Leaving Istanbul, drove through heavy industrial areas, which gradually turned to many fields of wheat

Stopped at truck stop for lunch. More history lessons on the bus. Think a lot of folks slept through them. You come this far, it’s hard to imagine skipping the important stuff. They wake up for the selfies though.

Heading for the Anzac Memorial and then a ferry ride across the Dardanelles and then on to our hotel.

Bus driver showed me the engine on the coach. Massive- recycles exhaust gasses to be green friendly. Bus costs around 300k. One of the nicest coaches I have been on.Lue lisää

Landing zone for the Aussies in June 1915. Hit the beach and straight up the hills. With machine guns blazing down on you - not fun. Large number of Turkish memorials up here as well.

Crossing at the Dardanelles to Canakkale

Left the scenes of WW1 to travel to Çanakkale and our hotel for the night. 40 minute bus ride and a 30 minute ferry ride brings us to our hotel. Interesting WW1 display at the ferry dock. We eat dinner and everyone crashes. First time I’ve had red wine served colder than a white. Huh?Lue lisää

Great stop. We went in groups of six to different families to eat. Great food- interesting to see how Turkish families eat and live in the country

MatkaajaWeather has been great. A lot of humidity so countryside seems to be covered with a lot of haze but temps are perfect. Lunch experience was very cool - even tried out my Google translate app which got everyone all excited - LOL. Had downloaded the Turkish dictionary ahead of time so I could use it offline

Trip to Ephesus

Starting two nights at this hotel, so nice not to pack again. Here’s the schedule for today. ( interesting that we used to live in Smyrna, GA). Call to prayer boomed out of loudspeakers every day reduces the need for an alarm clock. :)

DAY 6, Monday - Full Day in Izmir
Enjoy a full day at leisure in Izmir. With over 3500 years of history, the port city known historically as Smyrna offers a variety of impressive archaeological sites, not to mention easy access to ancient Ephesus. Perhaps, relax in the city and sip Türk kahvesi, authentic Turkish coffee, at a café set along the scenic Pasaport Quay. Don't miss the optional tour to Ephesus, considered one of the greatest ancient cities of the world. Here, you'll visit the House of the Virgin Mary, Basilica of St. John, the library of Celsus, temple of Hadrian, the theater and the Odeon. After lunch at a local restaurant return to Izmir

Meals: Breakfast, Dinner

On the highway heading south , we learn that when they were constructing this Highway, they found a marble highway used by Alexander the Great.
