  • Niagara Falls Campground

    14. juni 2024, Forenede Stater ⋅ ☀️ 77 °F

We're absolutely enjoying our campsite at HTR Campground on Grand Island, NY! It's incredibly spacious with lush green surroundings. Plus, it's just minutes away from Niagara Falls!

We took a quick bike ride around the grounds to explore. There's a small lake with a beach for swimming and kayaking, zip lines, a pool, and an area for fun activities like putt putt golf and corn hole.

We had a bit of excitement when we returned to our site. Don almost ran over a bird and its nest in the neighboring site! 😱 Shortly after, another camper arrived, and Don kindly helped them relocate the nest. Despite our efforts to guide the mother bird to the new location, I don't think she ever found it. She kept flying and walking around the camper where her nest used to be, eyeing Don suspiciously. It was like she was auditioning for a role in Angry Birds! 😂

  • Travel Day Selfie & Roadside Wonders

    14. juni 2024, Forenede Stater ⋅ ☀️ 75 °F

Another travel day and guess what? Jack is on a group selfie strike! Beth tried every trick in the book, but he was a master of disguise, hiding his face behind the armchair like he was a celebrity avoiding paparazzi. Next time, Jack, next time! We’ve got plenty of travel days ahead to turn you into our instagram star!

Today’s adventure took us from Ohio towards Niagara Falls, with a scenic drive through the northern edge of Pennsylvania. Beth, ever the vigilant road tripper, managed to snap the elusive “Welcome to Pennsylvania” sign and the “Welcome to New York” sign! Major victory there—cue the happy dance! 🎉🕺💃

Making our way across the northern tip of Pennsylvania, we spotted what looked like a trucker convoy heading west. Where are they off to? A trucker convention? A secret trucker rave? The mysteries of the road!

And just before hitting the New York border, we stumbled upon a massive field of grapes. Hellooo, future wine tastings! 🍷😂 I hear New York is famous for its wines – can’t wait to find out if that’s true!

We’ve got a thing for capturing quirky signs we don’t see out west. Today’s gem? A rest area dedicated to…texting! Yup, you read that right. No bathrooms, just a place to text. Priorities, people!

And then, an overpass that left us scratching our heads. Seriously, did they run out of money halfway through construction? Or is this some modern art installation? Either way, we’re baffled. 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♂️

Stay tuned for more travel shenanigans!

  • Brandywine Falls & Stanford Trails

    13. juni 2024, Forenede Stater ⋅ ☀️ 86 °F

This afternoon's adventure to the Brandywine Falls Trailhead was a real-life comedy sketch! At the Visitor Center yesterday, the Ranger gave us the lowdown: the main road was closed, but she had a "foolproof" detour for us. We followed the directions and detour signs religiously, yet still found ourselves completely lost. How did we finally get there? By driving straight down the road boldly marked with "Road Closed" signs. Clearly, we're rebels without a cause.

We barely had to hike to see the falls, as the boardwalk to them was conveniently right there, just steps from the parking lot. But, being the intrepid adventurers we are, we wanted more than just a pretty view. So, we decided to hike the Brandywine Gorge Loop and the Stanford Trail, which takes you to the historic Stanford House.

The Brandywine Gorge Loop is a delightful trek that dips into the gorge, crosses a footbridge over the creek, and then climbs back up the other side. Along the way, there were plenty of spots where we could walk down to the creek and cool off. We took one of these offshoots to snap some pictures, which is when the real comedy began.

Beth decided to move from a rock in the creek to a log hanging over the water. Don captured this moment on video, and it’s pure comedy gold. Imagine Beth butt-scooting to a twig for leverage, trying to stand up on the log, failing hilariously, and then hopping to another log to reach dry land without getting soaked. It was like watching a live-action cartoon. Amazingly, she stayed dry!

The rest of our hike to the Stanford House was fairly uneventful, except for one thrilling moment—a snake sighting! Well, if you can call it a snake. It was about the size of an overgrown earthworm, but hey, it slithered, so it counts. Make sure to check out the video for a peek of that tiny creature!

