Lucky to be able to leave

    March 22 in Sri Lanka ⋅ ☀️ 31 °C

For today, my day of departure, I had to arrange a rather expensive taxi for a 2 1/2 hour ride along the express way back to the airport. 12000LRK or 60€, which would have been in normal times half the price or just 2€ for a train ticket back to Colombo.

Well, looking at the departure monitor I can probably be happy to be able to leave at all and not be stuck at the airport.

    Curfew: Unawatuna beach

    March 20 in Sri Lanka ⋅ ☀️ 30 °C

Today and tomorrow I planned to take a Padi Advanced open water course to get the certificate for dives down to 30meters, where at the moment I am only allowed to dive down to 18 meters.

So I booked myself in, had the first two out of five doves on Friday. And upon my return to the beach for lunch we got told that the Sri Lankan government issued a carfew for the weekend. And only for the weekend...

Even though the virus shouldn't be able to follow us under water, the diving school had to close and for me two days of literally doing nothing but hanging around and eating started.

Fortunately tourists were at least allowed to stay at the beach and in the ocean. Together with a couple of restaurants which provided quiet good and a big variety of food this was then a more quiet holiday ending than expected.

    Sea face villas Unawatuna

    March 19 in Sri Lanka ⋅ ⛅ 31 °C

After a taxi drive of about 4 hours I arrived at my next stay for this vacation: The town of Unwatuna where I booked myself a room a little up the hill and away from the noise of the coastal road.

Funny fact of this place was the rock in the bathroom, which continued outside and where the house was just built around since the builders didn't want to break it down. So now it is part of the house.

    Hike up Little Adams peak

    March 18 in Sri Lanka ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

Took me about an hour from the Nine Arches bridge and I got a total sun burn, but it has been worth it see the views and be there.

There would also have been a hike up Ella rock, which is the big hill just opposite the valley, but I think Little Adams peak was already pretty scenic.Read more

Over train tracks to Nine Arches bridge

    March 18 in Sri Lanka ⋅ ⛅ 28 °C

From my new guest house host I got the advise to walk along the train tracks which were running along just a few meters below to the nine arches bridge which is one the main attractions here in the area.

And even beyond he draw with pen and paper a little nap for me which illustrated how the track would be. After the bridge I could make a little hike uphill to the little Adams peek which provides great view over the valley a further countryside.

Ella town and The View hotel

    March 17 in Sri Lanka ⋅ 🌧 19 °C

During my train trip I got told my my hotel for the next two nights that they could only facilitate one night due to Corona virus restrictions from the local authorities. To bad, since the hotel was really great.

Fortunately the restrictions only applied to bigger hotels but not for smaller guest houses so I could book myself a place for the second night easily.

    Sigiriya views from the top

    March 16 in Sri Lanka ⋅ ☁️ 30 °C

I was in doubt after being on the Pidurangala rock before it would be worth it to climb up Sigiriya as well but after landing on the last step, taking a breath and looking around the massive ruins and views to all side it was just great!Read more

    Sigiriya park and ascend

    March 16 in Sri Lanka ⋅ ☁️ 31 °C

With an entry ticket fee of 30USD this attraction was pretty expensive for Sei Lankan relations. But hey? It is the place to be and thanks to Corona again I was alone where normally thousands of people are crowding around.

Starting with the massive Park area which surrounds the rock and taking a lot of steps up a lot of stairs I made my way up to the top slowly but surely. So exciting!

    Pidurangala rock

    March 16 in Sri Lanka ⋅ ☁️ 32 °C

Before I got to the Sigiriya rock, which is THE tourist attraction of Sri Lanka, I asked my driver first to bring me to a little bit smaller rock nearby which I have read of and you could get a pretty good view towards the Sigiriya.

And indeed: After a ascent of about 20-30 minutes O have pretty much alone on top of the rock, thanks to Corona virus! It has been super hot and sunny but the views were worth it. Simply stunning...
