    Flew out of Seattle on the 17th, arriving in London on the 18th. Two days in London but one was lost due to fatigue from the overnight flight from Seattle. Stayed in the Mitre Hotel in Greenwich. Visited the Royal Observatory. Saw a wild fox mooching food from visitors. Roger Rakestraw guided us to our hotel from Heathrow Airport and the following day guided us to the Tower of London, London Bridge, sites along the Thames, Buckingham Palace and that night we had dinner with him and his wife Di at a nice Vietnamese restaurant in Greenwich. Learned to navigate the London Underground - which was quite an adventure.Lue lisää

    Gijon, Spain

    Flew from London to the airport west of Gijon (known as the Oviedo or Asturias airport) with awesome view of the coastline while landing. Hiked in the area of Los Lagos de Covadonga in Los Picos de Europa with a harrowing bus ride included. Fun meals and sidra (hard apple cider) everywhere. Fun visit to Cangas de Onis, Ribadesella, and many walks around the very nice city of Gijon from our hotel located in the center of the city one block from the waterfront. Stayed in the Blue Marquesa Hotel - quite an adventure to find the place on a Saturday night!Lue lisää

    Cudillero, Spain

    Spent most of a day in the charming coastal town of Cudillero perched on steep slopes above the narrow bay. Except for limited vehicle access at the bottom of the village all the homes perched on the hills are accessed only by narrow stone walkways and steps. We took a wrong turn somewhere and ended up by the parochial cemetery - which, to our surprise, provided a perfect view and access to the town by walking down hundreds of stone steps to the center of town. Split a large sea bass for lunch. We are skipping dinner! Hiked up to the Mirador de la Estrecha for beautiful views of the town and harbor. Very pretty place!Lue lisää

    Santiago de Compostela, Spain

    Left the hotel at the airport early, ran out of time to refuel the rental car, drove in multiple circles at the airport because we couldn't figure out how to turn the rental car in. No signs. Each trip around the airport we eliminated more of the possibilities and finally settled on the winner. But it was a bit frazzling! Flew to Madrid then flew to Santiago. We later realized we would have saved time and money by simply driving our rental car from Gijon to Santiago. But, all's well that ends well. Then we walked thru the city to the huge cathedral that is the goal of all (pilgrims) who walk the Camino de Santiago. Of which there are many routes. We saw the bagpipe player welcoming the walkers through the arch into the plaza in front of the church. Walked the pedestrian alleys, had tapas, bought ice cream, and Gallician cookies. Watched the police arrest, face down in the walkway, a pink haired woman screaming obscenities in Spanish. Later we found out the train to Porto was sold out so we had to find bus tickets online. The internet makes traveling so much easier!Lue lisää

    Santiago de Compostela, Day 2

    We took a full day bus tour from Santiago northwest to the coast visiting numerous places including Punta de Maceiras, which has a picturesque 12th century bridge and stone water mills dating from the 17th and 18th centuries. On to the town of Muros with its bateas (floats made of eucalyptus wood with ropes attached for growing shellfish). Muros was delightful because we stumbled into a small bread shop, and ended up with a loaf of bread, a large cream puff, and two teas for six Euros. And it was fun!. Other stops included Ezare where a waterfall flows directly into waters of the Atlantic Ocean, Cape Finisterre and its lighthouse which was known as "The end of the earth" in Roman times, a small city named Cee the final stop at Muxia (where we were driven back to the bus by a sudden rain squall) which is the home of the legend of the Virgen in the Stone Boat, as well as a Celtic legend about balancing rocks.     Porto, Portugal, Days 1 and 2

    To Porto Portugal by bus the early evening of the 26th. Had difficulties getting into the apartment we had rented (in the midst of a downpour). Ended up at Hotel da Bolsa for the night. Nice breakfast the next day. Explored the riverfront, walked both levels of the Luis 1 bridge (the bridge in the photos). Hordes of tourists around. Very pretty city. Visited some of the must-see sites. Checked into our apartment. Visited a hole-in-the-wall restaurant/bar for a flaming sausage (photo) and wine. Having a grand time!Lue lisää