All in all, our hike was part adventure, part comedy show. Stay tuned for more episodes of our wild misadventures!

  • Ledges Trail in Cuyahoga Valley NP

    13. juni 2024, Forenede Stater ⋅ ☀️ 81 °F

Today, we decided our butts deserved a break, so we tackled the park both by car and on foot! 🚗👣 First stop: Ledges Trailhead! You’d think with a name like that, there’d be waterfalls galore, but nope, not a drop in sight. Just rock on rock action.

These epic rock ledges create a plateau at a high point in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park uplands, and the trailhead is right at the top. And let me tell you, everything we read and heard about this being the #1 trail? Totally true! Beth was like a kid in a candy store, leaping, hopping, and skipping across every rock, boulder, and pebble like some kind of nature ninja. 😂🤣😂

On a serious note, these spectacular ledges offer breathtaking views of the highly textured Sharon Conglomerate, formed from sand and quartz pebbles brought here by ancient streams. Yes, we read the brochure.

Even though Ice Box Cave was locked up tighter than a drum (hence the bars), we had a blast climbing stairs, weaving through crevices, and snapping selfies at every possible angle! 📸 Because if you didn’t take a hundred photos, did you even hike?

  • Towpath Trail in Cuyahoga Valley NP

    12. juni 2024, Forenede Stater ⋅ ☀️ 84 °F

We arrived early at the KOA in Streetsboro, OH! Now we have plenty of time for a bike ride on the Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail—a scenic 101-mile route stretching north and south through the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. Starting at the Boston Mill Visitor Center, we pedaled all the way to the Ira Trailhead, a solid 16 miles round trip. Not bad for a couple of pedal-pushing adventurers looking to get lost…

The Boston Mill Visitor Center, nestled in the heart of the park, is in the village of Boston, established in the early 1800s.

As we cycled along the trail, we passed several dried-up canal locks that once helped boats navigate the 395-foot elevation change between Lake Erie and Akron’s summit. Back in the day, mules trudged alongside the canal, towing boats behind them. Then the railroad arrived in the 1880s and the mules had to retire—probably off to a well-deserved pasture somewhere. It was great to see so many of the old locks still in place, albeit very weathered.

Ohio had a beaver-free century until the 1970s, when these industrious critters made a comeback. A former auto salvage yard was flooded and transformed into Beaver Marsh, now a bustling habitat for beavers, great blue herons, and otters. Talk about an extreme makeover: wildlife edition!

At our halfway point, we stopped at Szalay’s Farm & Market for a refreshing slushie. Don went for red, while Beth opted for blue. The result? Don’s tongue looked like he’d been licking a fire engine, and Beth’s like she’d made out with a Smurf. Quite the colorful duo!

We thoroughly enjoyed our ride, soaking in both the history of the area and the beauty of the park. Until next time, happy trails!

Time to roll on with our summer adventure! Goodbye, Blue Canoe RV Resort—you were amazing, and we'll miss you dearly. Beth is on a mission to get Jack into our selfies—half success so far! Jack’s not thrilled, but he’s hanging in there like a champ. Honestly, he looks like he's auditioning for the role of "Person Most Likely to Call This Vacation a Hostage Situation." 😂

As we bid adieu to Pennsylvania and head toward Ohio, we cross the majestic Allegheny River via I-76. Feast your eyes on that train trestle and the tops of the trees on Allegheny Islands State Park below. Quite the view, right?

Oh look, it’s Dave & Liz’s exit! Sadly, they're off gallivanting somewhere out west. We’ll have to catch them next time! Cue the sad trombone. 🎺

Look another stunning river view—this time, it’s the Beaver River from I-76. We’re really nailing this river-spotting thing.

Hello, Ohio! Not much further to go for today, but first, behold the mighty toll station on the Ohio Turnpike! It’s so big, it probably has its own zip code!

