    Bima fashion

    25 de abril, Indonésia ⋅ ☁️ 29 °C

At my point of the trip, I am nowhere near editing photos from the festival but I thought I would put up what I have. Here is a photo shoot I'd performed for a friend of a friend.

The dress worn is traditional Rimpu displayed for the model competition during the cultural festival. From my experience, I thought it was wonderful to showcase both beauty and cultural heritage at a festival like this.

It is my hope that traditional culture will continue to be celebrated in Bima region. Rimpu designs are found vibrantly throughout the city. I have been grateful to have supported such an event.

    Another day on the road

    8 de maio, Indonésia ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

Coming down the hill from Bajawa to Borong, a vehicle slowed to a stop while I'd been gathering myself on the side of the road for a few minutes.

From the vehicle, three fellas approached asking if they could take some photos with me. I agreed (this being nothing new to me) where we then took a dozen photos between us.

It was in the midst of our conversation that I'd learnt the larger motivation for their approach. One of them mentioned it was his dream to take a photo with a European! This struck me as quite a shock.. I'd never expected the satisfaction of taking a selfie would run so deep to those that I'd agreed to take selfies with.

A conclusion I'd come to earlier in the trip was that for the interest of Indonesians to have photographs with a 'bule' (often me!) is simply for their own entertainment. Us Europeans (considering I am Pakeha at home) tend to represent wealth much larger than their own.

For a relative perspective, the local minimum wage in Indonesia will differ between regions, but is often a monthly salary somewhere above a few million rupees, which would convert to a few hundred dollars from home. Our symbolic nature of wealth I supposed would associate with status which they are then able to post and send across their social media accounts or send to their friends and family. I couldn't believe how wrong I had got this!

We'd continue to exchange a few more words. In return, they taught me a few more words of Bahasa which I'd been meaning to learn. It's funny the things which one might encounter on the road.

Nusa Penida - the final stop

    Ontem, Indonésia ⋅ ⛅ 28 °C

Hopping off the ferry, brakes squeaky and the chain rusty from the endless belts of spray thrown over deck from the ocean's voyage, I carefully carry the precious cargo off the boat onto the island of Nusa Penida. There is a quiet benefit to the misfortune with the bike; the squeakness of my breaks now act as my own personal sound horn as I roll between the large crowds gathered by the wharf.

Nusa Penida, a quaint island off the coast from Bali persists with a low-key hustle, Hindu inspired culture of a developing island. It could may well be reminiscent of what Bali might have been before the insane age of tourism which makes Denpasar much busier than the current island goers prefer. Across the island, there are many beaches, cliffs, resorts and warungs one could consume their time at by choice.

From the morning I woke up today, I set off with no gear on my bike and no shoes to my feet. I don't really know what I was thinking. I wasn't really. I had just started my ride acting out of pure impulse. I took myself over the back hills of the island, through the narrow roads and quaint villages with all their temples. I passed the resturants, villas and roadside shops, barely stopping for any of them.

This might have been just my best day on the bike. I felt free. Freer than I've ever have been at any point of this trip. It was just me and the road stretching before me as continue to plod along.

My main purpose for coming to Nusa Penida is to dive with the Mantas. Nusa Penida has a reputation for seeing Mantas as they are known to be based here this time of year as part of their migration parh.

Tomorrow if the conditions allow, I'll be out on the water in full SCUBA kit surrounded by Manta, at Manta Point. After lunch, I'll bike over to Crystal Bay with my snorkel I'd bought for $200K back on Gili Air to spend the rest of the day doing that. On the next day, I'll take the ferry back to Bali, find myself a bike box and sit down on a plane. Before I know it, this will all be over and I'll find myself back in NZ.

What a trip it's been! I may hope to backdate more of the stories but only if time allows. At the point of which updating the blog of the trip became work, I gave up on the blog and decided to enjoy myself instead. I am in fact on holiday, and I now occasionally consider it worthwhile to show how good of a time I'm having here. But in reality, I'd prefer to tell you all in person instead :)

Anyways, thanks for following! I'll look to put a trip recap together soon. 🤙
