  • Photographer Jam

    September 3 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 50 °F

It’s one thing to hit the slow spots when wildlife is around….its another to leave your truck in the middle of the road and completely block traffic.

  • Denali Spirits

    September 3 in the United States ⋅ 🌧 57 °F

We stopped part way back to Anchorage to try the rye in the most beautiful Denali bottle. We wound up meeting a guy who lived in Austin for 5 years and two women who just moved to Santa Fe. Small world!

We also had some good spirits and a great pizza with elk sausage.

Also a funny Thai restaurant in this town mid 970 people.

These are the experiences we love.

  • Glacier Brewhouse

    September 3 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 63 °F

We thought this would be a casual little place….oh no! It is a bustling restaurant that happens to brew beer….not a craft brew place.

Food was great, Russian waiter was typically cold (has taken a while to get used to how many Russians are here….just so out of our realm), beer was good.

They also clearly cater to the cruise folks….ours was listed among many others.

  • Trolly tour

    September 4 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 59 °F

We went back and forth and decided to take the trolley tour. So glad we did. Our guide, John, was both really informative and funny. We learned a lot.

  • Ship creek

    September 4 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 59 °F

First stop on the trip was at Shop Creek where we could see people fishing and learned that during the season you can get 3 fish per day and a lot of Alaskans do that and stick their freezer for winter.Read more

  • Moose gooser

    September 4 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 59 °F

The purpose of this little engine is just to push moose off the tracks. So it is referred to as the Moose Gooser.

We also learned that people can register to be on a list for when moose are hit by a car. You have 1.5 hours to get there and get the moose or you are removed from the list forever. They refer to that meat as pre-tenderized meat.Read more

  • Captain Cook

    September 4 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 59 °F

Captain Cook is really important to Alaska and the maps he made of this area were used for two centuries.

The Air Force base is nearby and we saw a couple fighter jets coming in. Apparently Russia has been sending their planes and China has too into the area more often so we have to show our strength too.Read more

  • Planes and pilot shacks.

    September 4 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 59 °F

There are 1000 planes making the lakes near the Anchorage airport the largest float plane hub in the world. One in 24 people in Alaska has a pilots license and you can get one at 14 and fly alone at 17. A whole different world here.

The pilot shacks here are the Alaska equivalent of the man cave.

We all know there are many more men than women in Alaska but I live this quote for women seeking a man here…..the odds are good, but the goods are odd!

  • Alaska Public Lands

    September 4 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 59 °F

Really informative (and free) space. After hearing so much about the 1964 earthquake, I had hoped for more photos and information. But it was still great.

  • Salmon Hatchery

    September 4 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 59 °F

This was fascinating! After eating a lot of salmon in this trip and hearing so much about fishing, this was a great way to learn more about the whole system. This is a really big working hatchery that stocks fish all over Alaska but they created a really great educational museum too.Read more

  • Ulu Knife Factory

    September 4 in the United States ⋅ 🌧 61 °F

We have been seeing these knives and had to get to the factory. Interesting combo of factory and store. These knives have been in this area 3000 years.

Of course we bought one….:most likely to display rather than use.Read more

  • Anchorage Brewing Company

    September 4 in the United States ⋅ 🌧 61 °F

A 15 minute Uber ride to this brewery that turned out to be cool but very small given the name.

In Austin we miss out on a lot of darker beers because of the heat, so we were looking forward to some ….but haven’t found as many as we thought. The IPA fever exists even here!

Great wood fired chicken sandwich to share tho!

  • Whisky & Ramen

    September 4 in the United States ⋅ 🌧 57 °F

We don’t remember where we heard about this place but it was wonderful. Unique design and amazing food on a rainy night.

We had the bao buns, octopus dumplings, and two different ramens that were both great.Read more

  • Karaoke this is what to do in the rain

    September 4 in the United States ⋅ 🌧 55 °F

It was too early to go back to our hotel so we stopped in this place where the locals hang out. Turns out it was karaoke night. So much fun.

Also had a sad time with a drunk young woman who told me her dad has pancreatic cancer and is going to Vermont to take his life through assisted suicide. She was really a mess about it. I tried comforting her and my heart was breaking for her as she tried to understand it.Read more

  • Pel’Meni!!!!

    September 5 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 57 °F

Pel’Meni! I’ve made them once and really wanted to try them from in a real Russian fashion. Juneau had a restaurant but we were too full from our amazing dinner at In Bocca al Lupo to try them. Fortunately Anchorage has this place.

They serve beef or potato and assorted toppings. That is it! I had mine with everything - butter, hot sauce, sour cream, cilantro, and curry. Bill just had butter, hot sauce and sour cream. Delicious!

We had an amazing dinner at Whisky & Ramen last night and I think Bill is insulted I got so excited about this. lol.