    Porto, Portugal, Day 3

    Our first night in the apartment went well. Eating breakfast and enjoying coffee. Did some more city exploring then took a 50 minute boat tour on the River Douro of the six bridges. Nice views of the city. Walked across the Luis 1 bridge again and bought tickets for port tasting and tour at the Burmester cellars then tasted four kinds of port at the Calem cellars while chatting with two fellows from Nottingham, England. Salads from the local mini-grocery for dinner, then we attended the Fado performance not far from the Hotel da Bolsa, which is a steep hike down and then back up to our apartment.Lue lisää

    Porto, Portugal, Day 4

    To the Clerigos church and tower at 9 a.m. We were first in the line! About a 200' climb up circular stairs to the two observation levels near the top of the tower. Beautiful 360 degree views. Then down to the Burmester cellars on the other side of the Luis 1 bridge for a short tour of the cellars followed by port tasting. Enjoyable. Nice conversation with people from Austria and Poland at our table. Stopped by a quirky business that sells canned seafood with interesting labels. On to visit the World of Wine (the chocolate and cork exhibitions). Nice exhibitions with occasional errors in English. But overpriced. Returned to the apartment stopping by a small restaurant for Curry Dourada (fish) along the way.Lue lisää

    Sintra, Portugal, Day 1

    Took a Uber to the bus station then a bus ride from Porto to Sintra. Nice ride with Wifi. Checked in to the Villa Aedan using an Uber - which had a tough time figuring out where it was. I had trouble locating the place on Google maps, too. After some unpacking we walked to the recommended Apeadeiro restaurant and had a nice mid-day meal. They even provided a glass of port and a pastry to each of us at the end of our meal. From there we walked to the Quinta de Regeleira, a private mansion with lots of novelties now owned by the City of Sintra as a tourist attraction. Fun place including the Well of Initiation, a 70' plus hole excavated in limestone with a circular stairway winding around an open center. Several quirky towers, lots of exotic flowers and trees with a chapel and a mansion right out of The Adams Family (the old TV show). Google maps gave us some trouble here and we ended up walking the wrong way for a while, adding a half mile or more to our walk to the entrance. Our entrance fee was seven euros - the cost for people over 65. Returned to our room at the Villa Aedan which requires three keys to get in. One for the front gate, one for the front door, and then one for the room. Walked into town again to explore and bought two clementines at a local store. Ate the last of the Queso Cabrales from Cangas de Onis.Lue lisää

    Sintra, Portugal, Day 2

    We visited the Palacio de Pena and the Castelo de Mouro. Both are on hills so we had to walk up (because the bus we were on got stuck in traffic) and then walk down a pretty nice path into town. The last kings and queens of Portugal lived part time in the Palacio de Pena which was a convent before royalty converted it into a palace. The Castelo de Mouro dates back to the 12th century when the Moors controlled the area.Lue lisää

    Checked out of the Villa Aedan in Sintra. Took the train to Lisbon, about 40 minutes. Taxi to our hotel. Joined our friends and the rest of the group for the bike tour. Took a walking tour from the hotel to the waterfront down the Avenida da Libertade, which commemorates many things in Portugal's history including the 1954 Revolution that overthrew the dictatorship. A fancy multi-course dinner complete with an impromptu Fado performance by the waiter with the help of his cell phone.Lue lisää

    Evora, Portugal

    Our group of 16, left Lisbon on a two hour bus trip to Evora, Portugal, a UNESCO heritage city which has ancient city walls, the remnants of a Roman temple, the bone chapel and a couple of Pousadas. Pousadas are old buildings, often convents, which were emptied in 1834 when the Portuguese king outlawed all religious orders. Our Pousada was a beautiful renovation of one of those abandoned convents. A local guide, Sylvia gave us an detailed tour of parts of the city including the 16th century aqueduct, built when the city was the capital of Portugal, city streets and the evolution of styles, and the remains of the Roman temple built on the 1st century AD to honor the emperor. Anna and I walked the old city wall after being sent to the wrong Pousada by a well-meaning local. We enjoyed hamburgers and wine at a tiny little eatery as we worked our way through the city to the correct Pousada. The next morning we toured the famous Bone Chapel, lined with the bones of some 500 monks. The chapel has an inscription over the entrance in Portuguese which says: "These bones are here waiting for your bones."Lue lisää

