was full so we had to let a couple of boats before we got in.

We left the boat at Rialto bridge and after climbing to the top and getting some photos we walked to Piazza San Marco and the bridge of sights.

Instead of catching the Vaporetto back we decided to walk with no specific route, looking for that hidden canal.... and we found many spots, off the beaten path with great photo opportunities.

We ended up having a relaxed lunch in a restaurant away from all tourist places.

Interestingly, when we passed by piazza Santa Maria Formosa there was debris everywhere ans police so it was a bit scary but soon we realised that was all set up for a film..what we didn't know ia that it was for Spiderman.....

    In Pisa

    October 3, 2018 in Italy ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

As we always do, we got early and beat the crowds. We took the 7:50 train to Pisa and arrived at Pisa Centralle at 9am, well maybe not that early but enough to get there before all the tour buses. Ximena woke up perfectly fine...good news

Getting from the station to the Tower was failry simple, we just ride the LAM ROSSE bus for 10 minutes.

The place is spectacular and we got astonished looking at the Tower. In reality the complex also includes the Baptistery and the Duomo, all beautiful buildings. At around 10:30 am the buses were pouring people from every corner so we went for breakfast and then walked back to the station (around 2km)

To our surprise the trains back to Florence were cancelled due to a suicidal person that got killed on the way, fortunately by 3pm everything was restored and were back ar Florence at 4:20pm.

Our last stop was the Piazzale Michelangiolo with stunning vistas over Florence. Of course we didn't want to miss it but being so tired we grabbed a taxi that took us there for 20 Euros (from Pisa Santa Maria Novella). The views and atmosphere were worth the money.

    October 2, 2018 in Italy ⋅ 🌬 14 °C

Last breakfast at hotel Serena and then off to Roma Termini to catch our Frecciarossa train to Florence. The train went up to 250km/h so it covered the distance in a bit over an hour.

We arrived in Florence around 1 pm, had a rest and then went for a walk to see the city. The city centre is really compact and easily walked. Most of the roads are closed to traffic anyway.

The architecture is impressive from the Duomo, the baptistery to the palazzo and ponte vecchio. The streets are narrow and filled with shops.

We did not visit the galleries because first, they were all crowded and then we are not so fond of museums. On top of that Ximena is just getting over the virus she caught in Rome. We just enjoyed walking this beautiful city.
