    Teslin, YT

    14 de junio de 2024, Canadá ⋅ ☁️ 61 °F

Interesting day. It was raining when we went to sleep. We discovered that the connector to our camper battery had been crushed in transit over yesterday's rough roads. See photo. It is fine. We have headlamps and can charge and run everything without it, but super annoying as now we'll have to get it fixed somewhere. We hope we can find a place in Whitehorse, YT, tomorrow. I could probably do it myself with the parts and a YouTube video if needed, but I hope it doesn't come to that since our cell and wifi coverage is very limited. There was no phone for a couple of days and some wifi tonight and earlier today.

We woke up early and since it was raining, we just got up and left at 6:45 am. We ate a pop tart and some trail mix for breakfast. It snowed on us for about 40 miles and was 33 F. We were watching for the Caribou again, but only saw some snowshoe hares and a porcupine that had been hit by a car. We stopped at Jade City, which was the first "town" for 70 miles. They had free coffee flush toilets and wifi, so hallelujah! I was so grateful that I bought a T-shirt. We chatted for 20 minutes with the woman salesperson. She told us a large percent of the world's jade comes from Canada. There was an artisan working with Jade and many beautiful things for sale, but I am not a nic-nac person, but I will wear the T-shirt.

After 140 miles, our road joined the Alaska Highway (Alcan). In the meantime, we drove through about 30 miles of completely burned forests(probably the smoke we experienced last year). It looked like a nuclear wasteland. Very sad as trees, lakes, and various ecosystems were completely destroyed.

The Cassiar Highway was narrow and rough, but the Alcan was wide and relatively smooth. We fueled up and got more coffee at the junction, and then it literally felt we were flying at 60 mph after 30-50 mph all morning.

Tonight, we are in Teslin at an RV park. Great showers and laundry. I rehydrated some chicken and noodles for supper. It has been raining on and off and is supposed to rain overnight. We've met people in giant campers worth more than a home, and tonight, our neighbors are tent campers on their way to Fairbanks to see a daughter who got an internship at a National Park.

Hope to get the camper fixed tomorrow and spend some more nights in Canada before we enter Alaska on Sunday.

    Teslin again

    22 de julio de 2024, Canadá ⋅ 🌩️ 72 °F

We were in Teslin last on June 14 on our way north. It's hard to believe that was 5 weeks ago.

Our departure from Skagway was delayed as I washed our bedding in the reasonably priced laundromat. It was $2.50 per wash and $1.25 for a dry in the extra large tumble dryers. We've paid as much as twice that to wash a load 4 times that for dryers.

The drive was pleasant, and we stopped for a picnic lunch at a rest area. When we arrived, we fueled up and selected our site. It seemed familiar because for the first time this trip it really was!

After setting up, we visited the local grocery store. Sadly, there continue to be grocery supply issues, especially for these small First Nation's communities. (Teslin is the largest First Nation's community in Yukon.) There was no yogurt and only limited fruits and veggies. We bought 4 bananas and a tray of butter tarts (kind of like little 2-bite pecan pies without pecans).

Back at camp, we spoke with a couple returning from family "fish camp." They live in Whitehorse. Fish camp is a tradition especially among native families in this part of Canada and also in parts of Alaska where there are salmon runs. The wife's family had a fish camp near the community of Telegraph. She said they stayed for 5 net pulls, and her 7 year old daughter stayed with grandparents for another week. You put the net in the deep water and then check it after a certain number of hours. In the first net pull, there were 70 salmon! The family group cleans all the fish. Some is smoked, and some is frozen. Later, the family will bring salmon up to Whitehorse for this couple. The couple were admiring our little camper, and they had their youngest daughter with them who was perhaps 3 years old.

As we went our separate ways, the child asked me, "Can I have one of your snacks?" I offered her a bag of Nacho Cheese Doritos, and she said, "Can I have a banana instead?" Such a wise child. I am sure as a kid, the Doritos would have been my choice! She happily went off with a banana.

No firepits here, so I fixed a brocoli salad (from a kit) and a kind of tuna helper with a bag of cheesy Knorr noodles, a can of tuna and a box of shelf stable milk. We must have been hungry as there were no leftovers!

Tomorrow we are headed for Watson Lake. It is supposed to be raining, but I will try to take more photos.

    Teslin and the Yukon Territory

    4 de junio de 2024, Canadá ⋅ ☁️ 54 °F

We are in the Yukon territory and driving through the mountains and lakes and rivers. We have seen so much wildlife, tons of bears, bison,a golden eagle, and a porcupine… stopped at an RV park (gasp) for a much needed shower as our water pump broke on day one and we have skipped one to many showers. Be glad pictures are not smelly! lol 🤪 Also check out the time stamp on the map! The sun doesn’t set until almost midnight! Crazy stuff!Leer más

    Whitehorse via Carcross

    4 de julio de 2019, Canadá ⋅ ⛅ 68 °F

Started our day at the Tlingit Heritage center, and boy are we glad we did! They served (free!) Bannock and coffee, with smoked whitefish. The bannock are literally fried dough, similar to fry bread, but shaped more like a pop-over. The were hit out of that vat of oil they are fried in....add a little butter and jam, yum! And the a bit of smoked whitefish, freshly caught and made from the day before. And COFFEE!
We watched a video presentation about their annual cultural celebration and looked around the gallery. They also had carving demo by a gentleman related to George Johnston (the museum we saw the day before) and we saw the fishing demo and smoking area. Very interesting and nicely presented!
Drove on to Carcross for lunch. (Stopped in Johnson Crossing because we heard they had cinnamon rolls!) We had been to Carcross before with the cruise. This is a day excursion for many Inland passage cruises. Passengers catch the train in Skagway, and it brings you out to this town in the Yukon. Kind of two aspects to this town, the old homes and a couple of buildings; (very early 1900s) or the "commons" which are all new shops developed together so you can do alot of shopping! All in walking distance...we had a great lunch, bison burger and beer, walked a little with Auggie, visited the Carcross desert and Emerald lake overlook; and headed on!
Oh almost forgot, BEAR sighting on the way to Whitehorse! Just walked across the road... I was so panicked to get a photo I hit the button that reverses the lens and was taking a picture of myself! Collected my wits and still (with Auggie in my lap barking wildly) managed to get a photo!
Checked into Whitehorse, went to the drug store for Benadryl (i had a bite that resulted in my eyelid swelling, I really do struggle with mosquitos...), went to the liquor store for some wine, and grocery store for more food! You can only buy wine in separate liscensed stores so a little inconvenient. And a lot more expensive, at least the wine is! So been drinking more sparkling water....simple salad with chicken and we called it a day!

    Toad River

    13 de mayo de 2015, Canadá ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

We found a great little camp ground for tonight. It was just what our family needed. We spent time together hiking around, watching beaver, cooking dinner and watching the sunset. Keith and I stayed up to see the northern lights. We saw a bit around 11:20. At midnight the sun had not yet set.Leer más

    Kein Strom in Teslin
