The driver took us to the pink lake. it was beside the salt flats. There were large piles of salt, drying. We then visited Dune 7 , which was a very big sand dune.Read more

    February 6, 2024 in Togo ⋅ ☀️ 33 °C

Went on an interesting trip called History and Diversity of the South . First we visited the town of Agbodrafo, situated between the Atlantic Ocean and Lake Togo. Met the Chief . His palace looked like an abandoned building. Then we visited the slave house with a dungeon where the slaves were housed.
Then we drove to Lomnava fishing village . unfortunately the sea was too rough for any fishing. But we visited a local house made of coconut fronds.
We went to Hotel Le Lac for lunch; beer , buffet and creme brulee.
Then we went to Glidj where we saw a voodoo ceremony.
Our final stop was Zangeto village where the locals entertained us with the Night Guardians ritual dance. First the women were singing then several twirling haystacks performed!
We had 3 coaches in convoy with an ambulance a 4x4 and 2 police motorcyclists who stopped the traffic when we joined the main road.

I went on a trip to Kakum National Park. It was a 2.5 hour coach trip. At one stage a police motorcyclist joined us to direct the traffic out of our way. The same thing happened on our way back. Even more dramatic as there was more traffic and a lot of big lorries.
At the National park I went on a hike through the evergreen tropical forest. We then did a canopy walk .
Afterwards we went to a palm oil processing place. it was all done by hand. Finally at about 3.30 we had lunch at the Coconut Grove Beach hotel. We had very loud local drums and music and dancing as entertainment. But it was so loud we couldn't converse.

  • Dakar, Senegal

    February 11, 2024 in Senegal ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

There was some trepidation as there had been riots in Dakar . I went on a city tour with Mike and Gareth. First stop was the cathedral but we couldn't enter as there was a service in progress. Then we went to the Islam centre. Just wandered around outside. Then we had a toilet stop at a bar. Mike fell over the uneven ground and badly cut his forehead. He had to go back to the ship to get stitches in his head.
The trip continued to The African Renaissance Monument. It is the tallest statue in the world. There are 206 steps to reach it and it weighs 7000 tons
Then we went to the Art village . All the installations are made from recycled materials. Finally we went to a market which had some good things. I bought a bus, bracelets and a fridge magnet

  • Santa Cruz Tenerife

    February 14, 2024 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

Went ashore with Jill. There was a big carnival for a week in Santa Cruz. It was the festival of the sardines with a big parade in the evening. So there were a lot of fast food and fairground stalls in the streets. We found the tourist office in a lovely old building. We headed off to the Carnival museum. on the way we visited the African market . lots of jewellery stalls and food outlets. I bought some earrings. Eventually we found the museum. It shows the history of the carnival and there are lots of replicas of costumes.
Then we went to the Palmerium. a nice walk along the front past an enormous swimming complex. The botanical gardens were very good . lots of trees from all over the world and it is built on a reclaimed rubbish tip.
We then went for a beer at the cafe in the impressive concert hall.
Jill went to see the sardines parade but I didn't feel up to it. So I went to see the Eukele band, 4 lads from Liverpool with some interesting instruments, and then had dinner with John and Marilyn.
Went to the deck party but didn't see the fireworks as they didn't happen until 1.30.

    February 16, 2024 in Portugal ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

Our last port was Funchal. I arranged to go out with Marilyn, Viv and Julie. We got a taxi and went to ride the wicker baskets first. Great fun, very slippery road. Then we went to the botanical gardens.
Next we went to the Valley of Nuns, which is an extinct volcano. The Nuns used to go there to escape the pirates. They had to walk up the valley to get there. Until recently the village was cut off from the rest of the island so there was a lot of intermarrying . First we went up to the view point above the valley and then down into the village.
The taxi dropped us back to Funchal and we visited the market. We walked back up the main shopping street, stopping at a lovely Cuban bar for a beer. We went into the Chinese shop Marlyns name for a shop that sells everything, lots of bargains. I bought a skirt and top.
on our way back to the ship we found Louise Jane and Katherine sampling the local rum. made from sugar cane, so we joined them for a puncha,
got back on ship for sail away . Had Aperol Spritz on back deck with Jill, Annette and David.
Brad joined our table for dinner. Then he did a sixties night; Hollies, Trogs, Gerry and the Pacemakers, Kinks