    Evora to Pousada Castelo Alcacer do Sal

    We headed out of town on our bicycles, ten ebikes, two regular bikes, and one tandem, plus the leaders were on regular bikes. A 43.9 mile ride through rural Portuguese country lanes with cattle with bells and cork trees and a mutitude of different species of wildflowers - including a red flowered wild pea. Saw the first of many stork condominiums (multiple nests in a single tree). Pedaled to the top of the hill overlooking the river Salado to our Pousada for the night, the Pousada Castelo Alcacer do Sal. The next morning we received a tour of the archaeological digs under the Pousada which had recovered evidence of humans more than two thousand years ago along with numerous artifacts from thousands of years of occupation.Lue lisää

    Alcacer to Sines, Portugal

    We bicycled 47.5 miles, with about an hour of that in light rain, from Alcacer to our hotel in Sines, Portugal, the Hotel Caso do Medico San Rafael. Right after our start, as we crossed a nice pedestrian bridge, I misplaced my phone on someone else's bicycle after taking a photo and thought I'd lost my phone. Many miles of narrow country lanes lined with wildflowers. Stopped at a restaurant for lunch. Had to wait 30-40 minutes because of Mother's Day. Had some nice grilled squid while drying out from the rain, then finished the ride to Sines. Walked the short distance to the remnants of an old fort then up to the top of a rebuilt wall with a statue of Vasco da Gama below. Nearby was an archeological dig of a former Roman era fish sauce factory. Neat views of the city beach below. And, of course, another exceptional dinner.Lue lisää

    Sines to Herdade do Touril

    Another very nice breakfast at the hotel, then we pushed our bicycles out of the underground garage and circled through city streets to begin our 42.7 mile ride to Herdade da Touril, an estate converted to a very nice country lodge complete with swimming pool, a donkey, sheep, and goats, all about one mile away from the coast. Had a tailwind today after headwinds the previous two days. Our first look at the famous cliffs, with periodic beaches that line much of the coast of this part of Portugal, the Algarve. Lots of gravel roads mixed with pavement that took us along shorelines, cliffs, beaches, stork nests, lots of agriculture, including a team picking beautiful carrots. Nifty room with cork headboard and wooden farm implements. Another great dinner with fish and wine.Lue lisää

    A short 34.9 mile ride up and down lots of hills, including some rough, rocky lanes. We started the day with a one mile rocky lane out and back to the cliff-lined coast near our lodging. Very scenic country then off via a wandering road route including some very long uphill and downhill routes, routes along irrigation canals, and sandy roads. Village on the cliffs. A stop at Mara Vilhas for lunch and walk down to the very pretty and very deep beach at the mouth of a river. Long downhill where I raced ahead then had to turn back and go look for our group of six because they had stopped for a minor bicycle malfunction. A last, steep rocky climb to the five star hotel/resort with awesome swimming pool - where I did five lengths. Cool room, though the construction arrangement of rooms in blocks is reminiscent of a prison. Bed even had curtains - which were pulled by staff while we were at dinner. Staff required to accompany us to our rooms and show us important stuff we needed to know. Black pork for dinner on huge log dining table.Lue lisää

    PdC to Sagres, Portugal

    Enjoyed another outstanding breakfast (with Rich and Michelle) and a walk on the grounds of this five star lodging. By 9:30 we were on our way into a National Park of Portugal, Stopped at beaches and boardwalks overlooking cliffs being pounded by the ocean waves. Stopped for lunch in Vila da Bispo where some of us skipped lunch in favor of a visit to an Aldi's grocery store. I bought a box of eight ice cream treats. Ate 3 1/2 and shared the rest! Tasty. Anna and I explored the immediate area including a monument to men, including ten Englishmen, who died in WWII. Biked on thru the countryside. Had a conversation with a herd of goats. On to the lighthouse at the Cape of St. Vincent, the westernmost point of the Iberian Peninsula. Rugged cliffs, capped by a thin layer of highly eroded limestone with lots of wildflowers that gave the appearance of a rock garden. Short stop at the remains of the Fortress of Belex, then on to our lodging for the night, the Pousada da Sagres, another converted convent. Six of us walked into and thru town and I separated from them to walk down to the city beach, a walk back up a path to the Pousada and then out to the headland and back with nice wildflowers along the way. Three course dinner at the hotel restaurant, including an awesome orange cake.Lue lisää

