    Jason and Alison were going to take us someplace else for dinner, but it was closed for a private event. This is a neighborhood place they have been to a few times before. Fresh handmade pasta, really really good. Tim had an octopus appetizer that was amazing. For dessert, some kind of deep fried doughnut dipped in Nutella. I couldn't have a lot of that, but everyone else died over it.En savoir plus

    Bainbridge Island Brewing Co

    I really like to go directly to the tasting rooms of all these breweries, rather than ordering their beers in other restaurants and taprooms. BIB doesn't disappoint--it's got a big garage door on one side that was open this afternoon in the nice weather. Beers are solid if not mind-blowing. We didn't do a flight because we had tried some of their beers the night before at a different place; instead we tried a couple of IPAs.En savoir plus

    Oh Ivar's. We used to come here all the time when I was a kid, get fried clams and chips and feed the seagulls. Tonight we dined in the more upscale restaurant, but we ate clams and chips anyway. They were as good as I remembered. This is one of those places where you know you're in a tourist trap, but you don't really care. We got a table right by the window and watched the ferries come in and out while we ate.En savoir plus

    Bloedel Reserve

    We walked the 2-mile trail through fields, forests, flowers, and of course, slugs. Even my mom, who does NOT hike, was able to traverse the whole thing pretty handily. It's pretty peaceful here, and it would be nice to come regularly if you lived close by. There's a pretty steep admission fee though, so maybe you wouldn't. Definitely worth it for the experience today, especially since it got my mom out into nature in a way that worked for her.En savoir plus

    Harbor Public House

    There's always a wait for this restaurant, which I figured was because it's on the water and has outdoor seating. But it turns out the food is pretty good too. Most of it is NW pub fare--fish and chips, that kind of thing. But everything is prepared really well, and they have some good local beers on tap. They also use an app called NoWait that tells you how long the wait for a table is at that moment, and lets you "get in line" before you actually get to the restaurant.     Chihuly Museum and Garden

    My mom loves Chihuly glass, and this is a really nice exhibit, especially on a sunny day. There are galleries inside too, each one more spectacular than the last. We didn't do the free added audio tour (available as an app on your phone), but read the signs and did our own speculating as to how in the hell one ships all those glass pieces all over Washington and the world. The glass pieces in the garden competed with carefully chosen and arranged flower beds. So many colors! If you're in Seattle and you appreciate glass art, this exhibit is worth the admission price.En savoir plus

    After too many meals of fried fish and oysters and clams, it was time for something different: sushi! This small, unassuming Japanese restaurant is AWESOME. It might not be the most traditional, but they have dozens of inventive sushi rolls that are so good! The prices are a little steep compared to Tucson, but the rolls are also a bit more generous. We didn't try any of the non-sushi dishes, but there were lots and they looked good too. Maybe next time.En savoir plus

    Close Trail

    I found this trail on my All trails app (it's actually referred to as Gazzam Lake Loop) , and was expecting it to be an easy walk in the woods. In fact, I had picked out another easy loop to do afterwards if we felt like we needed more. But this was so awesome! We followed the main trail out and back, maybe 4 miles total, with a couple of spur trails and loops out to Gazzam Lake, which is really more of a marshy pond. One of the lookout spots had a bench where we sat for a while and admired the reeds and ducks. When we got back to the start we decided to take a side trail that the map showed went out to the coast. It dropped down and down right to the water, where there was a little beach spot. Spectacular view, and the Lady Washington was sailing by (that's the ship they used in Pirates of the Caribbean) so we stuck around a while and put our feet in the Sound. If I were staying longer I'd come back to this area to run. Such a great hike--we ended up enjoying this trail for about 3 hours.En savoir plus

    Ale House on Winslow

    I'm sorry it took us until our last day here to finally get to the Ale House, but we had a lot to do. Right at the entrance to the ferry dock, the only thing better than the ambiance is the peoplewatching. Good selection of beers on Tap and in bottles, lots of local stuff. They don't serve food, but I bet they make a killing on the tourists who come over to the Island for the day. Today was sunny and hot, and the place was really busy. Loved it here!En savoir plus

    Sawatdy Thai Cuisine

    We asked our new friends at swim practice where the hot place for dinner on the Island is right now, and this is what we got. It's in the most unattractive roadside strip of businesses imaginable, but the food is outstanding. Huge menu with tons of authentic Thai dishes, great service, I can't recommend it enough.En savoir plus

    Seapine Brewing

    We had to drop my mom off at Seatac and then drive to Edmonds, so I Yelped the breweries that might be convenient to our journey. The Flying Lion didn't open until 2pm, so I chose Seapine for its good reviews and proximity to our northbound route. We win! We sampled a few 5oz beers and had a "Seattle Dog" from the food cart outside. Seapine's look isn't anything special--industrial chic--but the walls and the bathroom feature interesting old Seattle photos and newspaper clippings. The bartender was super friendly and gave us some other recommendations in the area.En savoir plus

    Bottleworks

    The bartender at Seapine recommended this place near Greenlake. It's got a bar, but it's mainly a bottleshop--and a pretty amazing one at that. Tim was in heaven, but amazingly didn't spend hundreds of dollars on beer. Probably because we have to fly home. We sampled a couple of beers, including one of the best sour beers I've had yet (see untapped for details on that). This place was a little grungy (water spots on the ceiling and such), but is so clearly a labor of love that it really doesn't matter.En savoir plus

    Tim's aunt and uncle suggested this place for dinner, mainly to show off the Edmonds waterfront. We got a table outside, and while the lowering sun was a little strong, we decided the view made up for any discomfort. I ordered a seafood salad which was topped with crabmeat and shrimp. And there were vegetables involved, which were really welcome. Travel-eating is hard, especially when you're embarking on the second week of it.En savoir plus

    Brackett's Landing

    After dinner we walked along the Edmonds waterfront. So beautiful! There were lots of people enjoying the perfect weather and the strip of beach next to the ferry landing. There's an "underwater Scuba park" here, which is really interesting. Apparently so many divers got into trouble exploring here that they sunk some boats and connected everything with guidelines. If I thought I could handle the water temp (48-52 degrees at the surface, surely colder down below), I would love to dive here. But I imagine I would freeze to death in like 5 minutes.En savoir plus

    Tim's aunt and uncle seem to have figured out that we can't get enough of dynamic, waterfront views, so this morning we drove to Everett for another Sound-side meal. Anthony's is a chain I know well, since my mom is obsessed with the one in Seattle, but their food really is good. Even at 10:30 we were somehow there before the crowds, and once again got a great table outside. We watched boats come and go while we enjoyed our food. I had a salmon cake with hollandaise over eggs and toast--maybe something simpler would have been better, but it's hard not to order seafood at every opportunity.En savoir plus

    Mukilteo Landing

    There sure are a lot of waterfronts around here. But although most other things on earth bore me after a brief time, I feel like I could stare out over water with boats floating on it for hours on end. The perfect weather had hundreds of people frolicking around on the beach, and at least another few dozen playing Pokémon Go instead of enjoying the damn outdoors. There's a lighthouse here you can go up in--it's not used for real anymore, but it was for a long time. There's also a museum and of course a gift shop. I think being a lighthouse keeper would be pretty freaking cool.En savoir plus
