  • Inch Beach & Dingle

    26. september 2023, Irland ⋅ ⛅ 55 °F

We continued our journey to Dingle and stopped at Inch Beach on the way in. Inch Beach stretches across Dingle Bay. We spotted a rainbow and some surfers. We arrived in Dingle and found Murphy's Pub Bed & Breakfast, our home for the next two nights. We had dinner in the pub and tried to decide if we should attempt the Slea Head Drive the next morning because a tropical storm was about to hit the Southwestern portion of Ireland!Les mer

  • Slea Head Drive

    27. september 2023, Irland ⋅ 🌧 59 °F

We woke up to gusty winds and a light rain so we headed down to the pub for breakfast. Wes got a traditional Irish breakfast (yeah, the one with the white and black puddings) while Rachel went with a waffle and fruit. We decided to attempt the Slea Head Drive despite the weather conditions. Slea Head Drive is 38km route that takes you around the Dingle Peninsula with various places to stop and take in the views. Our first stop along the drive was Ceann Tra' or Ventry Beach. Next we checked out the Fahan Beehive huts; houses made from stacked rings of stone, one of top of the other, positioning each layer a little further inward, without any mortar, until a snug, pointed roof was formed to cap the structure. These were thought to have been built anywhere between the eighth to 12th centuries. It was onto Cashel Murphy, which is believed to date back to about 3200bc, and consists of defensive walls protecting 5 family huts.Les mer

  • Continuing Along the Slea Head Drive

    27. september 2023, Irland ⋅ 🌧 59 °F

We left the baby lambs behind and found a few more beehive huts at Ceann Sleibhe, which is another viewpoint to stop off at along the drive. Our view of the ocean wasn't very clear so we didn't stay long. We drove on and came to the Cross at Slea Head. We passed up Coumeenoole Beach and Dunquin Pier because it had started raining and visibility was poor. We drove down to the Clogher Strand. It looked like a great spot to spend a warm, sunny day. We made our way to our last stop on the Slea Head Drive, the Gallarus Oratory. Gallarus Oratory is believed to be over 1000 years old and is the best perserved ancient church in Ireland.Les mer

  • Ce Dhun Chaoin (Dunquin Pier)

    27. september 2023, Irland ⋅ 🌬 59 °F

The rain and fog had cleared out for the day so we drove out to the Dunquin Pier. This was the second spot that Rachel was looking forward on the Slea Head Drive and unfortunately had to drive on past it earlier due to the weather. Although it was still cloudy, the sun had come out just before sunset, creating a wonderful evening sky. The wind was insane and nearly knocked Rachel over! We could see the Blasket Islands in the distance. We stopped by Murphy's Ice Cream, soooo delicious! (Rachel lost a scoop of hers when it fell of the cone and onto the street.) Made a visit into O'Sullivan's Courthouse Pub and then it was back to Murphy's Pub & B&B for one more night.Les mer

  • A Jaunting Good Time

    28. september 2023, Irland ⋅ 🌬 55 °F

We left Dingle and headed east to the Gap of Dunloe. This was the first of a few stops that we made along the Ring of Kerry. We arrived at Kate Kearney's Cottage and was able to get a jaunting car to take us through the Gap of Dunloe. The Gap of Dunloe is a narrow mountain pass forged between the MacGillycuddy Reeks and the Purple Mountain ranges by glacial flows. Once again, there was a mist in the air and thick cloud coverage but that didn't take away from the beauty of the area. We rode past the Wishing Bridge and to the Head of the Gap of Dunloe before turning around and going back to Kate's. Our jaunting cart driver recommended a viewing spot, the Aghadoe Overlook, that overlooks Lough Leane and the Killarney Valley so we drove by there on the way to Ross Castle.Les mer

  • Ross Castle & Muckross Abbey

    28. september 2023, Irland ⋅ 🌧 57 °F

We stopped to take a quick look at Ross Castle, a 15th century tower house, but did not go inside. We made our way to Muckross Abbey. The Abbey was founded in 1448 as a Franciscan friary. Inside the Abbey is a giant Yew tree, which is symbolic of everlasting life and rebirth. The yew tree was planted in 1448 and still grows on today. The Abbey has been incredibly preserved throughout and you do feel like you are stepping back in time.Les mer

  • Torc Waterfall & Ladies View

    28. september 2023, Irland ⋅ 🌧 57 °F

We made two more stops along the Ring of Kerry before heading to our next B&B. The first was the Torc Waterfall. The rain had picked up on our drive to the waterfall. We hiked a short path to the waterfall that ran along the river. The waterfall is at the base of Torc Mountain and is 66ft high and 360ft long. Our last stop along the Ring was at Ladies View. From Ladies View, we could see Upper Lake, Purple Mountain (on our left) and Torc Mountain (on our right). It is one of Kerry's best viewpoints and it lived up to it's reputation!Les mer