  • Pittsburg, PA

    11. juni 2024, Forenede Stater ⋅ ☀️ 68 °F

Our epic adventure took us to Pittsburgh, PA today. First stop: Primanti Bros Bar & Grill, where we ordered a sandwich so legendary, it should come with its own theme music. This sandwich was massive—like, "could double as a doorstop" massive. And surprise! The fries weren't on the side; they were right there in the sandwich, like they missed the memo on side dishes.

Post-lunch, we sauntered around Market Square and then made our way to Point State Park. We strolled along the Monongahela and Allegheny Rivers, where these two water buddies merge to birth the Ohio River. Feeling adventurous, we crossed the Roberto Clemente Bridge to ogle PNC Park up close, then took the scenic route back over the Seventh Street Bridge, admiring the riverfront artwork like true cultured tourists.

To dodge rush hour traffic, we decided to kill some time and hop on the light rail to the Duquesne Incline. Except... the light rail doesn’t actually go there. After scrutinizing the public transport info (maybe a bit late), we realized we needed a bus. Cue the comedy of errors! We debated the correct direction like it was a life-or-death situation, and finally, Beth relented and followed Don. Spoiler alert: we were on the wrong side. We crossed the street to find ourselves next to a soup kitchen, blending in perfectly with our tourist brochures and smartphones.

Our public transport misadventures peaked when a stranger engaged us in a conversation made entirely of random words. That was our cue to abandon public transportation and drive straight to the Incline. Thankfully, our light rail tickets were also valid for the Incline, so at least our detour wasn't a total bust. Adventure: 1, Us: 0, but it was a blast anyway!

  • Roadside Wonders …

    10. juni 2024, Forenede Stater ⋅ ☀️ 61 °F

Another wine tasting adventure!!! This time, we hit up Christian Klay Winery in Chalk Hill, PA. Unfortunately, the only pictures we managed to snap were of the building—clearly, we were too busy enjoying the wine! And enjoy it we did, so much so that we bought a bottle and paired it with a delicious charcuterie board. The hosts were awesome—super welcoming with great conversation. Fun fact: they’re a “Harvest Host” with a decent-sized lot if you want to crash overnight in your RV.

Navigating through the backroads of all these adorable little towns, Beth couldn’t help but notice the tiny post offices. The one in Chalk Hill, PA, might just be the smallest we’ve ever seen!

"Dangerous Mountain Ahead,” “Trucks Speed 10” and “Use Reduced Gear” were all new road signs for us. We’ve got mountains out west, but these signs? Totally a first!

On one of our backroad detours, we spotted a sign for "LP Storage Buildings." Naturally, we had to turn around and check it out. We thought it might be an Amish operation because of the buggies out front. Turns out, the Amish are crafting the storage sheds using LP’s products and selling them through this husband-wife business.

And finally, the pièce de résistance: the bird that landed on Don’s shoe! Beth swears, this little guy had a crush on Don—he showed up every time Don sat outside! 😂🤣😂

Our route also took us through town, where we paused for a quick snack before continuing our adventure, because even nature lovers need a little sustenance!Læs mere

  • Wine Tasting and Dinner

    9. juni 2024, Forenede Stater ⋅ ☀️ 68 °F

🍷🍇 At the end of the day, we made a quick pit stop at Glades Pike Winery for a tasting before dinner. We swirled, sipped, and pretended to know what "hints of oak" meant. We had no clue, but maybe that’s because only one wine was actually “oaky!” Guess we're just better at finding "hints of grape." 😜🍷

Dinner at Out of the Fire Cafe started off with a bang! Our appetizer, Local Putnam Farms Grilled Asparagus, was so good it nearly made us switch to a veggie-only diet. (Don’t worry, that wild idea lasted about five minutes.) 🌱😋

Beth had the Chargrilled Jail Island Salmon while Don munched on the Australian Wagyu Double Smash Burger. These were also delicious, but the asparagus was the award winner for the night! Who knew asparagus could outshine Wagyu beef?

