    MFSRBF Volunteer Welcome BBQ

    We walk here to the Stockman's Bar at the festival area, with Lisa and Tony, and a lovely lady (forgotten her name!) that is camping beside Lisa and Tony.
    As volunteers we are fed a very nice BBQ - bread, steak, hamburgers, sausages, cooked onion and coleslaw with choice of sauces. Our 1st drinks are free (drink ticket in our volunteer packs). Nice opportunity to chat with fellow volunteers - for Rog and I, having 'worked' the past 3 days - there are quite a few familiar friendly faces.
    Enough BBQ food - that all in our group go back for 2nds. I have a steak sandwich, followed by a hamburger on bread with onion and tomato sauce - all delicious.
    There are a couple of quick and casual - 'welcome' speeches from a couple of organisers - Dave and Lisa. Then we're all ready to head back to our camps. We return with our same group - saying our goodnights once we reach Lisa and Tony's and ??? campground - and Rog and I walk on further to ours.    Читать далее

    1st day MFSRBF Event Corryong

    I walk to the event area from our campground, knowing I'll meet up with Roger when he's finished with his doctors appointment.
    Very exciting to see how our set up has finished up for the 1st day. I have a quick walk around the vendors section to see what's on offer - certainly could get a hat and country outfits for sure!
    I'm 'keyed up', and looking forward to Barb and Adrian arriving this morning. They will get to their campground (Clancy's Overflow) and find their camp site, then walk on over. I'm guessing I'll see them around midday.
    I go and settle myself at the RM Williams Arena on the provided metal seating to watch the Working Cattle Dog Heats. It's not long that I get a message from Rog - asking where I am. Let him know and he finds me. He's not happy with my seating choice (I concede I'm too low to see well into the arena) so we shift more into the middle of the seating and abit higher up. It is better, but I'm worried it won't be so easy for Barb and Adrian to find us. Shouldn't have worried - with messaging to Barb - they find us when we stand up and wave. Yay! So lovely to see them! It's been too long since Barb and I caught up in person. Now to enjoy some time together. We watch the Muster Dog set before the 4 of us go looking for some lunch. Rog, Barb and I end up with Thai (Chicken Pad Thai) - Adrian enjoys something else! We sit together in the shade of the eating area beside the bar. Next Barb and Adrian go for a wander to check out the vendors, Rog and I go for a wander in our own directions - plans to meet up together again around 2pm at the main stage for the Poets Variety Concert. I get to this and am sitting by myself up front out in the sun - Adrian comes and fetches me - Barb and himself have got a possie in the shade near the fence (back area of the stage seating). This is nice and comfy, Rog shows up too. Not too interested in the concert - so happy catching up with Barb and Adrian. Our next move, we all head back to the RM Williams Arena for the 3pm Trainers Challenge Round 1. This puts 3 Trainers up against each other - show casing their styles of horse training - each choosing a young horse to work with over the next 3 days. Out of the bunch of horses they pick from - I'm delighted that the horse I fancied is selected. We watch this 2.5 hour 1st session. The horse I liked is going great with his trainer - look well ahead so far! After this, Barb and I go for a loo break and then Barb kindly lines up with me in the Merchandise queue. Believe me, this queue is alot shorter than what it has been - I've got my sights set on getting a MFSRBF black puffa vest....we'll see how I go, rumour in the line is that quite a few items are sold out already (this is the 1st of 4 event days!). Roger calls by to remind us it won't be long until the MFSR Grand Opening is due to start at 6.30pm and for us to meet back up with them (Adrian and Rog) in the bar area. Thankfully, before they shut for the day, Barb and I get to select our merch purchases (glad Barb getting something too - nice green T-shirt) - the vest I'm after, my usual size is sold out, but I'm happy to go up a size. Now catch up with our fellas and go get seats back at RM Williams Arena for the Festival Opening Ceremony. This is great - it goes for just over an hour. Barb and Adrian now ready to head back to their camp (they've still got to settle in - understandably). Rog and I go and grab a late tea - calamari, salad and chips for me, Burger and chips for Rog - before heading back to seats at RM Williams Arena to watch the Working Cattle Dog Championships Finals. So enjoy watching the skills of the dogs with their handlers. When this finishes it's after 9pm so Rog and I more than ready to walk back to camp (takes 20 minutes).    Читать далее

