  • DeLeon Springs

    10 Maret, Amerika Serikat ⋅ 🌧 72 °F

This morning was rather stormy. Rain and wind. Nearby even had some tornado warnings. We were in some narrow channels, so pretty much protected from any wind. The route today took us off the St. John’s River and on the Zeigler Dead River, Norris Dead River, through Lake Woodruff, Spring Garden Creek and Spring Garden Lake, into DeLeon Springs. All shallow water today. Nothing over 6’ deep, and much of it 3-4’ deep. The last lake to get through, Spring Garden, was probably only 2’ deep and much of the short distance we go through it is churning up mud with the engine. Also had to break through some Water Hyacinth in one of the Dead rivers, as it was completely blocking the channel. We docked on the state park dock, and headed over to the Old Sugar Mill restaurant for lunch, where I hankered for a Cuban Sandwich and Rosanne had a French Dip sandwich. The main reason we came into DeLeon Springs, was for the pancake breakfast at the Old Sugar Mill, which we will do tomorrow. Spent the rest of the day walking some around the park, relaxing and I got my kayak down and peddled around the springs. The winds were still blowing this afternoon, and Spring Garden lake was getting kicked up pretty good. Here in the springs we are pretty well protected. We left the dock and are now anchored for the evening. Watching some net fisherman and Rosanne is watching a manatee surface now and then about 60’ away from our boat.Baca selengkapnya

Quiet night anchored in DeLeon Springs. Got up this morning and motored back over to the dock, and headed over to the Old SugarMill Pancake restaurant. A fun place, as you can make your own pancakes on a griddle in the table. You can have buttermilk, buck wheat and multi-grain pancakes. You can also order bacon or other meat that is already cooked, or eggs, which you also cook yourself. It’s kind of a unique and favorite place to go before or after the C-Brat gathering at Hontoon. Several ways to get there, but of course we took the shortest through the shallower waterways that I talked about in yesterday’s post. I did talk with one of the DeLeon Springs Tour Boat captains about the best way to get through Spring Garden Lake. The track I had learned and been using wasn’t the best way to go. She showed me on the charts where the deeper water was, and then I also followed her tour boat out this morning. Still kicked up some mud, but other than a short distance, I did have a bit deeper water for most of the path. Temperatures right now are in the upper 40’s lower 50’s at night, and low 80’s during the day, with plenty of sunshine. We saw several manatees while in DeLeon Springs. After breakfast, and following the tour boat out, we continued on our way through Spring Garden Creek, across the north end of Lake Woodruff, and then through Lake Dexter back into the St. John’s River. Finally back into deeper water! (Lakes Woodruff and Dexter are also both shallow.) Between Astor, FL and Lake George, I detoured into Blue Creek. Very scenic creek where manatees also hang out. There use to be a lot of bird houses hung along the creek, but many are gone now. We only saw a few, but didn’t get any photos. Coming out of Blue Creek, back on the St. John’s for a short distance, then through some old barge fender rails marking the entrance into Lake George. Cut across the SW corner and crossed the shallow bar into Silver Glen Springs. There is a Rosborough gathering going on, (another trailerable trawler) and Rosanne counted 16 of those brand boats in here. Two of our gathering C-Dory’s were also here, C-Otter and Lake Effect. There are at least a couple dozen manatees in here as well. With the clear water, they are easy to see and fun to watch. We kayaked all around them, taking more photos than necessary! I noticed some Pleco’s (Plecostomus Cat Fish. When I had fish aquariums, the Pleco was one of my favorite fish to have, as they kept the tank clean.) I watched one Pleco sucking on a manatee’s back, likely cleaning off the algae and other bacteria and growth. We may spend two nights in here. The water stays around 72 degrees with the spring head here. Oh, also we noticed some areas with lots of pipe fencing. A sign said these areas are underwater grass restoration sites, likely for the manatees. In fact, Silver Glen Springs may soon close to all boat traffic. We’ve seen many sings in the area advertising meetings in regards to this.Baca selengkapnya

  • Silver Glen Springs, Day two

    12 Maret, Amerika Serikat ⋅ ☀️ 63 °F

Started out as a cool morning, 46 degrees. And sunny. However by this afternoon it was 80. A bit of a breeze all day. Today was just spent relaxing, kayaking, and enjoying the manatees and a couple Bald Eagles. All the Rosborough boats left this morning, and only a few day trippers came in. Tonight, we, along with C-Otter and Lake Effect, have the Springs to ourselves.Baca selengkapnya

  • Salt Springs

    13 Maret, Amerika Serikat ⋅ ☀️ 77 °F

After another nice night in Silver Glen Springs, we only had a little over 10 miles to go to Salt Springs. Got in over the bar and up the 5 mile run into the springs. We initially stopped at the boat launch dock, on the outside or it, by beaching the bow and tying the stern to the dock. Walked a short distance to the Grill Out, a small walk/drive up restaurant with an outdoor seating area, that we remembered from before. (Use to be called Papa Joes). I had some good taco’s and a root beer milk shake while Rosanne had chicken tenders. After lunch, we walked back to the boat, and moved over closer to the spring head to anchor. Spent the rest of the day relaxing, kayaking, and watching the manatees, turtles and birds here. Only one other boat anchored in here with us this evening. The 5 miles run up here, with some shallow water, keeps it relatively quiet in here. We’ll spend two nights here.Baca selengkapnya

  • Salt Springs day two

    14 Maret, Amerika Serikat ⋅ ☀️ 81 °F

Today was another day of just relaxing. We stayed on anchor today, here in Salt Springs. Maybe a dozen day trippers came in to enjoy the water and sunshine. A little breezy out, but sunny and 79 degrees. (I hear back home we got up to 77.) Not many manatees, but saw a few. Kayaked some and read. Didn't take many photos.Baca selengkapnya

