  • Castel Sant'Angelo

    July 2, 2024 in Italy ⋅ 🌙 26 °C

Was originally built as a mausoleum for a Roman emperor but was stripped of all its marble then turned into a fort and then a prison and now a museum. Overall I was not impressed.

This museum was a power plant where they have the old equipment on display plus some other Roman artifacts.
1 and 2. Originally the power plant had two diesel generators that produced 5,500kw of power from each engine for a total power output of 11,000kw
    3. Is one of the connecting rods inside the diesel engine.
    4. Is the alternator connected to the engine that produced electricity.
5 and 6. In 1940 they added a steam turbine that used coal to generate steam and it was rated at 20,000kw. These are pictures of the steam boiler where the steam was produced. This would bring the total power output of the power plant to 31,000kw. A modern nuclear power plant produced 5,000,000kw of power, which is a lot of AC units.
The rest of the pictures are some other stuff in the museum.

    4. A bridge over railway tracks, seemed like it was way more bridge then needed.
    5. This is a drinking fountain where the water runs continuously and they are all over Rome. Apparently the water comes from the same spring the Romans built their aqueducts to and there is more fresh water then they know what to do with.

I feel like the words hiking trails have a different meaning in the Alpes then they do in Austin. The day after I hiked this trail someone was medevacked off the mountain by a helicopter.
To my complete surprise half way up the mountain there was a restaurant. I looked it and it is ran by a hiking club in town. The last two pictures show the restaurant and the cable car they use to move supplies up and down the mountain.Read more