    2nd day MFSRBF Event Corryong

    We leave our camp at 7.30am to walk to catch a bus to the Re-enactment. We return on a bus from the Re-enactment and get dropped off at the MFSRBF event area at 1.15pm. Roger and I go get some lunch, chicken dimsims for me, I've forgotten what Rog got! I'm ready to go and get a seat in RM Williams Arena to watch the 2pm Trainers Challenge Round 2. Roger happier to go for a wander about for a while. I find Lisa already seated in the 'usual' area that we sit in at RM Williams Arena - so I enjoy watching the 2nd round of the challenge with her, and filling her in on what the trainers and horses are up to as she missed Round 1. Roger comes and joins us near the end of the 1.5 hour session. I'm happy that the horse I like best is still going great with his trainer - they won the 1st round, and I reckon they'll be on track to win this round too. After this, I head over to watch the Dog Jump on the Rec Reserve Oval, Lisa heads off to check on Tony who's back at their camp. Roger just goes off to poke around - we do meet up just after the Dog Jump finishes. We go to the bar and get a drink, before settling ourselves back on the seating at RM Williams Arena, ready for the 5pm Feature Cut Out. This then leads to watching the Rodeo 6.30pm Wrangler Xtreme Broncs. During this I get a message from Barb - we'll meet up around 7.30pm at the mainstage, music time. Adrian and Barb have got a great spot saved for us when Rog and I meet up with them, we're 2nd row from the front of stage - off to the RHS so we're not fully behind the dance area - perfect! We're now nice and rugged up as it's a cold evening (calm) - ready to sit back and enjoy some beaut performers - the music is great. Max Jackson is terrific - she can sing! Fanny Lumsden is a livewire, really good too. Then of course, happy to hear The Wolfe Brothers. It's around 10.30pm when Wolfe Brothers set finishes (Rog has been nodding off) so we're all in agreement that we'll call it a night - missing Wade Forster.     MRSRBF Re-enactment 2nd day

    Woo hoo! Roger and I finally get to the Re-enactment area - a paddock out in Thowgla district. We get off our bus and try and find Barb and Adrian - we stand for a while infront of the crowd already settled in the area described by Barb as to where they'd be. This becomes too uncomfortable (standing infront of people already seated) so we retreat to the back of the existing crowd - and then see Barb and Adrian seated very close (5m) from where we'd just been standing. Doesn't matter, we couldn't have sat with them anyway with this huge crowd. Rog settles on 1 of our 'short seats' - I stay standing to see. There becomes more crowd behind me - but I just stay standing as they have chosen to sit behind my stand. We've arrived in time to see Rileys Riders Arrive and some of the other pre- entertainment. It is all very well done with the fabulous backdrop of the mountain ranges. When it comes time for the Re-enactment - the weather is being kind and the setting is fantastic. Then to top it off - we get a Re-enactment performance that won't be forgotten - the horses truly do 'break away'. Full credit to all performers - and leading man Guy McLean, they carried on with 'the show must go on' - and many people didn't really realise the 'acting wild' horses had got away. Truly - what a 'nightmare' for the organisers, but I think it all worked out OK 🤞 I just loved it - as it appears no one was hurt (horses not injured 🤞). After this 'officially' finishes - we now have the 'smoozle' of catching a return bus ride. We do catch up with Barb and Adrian, they of course, are in the same boat as us - the waiting game to get a bus ride back. When the first lot of buses arrive for the returners, Roger and I somehow manage to get ourselves on one (just!). We see as we're leaving that Barb and Adrian missed this bus round - oh well, we'll all catch up later.Читать далее