  • Palatka

    14 Maret, Amerika Serikat ⋅ ☁️ 70 °F

Got an earlier start today, so saw the sunrise in Salt Springs. Rather choppy coming across the north end of Lake George with the breeze. Cruised 38 nautical miles to Palatka. Pretty busy day on the water today, with many fishing boats. Found out why at Palatka, as there was a big fishing tournament going on. Enjoyed the scenery as we cruised. Passed two high speed twin hull racing boats with twin 500hp outboards. Barely able to catch a photo of one of them. (Passing on the water means meeting in opposite directions.) Saw one sunk boat and also two boats rafted together that were very likely home to homeless. We slipped into the free dock at Palatka, and walked around town a bit. Stopped at the Angel Diner to get a milk shake. Busy place! Saw several pretty murals. Went to 4:30 mass at St. Monica Catholic Church, then returned to the boat. The 1 ft chop was bouncing the boat and dock pretty good, so we decided to cast off and cross the river to the leeward side of land. This is as far north or downstream on the St. John’s that we will come this trip.Baca selengkapnya

  • Welaka

    16 Maret, Amerika Serikat ⋅ ☁️ 75 °F

After breakfast and before pulling up anchor, I streamed my church service from Christ Lutheran Church. Left the anchorage on the St. John’s river, and then cut off to take Murphy Creek around Murphy Island. Back on the St. John’s a short distance and then through 7 sister’s islands. Came out of the islands, crossed the St. John’s, and into a small loop past St. John’s Ship Builders. There were two ships in there they appeared to be working on. One a tug, the other a cruise ship that AIS was transmitting the name of Jacks or Better 1. Doing a little googling, it appears it was a casino ship from Texas. Slipped into the free dock at Welaka around 2, under a tornado watch. That ended about 10 minutes ago, but I’m watching a thunderstorm pass overhead as I write this. Nice to be in a cabin boat and not a bow rider or fishing boat! Later Rosanne and I will walk up to Shrimps R Us restaurant for supper. We’ll stay slipped here over night. Saw very few boats today, most all smaller fishing boats, likely due to the overcast skies, winds and chance for showers. We did pass another C-Dory, Southwind, who was at the C-Brat gathering earlier. They live in the area and had gone home after the gathering, but were back on the water heading to Jacksonville.Baca selengkapnya

  • Back in Silver Glen Springs

    16 Maret, Amerika Serikat ⋅ 🌙 72 °F

Quiet night docked last night, but could hear the winds starting to come up this morning. After breakfast we walked up to Dollar General to purchase a few items. Was pretty windy on the river and Lake George today, with winds blowing around 15-20 mph. 1 foot of chop when we were in the open, but fortunately quartering off the the stern. Pushed the power up today and cruised 2/3’s the way on plane. Came back in to Silver Glen Springs for the day/night. A few other boats, but we haven’t seen any manatees here today. With an outside air temp of 65, the 74 degree water of the springs felt warm. I got in to set my stern anchor to keep us from swinging much, and also to go around and clean the boat’s hull. (Water depth here is only about 4-5 feet.) Also, shortly after leaving the dock at Welaka, I realized that overnight the waves or a fish must have knocked my chartplotter’s transducer up, so I wasn’t getting a depth reading. I did use my boat hook to feel around and push it down until it worked. In the springs here, with the clear water, I adjusted it appropriately.Baca selengkapnya

  • Blue Springs State Park

    18 Maret, Amerika Serikat ⋅ ☀️ 73 °F

Woke up to a bit of a foggy morning in Silver Glen Springs. That happens when the water temp is 73 and the air temp is 46! We did see one manatee come into Silver Glen just before we left. Otherwise, we didn’t see any in here this time. Last evening, we watched the two Bald Eagles that live nearby, perch on a tree high above us. Another snarly day on Lake George as I think the winds were about 15 mph out of the NE. Again pushed the power up and got on plane for couple of miles until we are off the lake and back into the St. John’s channel. Stopped at Ed Stone park to offload the kayaks and equipment back into the pickup. Then cruised to Blue Springs State Park. We beached C-Traveler and then walked around the park some checking the manatees out in the springs. Currently the board walk is closed about half way up, at the concession, so unable to walk it all the way up to the spring head. (But we’ve been there before.) Tonight will be our last night on the water. Found a nice loop off the main channel, just across from Blue Springs. Watched one of the park tour boats come through here a bit ago.Baca selengkapnya

  • End of this trip.

    19 Maret, Amerika Serikat ⋅ ☀️ 72 °F

Woke up to a very foggy morning. Didn’t clear up until we had gone about a mile. We met one other fishing boat in the fog, and I didn’t see him until we were about 30 feet apart. But both of us were moving pretty slow! Slipped back in at Hontoon Island State Park, where I prepped the boat for travel home. I needed a haircut, so Rosanne did the honors. She is pretty good at cutting hair. At least mine….it’s pretty easy. Lol. Took a 2.4 mile hike back past the park campground. Showered, ate lunch and then headed for Ed Stone Park. Did get to see the resident alligator one more time before departing Hontoon. Also took some photos of the Turkey Vultures that hang out there. Took our time getting C-Traveler loaded on the trailer and things moved around for the drive home. This evening we are at the Perry, FL, Walmart. We’ll take a few days driving home, stopping near Clarksville TN for one night to visit with Rosanne’s Uncle. Stats for this trip. 277nm or 311 statute miles. 78 gals fuel burned. Average speed of 5kts. I’ll shut this trip blog down with this last post. I’ll be blogging again later in April for a trip to Lake Powell and then the PNW.Baca selengkapnya