    Sagres to Lagos to Faro, Portugal

    Another fine breakfast then off to bicycle 25 miles to Lagos, along a path that took us back through the Vila da Bispo where we had lunch yesterday. We pedaled up and down winding roads through rural countryside past a meadow of brilliant red poppies. Stopped at a tourist beach village (lots of new condos) where Sally T. had me take a video of her doing a sand angel for a friend back home. On to Lagos for lunch at the Camilo Restaurant overlooking the famous cliffs of Lagos where the ocean has cut narrow channels into the cliffs that boom and thunder as the waves crash into the undersides of cantilevered cliffs. Very fun lunch with appetizer names I can't pronounce with grilled calamari and a mixed salad that was awesome. We loaded on to a bus for the trip to the city of Faro and our Hotel Eva Senses, right on the waterfront and public square with a 5th floor rooftop swimming pool (which we did not find time to use). After arrival we walked through the old city walls into the old town then back out into the commercial district where we stopped at an outdoor cafe for a treat and pitcher of sangria. Delightful weather. Returned to the hotel for the night.Lue lisää

    Faro to Tavira, Portugal

    Up for a fabulous breakfast in the Hotel Eva Senses on the fifth floor, then on to a bus to the Salina da Grelha, a family-owned salt production (from sea water) facility owned by the same family for more than 150 years - and which was a tide-powered water mill until the new motors of the industrial revolution made the tide mill uneconomic. Now the family (Veronica from the Czech Republic married the current owner) provides salt mine tours, sells specialty salt (we bought some) and provides an opportunity to swim in Mar Morto (Sea Dead), highly saline waters (200 g/kg vs 280 g/kg for the Dead Sea and about 30 g/kg for normal sea water). On our bikes for the 20+ miles ride to Tavira via bike trails through tidal flats and a side trip via small train to the beach Anchor Cemetery where hundreds of anchors were abandoned when the fishing industry (sardines) collapsed due to overfishing. Winding roads past orange orchards and lots of agriculture before doing a circle through the small city of Tavira (due to a miscommunication between the leaders about which hotel we were going to) before we pedaled to the front door of the Hotel Vila Gale, a large hotel that seemed to cater to German and British tourists. Time for a quick swim in the pool and a snack before our group gathered for our final dinner at a very popular restaurant (Coisa Linda - thing beautiful) for an outstanding dinner of Portuguese crab cake, cod with prawns (the whole prawn) and mussels, with rice and a flight of four desserts for each person. An under-the-lights walk back to the hotel on a bridge over the river at 10 p.m. and off to sleepy land.Lue lisää

    Tavira to Faro, Portugal

    Up early for our last breakfast with our bicycling friends. Most left at 8:30. We stayed until 11:30 which gave us time to explore Tavira, including the riverfront, the "Roman" bridge, which is a 1992 bridge located where a Roman bridge once provided a crossing over the river. A couple of tourist stores then a sign with an arrow that said "Castelo". Ever curious we followed the winding steep stairway up through buildings till we found ourselves in the midst of the ruins of an old Moorish Castle that was now a nifty botanical garden with labels, including jacaranda tree in bloom, a fig tree (ficus), and lots of flowers. We climbed the steep stone steps to the top of the wall for a great view of Tavira before returning via a circular route through town to our hotel to catch our ride to our lodging for the night at the Lemon Tree in Faro. Enjoyed our last dinner in Portugal at the Cidade Vilho (old city) Restaurant - a fish stew with monkfish, whole prawns, and mussels with rice. Yum!Lue lisää

    Our last day in Portugal. Breakfast in our lodging, the Lemon Tree, with eggs cooked to order. We took an Uber to the airport. Flew to Lisbon with long layover in crowded airport then on to London for the night at a Holiday Inn Express at Heathrow Had pizza in the cafe, then included breakfast the next morning. Flew to Seattle via Virgin Atlantic on the 13th. Took the Wenatchee Valley Shuttle home to Wenatchee.Lue lisää
