  • Acatenango

    October 6, 2022 in Guatemala ⋅ 🌧 17 °C

Hiking on the volcano Acatenango was so far one of the best experiences we had here. We woke up in the morning and hitchhiked to the village Soledad, we waited for Tiffany and Erwan who had some troubles on the way. Around 11:30 we started walking up. Most of the other people was walking with a guide. It was definitely manageable without as the way was very clear.
Around 16 we got to the basecamp where we build our tent. Most of the time it was quite foggy there but as we got up, we got a beautiful view and the Volcan fuego and Aqua and all the villages around.
In the evening we made a "small" hike to the volcan fuego, which was much harder then expected, but we got a beautiful view on the volcano flushing lava every 20 minutes.
In the morning we woke up around 4a.m. to hike up to Acatenango to see the sunrise. Unfortunately we got little bit lost on the way.
When we got up, the view was really amazing.

It was the best way how we could celebrate this days.
We could prepare the oltar "ofrenda" for their daughter who died 3 years ago. We could try many different dishes, dance on the square with costumes, bring part of the meal to other neighbors and family members and in the end have a party on the graveyard.
It's a very nice tradition and it's nice that people remember those who die with a lot of joy and take it as a time reunite with a family and close friends.
