We're Home!

Our day began with a yummy breakfast with Charlie and Joanna at Memos in West Springfield as well as with a text message from our good friend Alan inviting us to their annual Labor Day lobster bake....a reminder that summer is coming to an end. I guess we really have been gone most of the summer. Hard to believe as it has gone by so quickly.
After 7 weeks exactly, we're back home. As we pulled into our driveway this afternoon, our trip officially ended with our good friends Randy and Margaret waiting to welcome us home. It was the perfect surprise and the perfect end to a wonderful trip.Read more

Back in New England

We continued to put in long travel days as we work to make Saturday our day of arrival back home to Newport.So far, so good.....right on schedule. On Thursday the 10th we were west of Chicago and we were able to make it to western New York that night. We stayed at a small campground, nothing more that a site really, but it was fine to cook our last dinner on this trip. We left early on Friday morning, stopping in Albany at the RV store and then we cut across to Agawam, Massachusetts to see our good friends Charlie and Joanna. We had such a nice visit and dinner with them...another example of how we used this trip to connect with family and good friends whenever possible. Final leg home tomorrow...mixed blessing as this trip has surpassed all our expectations leaving us with lots of pictures and memories that we will cherish forever.Read more

Continuing towards home....

Today, for the first time all summer, we woke up to a heavy rain so I guess it was a good day to travel. Fortunately within 2 hours we drove out of it and though cloudy, the day was fine. We were a little amazed with the amount of road construction going on in Minnesota along I90. We had a surprise road sign pop up today as well. Of course I had to slow down for a picture. As we left Minnesota we also crossed the Mississippi and are officially in the east. It was kinda sad meaning vacation is almost over. We ended our day just west of Chicago. Still on track to arrive back in Vermont on Saturday.Read more

Day 45
Time to head home....

We have officially started home now with longer travel days and shorter stops along the way. Our first stop was to see the wood carvings done by a chainsaw carver in Keystone, SD. He was a very talented guy with beautiful carvings that we wished we could have afforded. Next stop was at Wall Drugstore in Wall, South Dakota. Though we were advised to keep driving, we had to see it at least once. The hundreds of billboards we similar to Pedro's South of the Border signs on the east coast. Interesting store but we can continue driving next time. The same was true with our next stop in Mitchell, South Dakota at the Corn Palace. We're seen it once and that's enough. It had many huge pictures all made out of corn cobs... over 275,000 to be exact. Not a stop we'll need to make again but interesting. We ended our day stopping for the night in Sioux Falls, SD. They have done a nice job with their Park along the falls. The falls were small in comparison to the beautiful ones we saw in Oregon but obviously a token of pride for the people of Sioux Falls.Read more

There are motorcycles literally everywhere you go here in the Black Hills of South Dakota. Things take a little longer which we are use to with the visitation rates being high this time of year. We visited the Crazy Horse Monument that is still under construction. I'm not sure we'll live long enough to see it's completion but we got some nice pictures of their dream. Next we continued to Custer State Park which was like a miniature Yellowstone. Along with more buffalo we also saw cute burros that are descendants of those that were let loose many years ago when they stopped using them. Our campground here is huge with lots of activities for all ages. There is lots to see her in this area of our country.....we need to come back.Read more

Motorcycles and more motorcycles

We arrived in South Dakota today along with thousands of Harley Davidsons on their way to Sturgis. Since it was on our way, we stopped to see all the excitement. The amount of motorcycles was unbelievable! They were everywhere. We continued on to our campground and then decided to go to Mt. Rushmore at night to see the monument lit up. There was a ceremony and movie prior to the lighting that was very well done. At the end all military men/women, past and present were invited to the stage to be honored and to take down and fold the flag. You could hear a pin drop amongst the crowd of people. It was very moving and ranks up there with the ceremony at the changing of the guards at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldiers.Read more

Ron and Karen's (Helena, Montana)

This morning Ron brought Robert to see his slider truck in action and then we went to say hi to Travis H. He and his finance have a beautiful setting just outside of Helena that they are working hard to make into their own. Then it was time to say good bye to Ron and Karen as we left to continue our journey. We had a great visit and it was so nice to see them. About an hour east of Helena, Robert had an enormous cinnamon roll from the Montana Wheat Bakery in Three Forks that Ronald told him he had to experience before leaving Montana.....it was truly an experience. The roll was huge. We continued eastward and did a brief exploration of Bozeman, Montana for Meghan and Randy. We really liked it and think they will as well. We decided that Billings, Montana would be our destination for tonight so that we can make it easily to Grand Rapids, South Dakota in the morning. We had a nice dinner at the Olive Garden (thank you to the Larsen Family for the gift certificate) and then decided Walmart was easier than finding a campground. Believe it or not, at 9:00 pm we are one of 20 RV/campers in the parking lot.Read more

Day 41
Lewis and Clark Taverns (Montana)

While Karen and Ron were at work, we went to the Lewis and Clark Caverns in one of Montana's state parks near Willow Creek, Montana, about 1 1/2 hours from Helena. According to our tour guide we were officially "spelunking".....exploring a cave. This was a first for both of us and we thoroughly enjoyed the new experience. The cave is lined with many different stalactites, stalagmites, columns and helicites. The caverns were carved from the Madison Limestone Formation which was a rock layer that formed over 350 million years ago. It was very impressive and our pictures don't do it justice. Thank you Karen and Ron for recommending such a fun place to explore.Read more

West Yellowstone and on to Montana

After leaving Yellowstone National Park, we stopped outside the west entrance in West Yellowstone, Montana at the Grizzly and Wolf Discovery Center. All of the animals had been rescued for various reasons. We especially enjoyed watching the grizzly's search for food that was hidden in their habitat. It was amazing how fast one could climb a tree to get a bird feeder. After our visit at the center, we had a another beautiful, scenic drive to Ron and Karen's in Helena, Montana.Read more

Day 39
Exploring Yellowstone

Another day at Yellowstone but we spent the majority of the day seeing the abundance of hot springs and geysers around the Old Faithful area. We enjoyed seeing the eruption of this famous geyser twice as well as the boardwalk that brought us around to other smaller geysers. After Old Faithful we continued along the bottom driving route of the park. We had a cookout in a picnic area and then as evening set in, we went on our drive to see more wildlife. Once again we saw elks and lots of bison, many of which were in the road causing quite the traffic jam. Robert also was able to see a wolf in the lens of a spotting scope belonging to the man standing next to us. Very impressive. We have now been to most of the areas in the park that are highlighted in the visitors guide and will be ready to head for Helena, Montana tomorrow to visit Ron and Karen Pare.Read more
