    End of the epic trip

    The end point of Route 66 is Santa Monica pier.
    The flat tyre meant we did not make it on the bikes - however an Uber ride took us to the pier this morning for the customary photo next to the end sign.

    Then off to the airport for the flight home.

    Ride into Los Angeles - part two

    October 5 in the United States ⋅ 🌙 21 °C

    We left the hotel in Victorville after breakfast when the tow truck plus broken Road King eventually arrived.

    It was 11am before we finally arrived at the Harley-Davidson dealer in Victorville to have a new rear tyre fitted.

    Eventually we left the dealer just after 3pm - the time we should have returned the bikes in L.A.!

    Phone calls backwards & forwards and we eventually arranged that the L.A. drop off point was open until 6pm, which gave us enough time to get to L.A.

    After negotiating the 8 lane freeways into L.A in rush hour traffic (lucky it was Saturday), we dropped off the bikes at the Eagle Rider depot.

    On hearing our story of being left sitting in the Mojave desert for 6 hours, the whiskey was broken out and free transport to our hotel provided.

    Ride into Los Angeles - but not just yet

    October 4 in the United States ⋅ 🌙 20 °C

    We left Barstow for a nice easy ride into Los Angeles, via Apple Valley & Big Bear Lake.

    However a flat tyre on the Road King soon put a stop to that plan.

    It took six hours before Harley-Davidson rescue service finally arrived and now the bike is in an overnight storage lock up in Victorville, with a tyre replacement scheduled for tomorrow morning.

    As the bikes are due back in Los Angeles at 3pm tomorrow, we have no idea if we will have time to complete the trip.

    Ride to Barstow in California state

    October 3 in the United States ⋅ 🌙 22 °C

    Today we left Arizona and rode into California, through Oatman and across the Golden Valley.
    We found a boat marina in Topock, on the Colorado river, for a lunch stop and enjoyed watching the birds raiding the sugar packets on the tables. The antics of the waitress trying to stop them stealing food was fun to watch.

    The Grand Canyon

    October 1 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

    A wonderful day touring the Grand Canyon, after leaving Tusayan.
    Overnight stop in Williams Arizona.

    Ride into Arizona

    September 30 in the United States ⋅ 🌙 13 °C

    Today we ride towards the Grand Canyon in Arizona, in windy conditions, stopping to admire the Petrified Forest.
    The trip takes us through native Indian reservations.
    Overnight stop in Tusayan, very close to the Grand Canyon.

    Deeper into New Mexico

    September 28 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

    We left Santa Rosa after breakfast, heading towards Santa Fe, the capital city of New Mexico.

    As we rode the scenery become more and more spectacular, with the air temperature dropping as we climbed. At one point we were 7000 feet above sea level admiring the epic vistas.

    We reached Santa Fe and rode through the town, but decided to carry on, as the traffic was busy and the roads small. The perfect riding conditions meant we could catch up most of the time we lost due to the storm, back in Joliet.

    We rode the Turquoise Trail, through tiny old mining towns and hamlets.

    After a magnificent ride we stopped at a motel in Albuquerque for the night.

  • Day16

    Ride to New Mexico

    September 27 in the United States ⋅ 🌙 26 °C

    First stop this morning was the Cadillac Ranch, where cars are dug into the earth as an artwork and comment on today’s society.

    We also passed the physical half way point of our journey, just before crossing the Texas border into New Mexico.
    As we rode, we could see the rocks slowly becoming more red, with yet more turkey vultures in the sky above us.

    We stopped for the night in Santa Rosa NM.