    3rd day MFSRBF Street Parade

    We walk to the main street of Corryong and go to the Market that's being held beside and behind the Visitor Centre. Lovely market, I buy some dog treats and enjoy some gin tasting from Ladbroken Distilling Co from Tumbarumba. Barb and Adrian have messaged they're down the street too, and have got a good spot saved for us to watch the parade from. Roger goes and finds them first, as I'm still happily gin tasting. I catch up, and have a great time watching the parade from the beaut vantage point that Barb and Adrian secured. Wonderful parade - good variety of entries in it. After it finishes Roger and I walk back to the MFSRBF event ground, while Barb and Adrian check out the market. As Rog and I leaving, we come across Lisa who's doing a volunteer shift this morning at the parade - she asks if I've got the opportunity to purchase some horse nutrients for her - while she's working.     3rd day MFSRBF Event Corryong

    Once Rog and I have walked back to the festival ground, we go to where we can get Lisa's bag of horse nutrients - done. Then go and watch some horse events - horse shoeing, pack horse and bareback course. Only caught the last competitor finishing off in the bareback section - I'll have to make sure I see this next time we make it to MFSRBF! Lisa catches up with us and takes her bag of stuff to return to their caravan. I go and watch the whip cracking contests - Roger happier to sit in the shade and watch the mainstage screen - showing stuff happening. After this I go get some lunch - 3 beef dimsims. Then go and get in position to watch the final Trainers Challenge. Roger, Barb and Adrian come and join me. Josh is the winner ($30K) with my favourite piebald paint horse (gelding). After this we all go for a walk to stretch our legs, Barb hasn't had lunch so we go find her something to eat (yummy chicken dimsims). Meet up with Lisa and Tony, we all go and get seating together at RM Williams Arena ready to watch the Rodeo events and evenings presentations. After this, as it's 9pm, Barb and Adrian ready to head back to their camp. Lisa, Tony, Roger and I go and check out what music's happening at main stage - Robbie Mortimer is good - but no chairs available so we're happy to head back to our camps too.     4th day MFSRBF Event Corryong

    We walk to Tony and Lisa's campground and call in -they're just starting their cookup breakfast, so we leave them to it, with the plan to catch up at the RM Williams Arena around midday. Now we continue walking through the event area to go and visit Barb and Adrian at their campsite. We find it no worries from their instructions. Wonderful to checkout Adrian's new ute (Mazda) and new caravan (Avan single axle pop top) - they've got a top set up for their touring. We enjoy a cuppa with them before we head back to the event area - letting Barb and Adrian continue to get organised to come over as well. We'll all meet up for the MFSR Challenge finals.
    Roger and I settle ourselves on the seating at RM Williams Arena in a good viewing spot and make sure we've got enough room for 6 of us. We watch the presentations and see all the competitors lined up in the arena - such a terrific sight. I love how the competitors can back and side step on their horses to 'park' where they need to be between other horses. Barb and Adrian join us first, with Lisa and Tony not far behind. We all settle in and have a good time watching the finals. Soooo much skill going on out in that arena! Once the finals action is finished - there's some entertainment by Lachie Cossor, while event organisers tally up for the Awards Ceremony. Once the Award Ceremony's done - it's all finished. What a great Australian event! It's now around 3pm - so I go and try and grab a late lunch, whoops I left it too late, most vendors are already packed up. I end up with what's left at a souvalaki van - not that flash. I join the others in the bar area. This will be where we'll 'hang out' until our 5.30pm Volunteer BBQ. Barb and Adrian kindly invite us for drinks back at their caravan, but without any of our own drinks to provide, and the fact we'd have to find the energy to return to here, we decide we'll stay put. I must be tired and grumpy - I have a 'dummy spit' at Rog infront of Barb and Adrian - glad Tony and Lisa had ducked off to their camp to miss it! Too trivial to mention what it was about, and we 'let it go' so we could get on with enjoying time with our friends. Before the BBQ gets underway, Barb and Adrian say their goodbyes to us, as they don't feel right to stay with the 'wind up' for organisers and volunteers (hind sight - it wouldn't have mattered). As always with great company - this time with Barb and Adrian has flown by.    Читать далее

