Final day in Moab. Tomorrow we drive up to Slat Lake City to ride around a bit and I get ready to fly home Tuesday.
It has honestly helped with the loneliness and tough days knowing y’all are out there checking in on me and staying connected. I can’t tell you how much I’ve appreciated and needed that. Thank you.
I’ll leave you with some slick rock hi-jinx from an epic ride today on the Navajo Rocks loop…hardest, best riding I’ve ever done- but not as hard as it was on some other riders :)
Riders were falling out left and right today…but Virginia was riding clean and punching hard. Oh and my motel tonight, what else would it be? Enjoy!!Read more

Awesome campsite on BLM outside of Moab- with dinner entertainment from a bunch of dudes power parachuting. Fun downhilling with a first taste of slick rock riding the Mag 7 trails.

Coming in from Fruita we camped along the Colorado river. Did a little dirt road riding and cooked a killer Italian feast with Steph’s meatball recipe. Woke up the next morning, loaded up the bike for the last time and road the last leg into Moab.Read more

A snapshot of VA’s future from Dinosaur, CO…and the future is bright.
Add Fruita, CO to your list if you haven’t been yet- especially if you like mountain biking. For better or for worse- according to the locals- the secret of Fruita is out and it is beginning to draw comparisons to Moab. I’ll reserve judgement on that but it is a really cool town centered around riding….great desert mountain riding. They’ve clearly made a choice as a town to go all in on creating amazing MTB trail and camping (free) complexes…really well done.
If you haven’t seen the Life of Pie film on the Banff tour it’s worth watching. The restaurant/community living room it’s based on is a Fruita fixture. Riding here for a couple days then off toward Moab. Have a great week!Read more

Relaxing day in Flaming Gorge on the Green River…very cold water offsetting very hot sun. Beautiful desert camping with a dance party vibe courtesy of DJ EZ. Really fun climbing and dirt road riding through the back country.
Now in Vernal, UT crashing at OARS with Tony and fellow RVA’er Travis Dodge. Tomorrow onto Fruita/Grand Junction for a couple days of MTB. Stoked!Read more

Climbed up and out of Jackson Hole and onto “the rim” which is a high plain next to the Wind River range in southern WY.
Do you think St. Hubert’s knows Jagermeister stole their logo?
Picked up the Green River and will follow that all the way into Utah. Great BLM wild camping all along the river.
But the big news is that I’ve now linked up with an old friend- and my original RO hire- Tony Ezell for part 2 of the trip. Will now be car camping with Tony on BLM land and doing day rides to check out different areas. So you’ll see my dot jumping around on the map.
Heading down to Flaming Gorge then onto Grand Junction/Fruita and Moab for days of MTB. Going to be an adjustment but I’m stoked for a change to my routine and for the great companionship. Onward!Read more

Heaven on earth. That’s it. Arrived in 29° rain but woke up to one of the two most beautiful places I’ve ever seen (The other being Wengen, Switzerland). Whatever your travel plans, this place has got to be on your list.
Took advantage of a day off for a fantastic mountain bike ride. Staying with fantastic Warm Shower Hosts Holly and Warren. If it wasn’t for it being one of the most expensive places in the US to live, it’d be easy to stay. Heading out tomorrow for a ride through the mountains in southern Wyoming heading to Utah. Have a great week y’allRead more

Great ride today. 39 miles up and over the Rockies through Togwatee pass. No shade being thrown at Eastern slope but I don’t connect with the dry, rocky landscape there like I do a verdant, alpine landscape…lodge pole pine, birch, stunning meadows that look like their aflame, gorgeous peaks, wildlife…that’s my cup of tea. Last 10 miles of the climb made me earn it and the payoff was so worth it.
Weather turning cold and rainy tomorrow. Hope to catch a peak of Grand Teton as I descend into Jackson Hole. Will be there for a few days. Have a great weekend!!Read more

Did I mention the wind? Getting used to it now and has certainly increased my strength and confidence on the bike. Got to ride some more gravel which led me to a campsite on a reservoir where I was seemingly the only person in the county. After 30 mph winds calmed down for a pleasant dinner, at 9:30 PM winds kicked up to about 50 mph out of nowhere, filling my tent and sleeping bag with sand. And blowing my stuff halfway across Wyoming. I made the decision to take shelter in a pit toilet. Less than ideal sleep that night…Jammed an empty toilet paper roll in the door for some ventilation. Freezing cold sleeping in my camp chair with a sleeping bag draped over me.
Hopped back on the bike and headed out for Dubois deep up a valley at the foot of the mountains- everything looks like Arizona desert mountains on the Eastern slope in this rain shadow of the Rockies. Another day of winds gusting up to 47 mph by the end of the ride, alongside the Windriver Reservation where Native Americans have been shoved onto resourceless, infertile wasteland…Enjoyed sharing lunch with some local folks and hearing about their lives.
Pushed on through a 55 mile day and pulled into Dubois for a great night of food, beer, and new friends. Gained some good elevation and am ready to cross through the Togwatee pass over the Rockies down into Jackson Hole tomorrow. Game onRead more

Well here is where things started getting more interesting. Turns out the Jackelope is a revered legend…sort of like Nessie in Scotland.
Had a wonderful stay with Warm Shower hosts Loraine and Charlie. They were loading up their homemade trailer and heading to Colorado but were still kind enough to let me regroup at their house in Casper. Their retirement life looks like a fabulous dream that most folks could make happen. It all comes down to getting out there.
Due to days on end of massive headwinds and bleak overnighting options on the horizon, I opted for a taxi ride from Casper to Shoshoni. Happened to get the owner of the company as my driver. English guy with a fabulous story spanning from electrical engineer in England to chasing love and a second career in America. Insisted on giving me an off the beaten track tour of Wyoming… For which I’m super appreciative. If it wasn’t for him, I wouldn’t have ended up cycling through and camping in the Wind River Canyon… astoundingly beautiful. Went to compensate him for his extra time and he refused any money, just happy to turn me onto some hidden treasures. So cool. Stay tuned for war of the winds II…Read more
Going to miss checking on ya! 😀
Ha ha. Now it’s my turn. Any way to follow your season?