We uncorked a bottle of “Crooked Path” from Paso Robles to wash our food down. It was so perfect with our meal that we briefly considered renaming ourselves the Crooked Path Wine Fan Club. 🍷👏

Dessert was a flourless chocolate cake with strawberry drizzle that was just the right size to share. By "share," I mean we each took tiny bites while secretly planning how to claim the last piece. 🍫🍓😆

An evening filled with delicious food, fun moments, and wine-induced wisdom. Here's to our next adventure—may our wine be less oaky and our asparagus always be this amazing! 🍷✨

  • Flight 93 Memorial & Tower of Voices

    9. juni 2024, Forenede Stater ⋅ ☁️ 66 °F

Visiting the Flight 93 National Memorial and the Tower of Voices is a profoundly moving experience. These sites honor the 40 passengers and crew of United Airlines Flight 93, who heroically fought hijackers on September 11, 2001.

The Memorial Plaza at the crash site features a Wall of Names engraved with those who sacrificed their lives. The design allows for reflection and contemplation. Walking the path to the crash site, visitors feel the weight of history. The Visitor Center offers detailed exhibits about 9/11, the story of Flight 93, and the broader impact on American and global history. However, the emotional gravity of the site can sometimes make it difficult to absorb all the information presented. The stories of the passengers and crew, their final phone calls, and the realization of their fate are heart-wrenching.

The design of the Tower of Voices is both aesthetically impressive and deeply symbolic. As you stand beneath the tower and listen to the chimes, you are enveloped by a sense of presence and remembrance. The serene sound of the chimes offers a moment of reflection, allowing visitors to connect with the memory of those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

At times, our emotions were overwhelming, and Beth found herself unable to read all the information displayed. Tears blurred her vision as we stood in awe of the courage exhibited by those on Flight 93. Their story is one of heroism and selflessness, a reminder of the resilience and strength of the human spirit in the face of unimaginable adversity.

Visiting these memorials is not just an act of remembrance but also a commitment to honor the legacy of those who perished. It is a place to pay respect, to grieve, and to find inspiration in the courage and unity demonstrated on that fateful day.

  • The Great Allegheny Passage

    8. juni 2024, Forenede Stater ⋅ ☁️ 72 °F

Today was a wild ride! Don clocked 48 miles, Beth not far behind at 46! GAP, aka Great Allegheny Passage, here we come!

Don suggests Ohio Pyle, a mere 20 miles away. Easy, right? Wrong! We start off in the wrong direction, adding 5 bonus miles thanks to Don's navigational skills (or lack thereof).

But what a ride it turned out to be! Along the Youghiogheny River, passing mini waterfalls, charming parks and crossing bridges. Finally, Ohio Pyle—a victory halfway point!

A break for refreshments is a must, especially for Beth's sore "arse"! But on the return, a restroom stop leads to a comical chase as Don zooms past Beth, oblivious.

And the highlight? Running over a snake! Don unknowingly leads the charge, Beth following suit with a chorus of screams and foot-lifting acrobatics. Classic!

Back safe and sound, but Beth's legs? Mush. Still, a record-breaking ride for both of us! 🚲😳

We just hit the jackpot in the camping world! Our new digs were upgraded to a primo view of the river, and bonus: no RVs blocking our scenery! Plus, we've got prime access to The Great Allegheny Passage (gaptrail.org) – it practically runs through our resort! It's like having a nature highway in our backyard.

And let me tell you, this place is so clean, it’s like they hired obsessive-compulsive elves as staff. They zip around in golf carts, collecting trash like it's a high-speed scavenger hunt.

But wait, there's more! They've got pools for both kids and adults—complete with a water slide because why should kids have all the fun? And if you're into bingo or just feeling lucky, they've got an activities center that’s basically the hotspot for all things fun.

And get this, they've got a concierge service you can text for food from the restaurant or any other whim you might have. But today, Don's got a different kind of whim – he's considering texting them for driving lessons! Because, uh, let's just say he gave our Jeep a taste of the high life when he decided to go off-roading over the median to get to the store. Talk about living life on the edge! 🚗💨

We made it!! The road trip perfectly captured the essence of West Virginia—from the heart-pounding climb to check in at the Days Inn to the rollercoaster plunge down to the campsite! Shockingly, the campground is almost deserted (maybe the snake is running a solo retreat?), but it does have a MASSIVE amphitheater that feels like it’s waiting for a surprise concert.