    MFSRBF Volunteer Thank you BBQ

    Tony, Lisa, Roger and I enjoy this evening. Same BBQ set up as the 'Welcome' one - so the food is great. As this do progresses, some of the competitors come and join in as well - including the very happy 2025 MFSR Challenge winner. We have a beaut time chatting with folk around the provided fires - and the drinks are 'on the house' as well. Happy days. Well of course reality has to be faced - as we know we've all got to be back here in the morning to do our last volunteer shift (for this year's event). So the 4 of us leave together around 9.30pm to walk back to our camps.Читать далее

    4th MFSRBF Volunteer Shift

    We've quickly got our 'housekeeping' done on our drive to here this morning, so early start for us (shift 9am to 4pm). We can get straight to work as we know we can pack up - what we put out. Roger and I get on with finishing taking down the fairy lights that David and Val were asked to do yesterday, but they were hoping to leave before 4pm - and I came across them in a fluster, and once I realised why - told them to stop, head off and leave Rog and I to make sure it's done (ahha- this was my dummy spit with Rog - when I went back to him and told him what I'd organised for Val and David, Rog said he wouldn't do it). Anyway, was done as I promised. Next we get onto packing up Hessian that we put up (screening), and the banners around the Arenas. Then taking down the greenery (eucalypt branches). Only regret here, is Rog, another volunteer and I went into the Bareback Arena - which we had nothing to do with its setting up - and dismantled and packed up in there. Roger realised later - we weren't meant to do it. We've been busy- so enjoy our smoko break, then later our lunch break - sausage sizzle (snag, bread and sauce) cooked by Warren. In the afternoon, Lisa, Tony and I get the 'doozie' of the job of collecting all the rubbish bins (Roger has gone off with Peter doing other 'stuff'). There was misinterpretation on what we were doing with the bins (we just followed what we were told at the time) and we ended up putting away quite a few loads without being cleaned. So after abit of a 'smoozle' on she said/she said - we finally got doing what made more sense, but still quite a work out handling lots and lots of bins! I jokingly said to Lisa I won't be putting my hand up for this job again - by the time we stopped before 4pm - I think I mean it! Just know it's got to be done. We gathered just before 4pm with the other volunteers still about to have a 'knock off' smoko - and this was when it was put 'out there' about all of us going out for tea together. Wonderful! At end of this shift, Roger and I drive back to our camp.Читать далее

    Corryong MFSR Museum

    Get here early, so we park beside the museum and Roger cleans the solar panels on top of our caravan, while we wait for the 10am open. We are meeting Lisa and Tony here, so we can all enjoy checking out this museum, before we start to travel together for the next few days.
    Terrific museum, and we are glad we took part in the 10.30am tour.
    So much to see here - very well presented. We leave just before noon.
    Lisa and Tony have some grocery shopping to do - so Roger and I park and check out a local art work display while we wait (Roger happier to sit in the park). We all get a snack from the Bakery for a late morning smoko.

    On our drive from Corryong to Jingellic we drive into this lookout bay, with Tony and Lisa following us in so we both park. Have a nice stretch of our legs and walk about to enjoy the river views. The scenery is superb - we all agree it would also be something to see when it is greener (not so dry).Читать далее

