    K'gari (Fraser) Island

    April 7, 2022 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

We have had to ditch the van for a few nights to come across to K'gari, also known as Fraser Island. The largest sand Island in the world, the entire island at 123km long and 22km wide is completely made of sand, including all the roads, so only 4WD vehicles are allowed to enter. Guess we'll have to sleep in real beds for a few nights 🤷‍♂️

The island is a geological marvel, with the sands moved up from the artic over millions of years and deposited on the spot of a large natural mineral water spring. As mineral water is lighter than salt water it creates a water table that is just above sea level and permeates all through the sand. As the water is very rich in nutrients it can sustain plants which usually require a lot of water and has allowed the creation of micro climates of Rainforest plants and fauna in an area that doesn't get much yearly rainfall. Very surreal to see the rainforest plants and trees without the humidity. We took a stroll down a Valley to admire some of their unique plants and birds.

The island is also home to the longest recognised beach road on the stunning 75 mile beach. Who can guess how long the road is?😄 We took a guided tour to see a section of it that has the Eli Creek and the Maheno ship wreck. We went inland to see the incredibly blue waters of the McKenzie lake, again full of natural minerals, it is apparently fantastic for your skin and hair. We are definitely glowing, but that could be because we spent all day in the sun 🥵

Wild Dingos also call K'gari home and with around 250 it is quite rare to see them, although they are attracted to the smell of bacon. Luckily for us one of the campsites we passed was grilling away so we got to see these dog like creatures in the wild.
