  • Quest For Everest - Day 7

    December 15, 2017 in Nepal ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

Today was a rest day in Dingboche (4410m) although we did a small hike of a 300m elevation and back down to acclimatise.

A couple of guys have come off the diamox which is worrying. They don’t like the side effects of pins and needles and headaches. I take ibuprofen at the same time, not had a headache yet. Tomorrow is a big day so if the guys get I’ll you can’t just get back on the diamox, you have to get lower.

The strangest moment so far is that there is a snooker hall here, actually full size snooker tables 4410 metres high in the Himalayas. A very surreal and special moment I will never forget.

We ventured outside after dinner into -12c to look at the stars, being in the middle of nowhere we are blessed by seeing so many stars and even the Milky Way, a sight I’ll never forget and no doubt never see again in my lifetime.

  • Quest For Everest - Day 8

    December 16, 2017 in Nepal ⋅ ☀️ 8 °C

Early start again. It was a bit warmer last night at -8c. We started a six hour trek to the next destination of Lobouche (4910m) It feels like another planet walking through rocks and small bushes with the odd yak showing it’s face, it’s a very surreal yet stunning experience.

We arrived at our lodge, checked into our room and hiked a little higher to 5000m to over look the Khumbu Glacier, a huge glacier that pushes its way though the valley from Everest.

Tomorrow we wake at 6am for our trek to Everest Base Camp, so close to our ultimate goal now, everyone’s in good spirits, a little tired but all good, oxygen at this height is now 53%, small steps help and we will reach the goal tomorrow!

  • Quest For Everest - Day 9

    December 17, 2017 in Nepal ⋅ ⛅ 5 °C

Well today is Everest Base Camp day, we leave Labouche for a 3 hour trek to Gorak Shep and an incline to 5165 metres. We had a quick lunch and then proceeded to our ultimate goal Everest Base Camp a total elevation of 5365 metres. Will we make it??

It was amazing walking side by side of the Khumbu Glacier a huge mass of ice covered with ice and rocks hearing it creaking and moving and the odd avalanche on the mountain opposite.

I have to say Gorak Shep was the coldest, dirtiest and smelliest place I’ve ever stayed at, all part of he experience I guess but when your peeing five times a night due to the diamox you have to go to toilet with frozen water and piss on the floor, not pleasant!!!

  • Everest Base Camp - Day 9

    December 17, 2017 in Nepal ⋅ ☀️ 16 °C

    We made it!!!!

It was very hard to get here but finally we reached Base Camp at 5365 metres. It actually turned quite emotional for me (and some others) as I sat in the awesome view of the Himalayas thinking about life - I had a little secret cry.

9 days of trekking for 7-9 hours each day had finally come to an end. As I sat there reflecting i was thinking about four long days trekking back down.

I am immensely proud of me and my group we all did amazingly well through colds, headaches and altitude sickness.

  • Quest For Everest - Day 10

    December 18, 2017 in Nepal ⋅ ☀️ 32 °C

Still on a high from reaching base camp yesterday we had breakfast at 7:30am then left on a trek downhill to our lodge at Orsho (4040m), still a hard day though as although we are descending overall there are still plenty of uphill parts and the altitude still gets you.

Our lodge is called the Sunrise Guest House and we are literally in the middle of nowhere. We are the only building here and only our group has occupied it, great atmosphere.

  • Quest For Everest - Days 11, 12 & 13

    December 21, 2017 in Nepal ⋅ ☀️ 32 °C

After leaving Orsho we trekked for another 4 hours to our lodge in Tengboche (3840m), after 30 minutes of trekking I realised I had left my GoPro at the lodge, our leader G went back for it for me and caught up with us later! Whilst in Tengboche we visited the monastery to witness the prayers, however, we all had to take our shoes off and the stentch of our socks just killed the atmosphere!

The day after, we left Tengboche on a 5 hour trek to Monjo (2860m), it’s very noticeable now with the air being now breathable and thicker! half of the group had been struck down with food poisoning, not a great day for those!

Next day we trekked another 4 hours to lukla where we will spend the night and hopefully fly early tomorrow morning.

  • Quest For Everest - Day 14

    December 22, 2017 in Nepal ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

Early morning start today to fly back to Kathmandu. Unfortunately the weather has delayed us a bit so we just sat and waited for a gap in the clouds.

The weather has to be clear at both Lukla and Kathmandu airports and we finally took off a couple of hours after schedule.Read more

  • Back in Kathmandu - Day 14

    December 22, 2017 in Nepal ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

We arrived back in Kathmandu safe and sound. It seems really weird being back into some sort of normality now but it’s a good feeling.

Tonight we headed off for dinner with our guide Lalit and a final farewell to our group. First time having meat after 12 days, was nice!!

Afterwards we went out to party in a place called th maze. Unfortunately one by one our group were getting smaller and smaller and it ended up being just me, James, Charlie, Lachlan and Billy until the early hours. Great night!!

  • Lazy Day!!

    December 23, 2017 in Nepal ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

Another day in Kathmandu today. People from our group were leaving throughout the day so hung around to say goodbye.

There was me, Marnie, Maz, Ben and Jason left that night so we went for some food and a drink afterwards. There would also have been Alan but for some reason he changed his flight and left early without a goodbye, he was ill a bit in the Everest trek and maybe the though of him doing Annapurna was just too much - I wish him well!

At the hotel we befriended an Aussie called Dylan, he will be joining Marnie and Jason on their trek, he joined us for dinner then we went drinking!

We tried a couple of places then saw this one place that looked like a regular bar on the second floor, we went in and walked up stairs to find we were in the middle of a live band playing - it was awesome!!

Many drinks consumed and the odd memory of chanting daal baht made it a night to remember!

  • Chitwan

    December 24, 2017 in Nepal ⋅ 🌧 8 °C

Early start this morning! On my way to Chitwan National Park and the bus journey is around 7 hours!

Very bumpy, noisy and dusty, I was relieved to finally arrive at Chitwan. Immediately I felt relaxed, the weather here is sub tropical so was nice and warm and the sight of elephants just free in the streets was incredible to see.

Although the lodge I booked was cheap, it was very uncomfortable, the ged was pretty much hard like concrete, not sure how long I’ll stay here!

As I had arrived by afternoon I decided to rent the most uncomfortable bike ever and took a ride to the elephant sanctuary. Note sure what I expected really but it was quite underwhelming, many elephant just feeding but it was good to see the baby ones.

That evening I took a trip to the cultural dance hall where the locals show their traditional dance. I was surprised how many were in the audience there but it was a great show, the peacock dance was one to remember.
