Scuba diving, beach restaurants, rented a motorbike and explored the island. Old town lights festival (releasing lit candles into the ocean), explored a cave.
TravelerStayed at Non La Mer Hostel, it was perfect. The owner is also a yoga instructor and she is super nice.

Koh Phi Phi

Reggae bar - amateur boxing bar
Partied with Scottish and Canadian friends. Ross, Sarah Jane, Matt, Donna. Sang karaoke, drank buckets.
Got food poisoning, probably from eating duck.
Did a half day boat trip around the island, swimming and snorkelling.Read more
TravelerStayed at Coco's Guesthouse. It was a great location because it was away from all the craziness. In another part of the island might have been even better.

Still recovering from the food poisoning in Koh Phi Phi. Slept and chilled on the beach.
Patong Beach area was crazy, ping pong shows, massage places that were clearly prostitutes, lots of bars and weed stores.Read more
TravelerStayed at Black Pantera Hostel. It was a very nice private room with AC and ensuite. But would recommend staying somewhere away from Patong area.

Krabi (Aonang)

We were planning to catch a same-day bus and ferry to Koh Tao, but our ferry arrived way later than the booking agent told us. So we spent one night in Aonang and caught the minivan & ferry the next day.
We chilled, shopped, and went kayaking & swimming in a mangrove river area. Kayaking in the rain was a welcomed break from the sun.Read more

Koh Tao

Spent 5 nights at Sky Pearl Guesthouse in a private room which was very nice.
Rented a scooter, checked out viewpoints and beaches. Did a yoga class. Did 4 scuba dives, Kate saw a whale shark! Calvin saw barracudas.
Lots of rain over the 5/6 days. Lots of time spent relaxing and playing cards.Read more

Went to Dash for an incredible & beautiful dinner, the Khao Soi was amazing. Lots of great food and good markets. Everything cheap including hostels/hotels.
Did a cooking class, cooked spring rolls and pad Thai and curry.
Went to an elephant sanctuary. Fed and bathed elephants.
Sunday night market with huge walking street in the middle of Old Town (big area within the old moat). Hiked up the Monk's Trail to a temple and small town. Visited with some old expats over unique wines, including a retired dentist that collects and smuggles art.Read more
TravelerStayed 2 nights at Big & O's House 2 and 2 nights at Baan Klang Vieng. Big & O's House was a chill vibe and they gave good travel and restaurant recommendations. Both were clean and great locations.

Chiang Dao

Based out of Chiang Dao and rented a scooter. Ripped around doing different self-guided hikes. Walking through a remote town and farmer fields. Ate pad thai out of a bag at the end point.
Saw various waterfalls.
Ate Thai style BBQ and DIY soup at buffet restaurants.
Scootered by elephants on the road.Read more
TravelerStayed at Huan Chiang Dao Resort. It was cheap, quiet, absolutely would go back. The owner was very friendly and spoke English well.

Spent 2 nights in Tha Ton. We wanted to rent a motorbike and hike, but we found out here that not many tourists come here and it hasn't been the same since Covid. There are no motorbike rentals and there is a lot of damage from a big flood earlier this year. There is also no public boat transit down the river like we were planning (since Covid).
We went to the Friday night market, we hiked up to the local temple, Wat Tha Ton which was a very cool temple and had scenic views.
We rented bicycles and the local who rented the bikes to us, took us on an impromptu bike ride in the countryside for 45 minutes. It was beautiful and amazing!Read more
TravelerWe stayed at Legend Home Stay. Our host, Nong, and her husband were both amazing and so friendly. They always had different food for us to try. And breakfast was included and served right at 8am. There are only 2 suites. The other was filled by Mateo, an older Italian man that lives in Belgium. We visited with him a lot, he was very nice.

Spent one night in Mae Salong on our journey to Chiang Rai.
We hired a driver and stopped at a nice garden & market, a tea plantation, a hill village that makes their own coffee.
Mae Salong is a Chinese town. We ate amazing gyoza and Chinese noodles.Read more

Made friends with a couple from Swift Current on our transit from Mae Salong and had dinner with them (Jessy and Piper).

Stayed overnight during our 2 day "slow boat" to Luang Prabang. Sat on the boat across from a nice German couple, Chris and Anna. Taught them how to play crib. Went for dinner and a nice river view and sat with Brakash from Malaysia.Read more

Rented a motorbike, went to Kuang Si Waterfall and Nahm Dong Park. Had some great Indian and local food. Stressfully booked a train to Viang Vieng. Went bowling with Jessy and Piper. Lots of tourist areas crowded with Chinese tourists.Read more
TravelerStayed at Sa Sa Lao Guesthouse. Was decent, had a good restaurant, chess and billiards. Had a room with 4 bunk beds (8 beds) and shared 1 bottom bunk 😂

Decided to slow down for the Christmas break. Stayed at a hotel with a pool and buffet breakfast.
Met up and played cards with the Romanian couple that we met on the boat to Luang Prabang, Paula and Vasile.
Ran into Matteo on our last night.
Amazing sunset views and rooftop bars.
Taking tire tubes through the Water Cave, Blue Lagoons (swimming holes with ziplines and rope swings), other caves.
Paramotor on Boxing Day (powered para gliding).
Tubing and kayaking on the river.
Indian food and mini decorations and Santa hats on Christmas Day.Read more

Rented a scooter and ripped to a short hike / viewpoint, no other tourists, sandy challenging roads.
Night market.
Mailed Khao Soi to Canada, hope it makes it!

Bussed from Vientiane to Thakhek, starting point to rent a motorbike and so "The Thakhek Loop", which is a 3-4 motorbike trip.
We stayed an extra night in Thakhek because I wasn't feeling good and slept and relaxed most of the day.Read more

Day 1 of Thakhek Loop.
Spent the day checking out stop including an an amazing cave, Xieng Liap Cave. Had to take an emergency poop in the cave and sacrificed a sock. The drive was very scenic and beautiful.
Went to a fire and buffet BBQ for New Years Eve. Didn't make it to midnight, Kate not feeling well.Read more

Day 2 of Thakhek Loop.
Had a very scenic drive and stopped at some nice viewpoints along the side of the road.
Cut our day short because Kate wasn't feeling well. So we stopped early in Thabak (planned to go to Kong Lor) and found a nice Guesthouse on the river.
Kate slept and Calvin went to Dragon Cave by himself. Cool cave with a nice viewpoint, had to take an emergency poop in a discreet spot on the way up to the viewpoint.Read more

Day 3 of Thakhek Loop.
Slept in, Kate still not feeling well. Checked out the Kai Waterfall, it was abandoned and kind of eerie. Had to take an emergency poop in an abandoned squat toilet. Motorbiked to Kong Lor and found a place, Kate continued to sleep and Calvin explored town area.Read more
TravelerKong Lor Eco Lodge. Decent and $12/night for a bungalow. Seems like Spring River Resort is the place to stay though. It was beautiful, but was fully booked when we arrived. More expensive though.

Thakhek - Night Bus to Don Det

Day 5 of Thakhek Loop.
The Rock Viewpoint - 2 hour zipline and adventure tour. Lunch at the viewpoint and then drive back to Thakhek. Ate, grabbed our bags, and hopped on the 12 hour night bus to Dondet. Bed on the bus was shared and pretty small for us.Read more