While biking around, we found another part with a gentle incline followed by a thrillingly steep, short downhill ride! It was like finding a hidden theme park in the hills. The views from the top were stunning—rolling green hills as far as the eye could see.

  • Hello Ray & Nancy!!!

    5. juni 2024, Forenede Stater ⋅ ☀️ 75 °F

Met up with our RP pickleball pals, Nancy and Ray, this morning for a couple of games. The weather forecast looked friendly enough, so we made our way to Kirklevington Park in Lexington, KY. However, lo and behold, Mother Nature had other plans. As soon as we stepped onto the court, it started to drizzle, and the pickleballers scattered like they were made of sugar. We managed to score a few points before we were unceremoniously chased off by the rain. Not ones to be deterred, we decided to keep the game alive and headed over to the Christian Church off Tates Creek Road to play indoors. Spoiler alert: we closed the place down like it was last call at a dive bar! Oh, and for the second time on our adventures, we had a Bob Pom sighting! This guy is like Bigfoot but with better hair. 😝

Still buzzing from our indoor pickleball triumph, we set our sights on the Kentucky Horse Park to tackle the Legacy Trail on our bikes. Everything was going smoothly until Nancy’s bike decided it was time for a siesta. 😳 Battery charged, but no juice. With Nancy heading back to the car for some serious bike therapy, the rest of us soldiered on. At mile 5, the heavens opened up and dumped a bucket of rain on us. Thank goodness for that bridge we took refuge under, huddled together like a bunch of wet cats for a good 15-20 minutes.

Soaked to the bone (except for Nancy, our dry little diva), we were starving. We made a beeline for Tres Hermanos Nunez Mexican Restaurant for some "lunner" (yes, that's a thing now! 😂🤣😂). They serve the best Coconut Margaritas on the planet—Beth swears by them and hasn’t found anything close anywhere else. Cheers to soggy adventures and legendary lunner! 🥥🧉🥥🍻

  • Nashville Adventures … It’s a wrap!

    1.–3. jun. 2024, Forenede Stater ⋅ ☀️ 66 °F

It’s a wrap! We squeezed every last drop of fun out of Nashville—food, pickleball, and game nights galore!

Saturday: Retrieved Jack the Cat from Jake’s – big shout-out to Jake for cat-sitting while we jaunted off to FL! Dinner from Chef’s Market (the German Chocolate Cake was dangerously delicious), then off to the Stilwells for game night! We introduced them to “Play 9” and had an absolute blast.

Sunday: Packed to the brim! Brunch and pickleball (not in that order) with the Stilwells at Snooze in Nashville. OMG 😱, it was mouthwateringly 😋 good! Highly recommend. Great to see Stephanie Lane, Beth’s pickleball guru & mentor. She’s looking fab post-knee surgery during a surprise visit with Darolyn’s dinner drop-off. Back at the Praskachs, Doug out did himself, starting off with pineapple and mango salsa, followed by Jamaican jerk chicken, Caribbean corn and black bean salad, and coconut cornbread (a meal we won't forget anytime soon)! It was great to see Davis and Reece, who joined us for dinner, but we definitely missed Delaney 😢! Game night was a hoot, starting with learning "Priorities" and moving on to teaching "Play 9."

Monday: Beth hit Fairvue for one last epic pickleball showdown with the girls! The heat almost got them as Beth and Darolyn battled Lisa and Natalie to a thrilling 12-10 finish! Thanks to Darolyn, Catherine, Tamara, Natalie, Lisa, Ellie, and Jana for an unforgettable time! Bonus: A group of Beth’s former students showed up just as she was leaving! So wonderful to see Kathy, Terry, Margy, Tan ya, Pam, Carolyn, Deanna, and Carmen still rocking the courts! ❤️💕❤️. And finally, the night was capped off with dinner at Texas Roadhouse and game night with our awesome son, Jake — with Beth clinching the win in Play 9! 😂🤣😂
