  • Castel Sant'Angelo and the Pantheon

    We were wandering through Rome and we saw this incredible castle across the river, so we decided to check it out and it was incredible! It was a Renaissance castle built on top of an old Roman ruin. The view from the top was incredible, we could see out over heaps of Rome. We also went inside the Pantheon and the roof and paintings were amazing.Read more

  • Emperors and Gladiators

    We did a walking tour through the Roman Forum and the Colosseum!! Anch's childhood dream of visiting the Colosseum came true. It was incredible to see the ruins of the Forum including Caesar's Temple and the House of the Ten Virgins, and it was even more incredible to walk around the Colosseum and see the magnificent arches and the walls in the basement. After our tour, we did a pasta making class where we ate our creations afterwards (they were delicious).Read more

  • Florence!

    We walked around Florence for a while and saw the sights. Lots of gorgeous palazzos and of course, cathedrals. We didn't see the real David but we saw lots of other statues.

  • Opera di Santa Maria del Fiore

    We climbed Giotto's Bell Tower (414 steps) and Brunelleschi's Dome (463 steps) for a total of 877 steps. The views from the top were breathtaking and absolutely worth the climb. The paintings inside the dome were also incredible. We were on top of the dome at 7pm when the bell rang which was pretty cool to hear.Read more

  • Switzerland

    We visited the Jungfrau mountain in the Swiss Alps! We saw snow in the middle of European summer and finally were at a reasonable temperature. At the top of the mountain, we saw some cool ice sculptures and went to the highest Lindt chocolate shop in the world. Anch did a 90meter high canyon swing which included a very high free fall (😧) and we carried on the Contiki tradition of taking some scandalous photos! For dinner we had an all you can eat cheese fondue.Read more

  • Geneva

    A stop in Geneva on our way to France, we had lunch and a walk around. It was so pretty with lots of nice statues and fountains and flowers, plus we saw some cool birds. Jack also got a chocolate mouse which was very tasty. We also saw a paddle boarder attempting to paddle into the fountain and promptly get arrested by the boat police 😂Read more

  • Chateau de Cruix

    Our first taste of France!! We went for a swim in the amazing pool, did a wine tasting and had a 3 course meal for dinner! Baked camembert for the first course, chicken and roast vegetables for the second course and creme brulee for dessert. After dinner we had a party with another Contiki tour where we all had to dress up as something beginning with the letter P. Jack went as a pirate and Anch went as Pippi Longstocking.Read more

  • Paris!

    We arrived this evening in the City of Love! We went for a stroll through a lovely park near our accommodation where we saw lots of dogs and geese. It was a beautiful little spot to hang out with gorgeous flowers and trees everywhere, a nice contrast to the concrete jungle of the rest of Paris.Read more

  • Eiffel Tower!

    We went all the way up to the tippy top of the Eiffel Tower! A dizzying height of 280meters above the ground on the top floor! The view of Paris was incredible, we could see everything including all the Olympic event locations. We each had a very tasty macaron from the café on the second floor while admiring the view.Read more

  • Arc de Triomphe

    We also went up L'arc de Triomphe! It was incredible seeing all the statues and inscriptions in person, as well as the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier & Eternal Flame. Seeing such an important symbol of French history was amazing. Watching the chaos of the roundabout was also very funny!Read more

    A collection of historical bits and bobs we found fascinating, including a bronze rat playing a trumpet from Ancient Greece, several intricate plates/dishes from various places and a Viking figurehead from a ship.Read more

    We saw lots of mummies and artifacts from Ancient Egypt, some of the human remains were over 5500 years old! It was very cool to see how the Egyptians preserved their dead.

  • Ancient Jewellery

    The museum had a vast collection of jewelery from many ancient civilizations. Jewelery was used to show social status, as currency and often buried with the dead to aid them in the afterlife.

    We went for a walk around some of the famous landmarks of London. We saw Big Ben, Buckingham Palace and the Camden Markets which were all very cool. It was a nice way to finish our time on holiday.

    Farewell London, we absolutely loved our trip and we are sad that it's coming to an end, but at the same time we miss the comforts of home and it will be nice to return. See you soon New Zealand!

    We are home at last - minus our luggage! An uneventful trip right up until the last flight where the airline leaves half the plane's luggage sitting on the tarmac in Melbourne! We hopefully should be able to collect our bags from the airport tomorrow.
    A big thank you to all our family members who have been following our trip and supporting us, we missed you while we were away and we are glad to be home. We have had a really awesome holiday and we are looking forward to planning our next one!