    Jingellic Hub Showgrounds NSW

    Get to Jingellic and have a drive about to find where the hotel is, and the free camping nearby beside the river. It is a pretty spot, then we go find the showgrounds where Roger has rung ahead (days ago) to make sure we will be right to camp here. We drive in the wrong gate - and end up on the oval, not where we can camp- so after the caretaker directs us, we go back and enter where required.
    The caretaker shows us where we can camp to access power and water. Tony and Roger sort out how we'll park up our caravans - choose to have our vans with our awnings opened to the same side to enjoy the views (convoy style).
    Once caravans parked, we all get ourselves settled. Awnings and mats out and fire pits assembled to be ready for later.
    Lunch - we all do our own. Roger has a meat and salad sandwich, I finish off the leftover pasta I brought back 'takeaway container' from the pub last night, followed with a banana.
    We relax about camp, I get our budget books and spending app up to date while sitting in our van. The others relax sitting outside. Roger and Tony get our fire pits going and Tony cooks up some damper (using packet scone mix). We eat this with jam and cream (I whip up in the Thermomix).
    Roger cooks up our tea on our fire pit - chicken snitzels, boiled vegetables and jacket roasted potatoes (wrapped in foil cooked in the coals) served with gravy.
    Tony cooks up similar - has chops instead of snitzel. Tidy up, do dishes. Then sit about the fires for a lovely evening. Roger and Tony head off to have their showers before bed, Lisa and I chat on until the fires have died down - right for us to head to our caravans.
    I am writing this before going to bed.
    16/04/25 Wednesday I get up before 7.30am to go for a run. I return around 8.45am, go have a shower, and then have my porridge for breakfast. During this time Roger, Tony and Lisa have been getting themselves organised for us all to go driving together on a day trip. Roger has packed Cheese and vegemite sandwiches, fruit and yoyo biscuits for our (his and mine) lunch. We head off in Tony and Lisa's ute just before 10am.
    We arrive back before 5pm. Fellas get the camp fires going, I make up a batch of date damper in the Thermomix - ready to cook in the camp oven. We all enjoy some pre dinner drinks and playing Exploding Kittens while the damper is cooking. I have luck with the card game - winning both rounds that we played. The damper worked out well - enjoyed with choices from butter, cream, golden syrup and Berry jam. Roger and my tea tonight - savoury mince served on baked potato. Lisa and Tony have some steak and vegetables. Roger has invited our 1 neighbouring camper to join us at our campfire if she feels like it. Sue does, and we have a lovely evening all chatting around the campfire. Sue supplies a nice Berry teacake for our dessert, we have this with cream. Sue goes back to her camp for an early night, Roger and Tony go for their showers, Lisa and I chat at the fire until the coals burn low. Time for us to retire to our caravans...Roger already asleep, so I'm writing this up before I join him.
    17/04/25 Thursday I set my alarm for 7am - not required I'm already awake before this, so I get up and organised to be ready to step out the caravan and meet Lisa at 7.30am for a walk. Roger is now up and moving as I leave and enjoy a 45 minute walk with Lisa about Jingellic. Get back and have my breakfast before heading over to the showground facilities to have my shower. Next, tidy up and get ready to go for another 'day trip' outing with Lisa and Tony in their ute. Roger has lunch packed for us two. We head off around 9.30am - going to Tumbarumba. We return around 4pm. All relax about camp - Roger and Tony get some more wood from nearby paddock and light our firepits. Lisa and I get our drinks organised (gin from today's outing) and we play another couple of games of Exploding Kittens - the 4 of us. Tony makes up another batch of his packet mix scone dough damper, we all enjoy in amongst our game play. Lisa wins the two games. New camp neighbours, Roger and ?? come over for a quick visit, they are from QLD near Roma and they are in this area as they attended the MFSRBF too. Our tea tonight - Rog and I decide we're quite full, so we're happy to go with just trying the roasted chestnuts we got today. Tony and Lisa cook up some marinated chicken and vegetables. After this, we just enjoy sitting around the campfire - and chuckling about the raffle we've entered that is drawn at 8 pm and didn't win (RAM and gooseneck horse float lol), then chatting in general. Roger and Tony head off to have their showers before bed - Lisa and I enjoy the camp fire before heading to our caravans too.
    I'm writing this up while Roger sleeping, then I'll get to bed as well.
    18/04/25 Good Friday I get up 1st at 7am to go for my run - decide to stay out of the traffic and do laps around the showground. When I return to the caravan, Roger is ready to cook up our egg and bacon breakfast that we so enjoy. I get to, and do my part in getting the toast and cold elements ready - note we enjoyed plain goats cheese with it (usually have Meredith marinated goats cheese - but it wasn't available last grocery shop). Next I go and have my shower before helping pack up to move on today. We are parting company with Lisa and Tony - they are leaving here as well and going to Tallangatta Showgrounds for Easter. We've had a great time with them, very easy going camping buddies! We head off just before them at around 9.30am.    Читать далее

    Samuel McPaul Tribute Statue

    As we are driving along the River Road from Jingellic heading for Holbrook, Tony stops here so we can check this out.
    A wonderful dedication to the young man who lost his life while fighting fires - and a lasting reminder of the sacrifices volunteers make for their communities.
    After we finish viewing here, we go back driving until we come across a good spot for the fellas to get some fire wood for our camp fires. This is done nice and efficiently, while Lisa and I enjoy the terrific countryside views.
    Further along on this drive to Holbrook, Tony stops on a bridge so Lisa and I can take photos of the cattle having a drink at the river.    Читать далее

    Arrive and Tony parks us in the main street. We all go for a walk - Lisa and Tony start with the Bakery to get their lunch (not packed like ours) while Roger and I look around. Lovely shops - certainly enjoyed looking in Holbrook Paddock Eggs. Meet up with Lisa and Tony, while checking out this shop - now all go back to the ute to drive to the park where the submarine shell is - so we can eat our lunch.Читать далее

    Holbrook Submarine Museum

    We stop and have our lunch at a picnic table beside the top shell of the Submarine HMAS Otway. A beaut tourist attraction for Holbrook. After we've eaten we go for a walk and climb on top of the Submarine for a look, before walking over to the Tourist Information Centre. This is where the Museum is, we pay our $8 each and go through the Museum - very interesting.

    Bridge Hotel Jingellic NSW

    On today's return to Jingellic we decide to come here for a drink before Tony drives us back to our camp. Roger and I make sure we cover the drinks for Tony and Lisa as they have been lovely taking us driving in their ute. Draughts for the fellas, gingerbeers for Lisa and I. We walk through the pub to look at it from the inside, before taking our drinks outside to the outdoor tables to enjoy the views of the river. After finishing our drinks, we all go for a stroll along the river - very picturesque. Can see why the campground beside the pub is very popular. Next, drive back to our camp.Читать далее

    Tony drives us all to here this morning. We park in the main street and walk to the Visitor Centre. We have a good look in here - plenty to see - and get information as to what we can do while here in this area. Next we walk along the main street - end up getting some top up grocery items from the IGA supermarket.     Ladbroken Distilling Co Tumbarumba

    Drive here to have our lunch and for Lisa and I to do some gin tastings. Have a beaut time here in a lovely setting with good food. We order the same pizzas (each couple) - Maple Bacon with Pear - very tasty, glad we tried something different from the usual pizza flavours.
    After we finish our meal and drinks, we make our purchases (2 bottles of gin and a liquor for me - Lisa 1 gin). Now ready to go for a drive.    Читать далее

    Sculpture Trail at Laurel Hill

    Tony drives us here from Tumbarumba to have a look. This was suggested by the lady at the Visitor Centre.
    We arrive and feel a bit 'underwhelmed' from the description we were given - but on walking about realise that it is a 'work in progress' with new BBQ and toilet facilities. Once the planted trees have established and more features are in place - it will be better.
    Have fun with our walk around.
    Now to drive back to Jingellic to our camp, we stop along the way to get some more campfire wood.    Читать далее

    I enjoy a quick walk about here as Roger has pulled over onto the side of the road so I can get out and take some photos. Was meant to be just of the cod statue in the river beside the bridge - but I couldn't resist walking back abit further to take pics of the pub and surrounds. A lovely spot. When I get back to the ute, Roger has just been waiting patiently - off we go again. The road turns to gravel for a while, and we have to go carefully with the twists and turns on elevations before getting back to bitumen.Читать далее

    Paddys River Falls

    This was a 'workout' for the ute towing the caravan - though Roger had made sure it would be right to bring the van here (coach buses come here, so I'm sure we'll manage). Lucky the carpark area wasn't full so we could manoeuvre with the caravan to be ready to just drive out when we parked. Glad we made the effort to come here - the falls are beautiful. Great to walk about and enjoy. A few families about with the holidays.Читать далее
