    London Calling!

    Yesterday in England ⋅ ☀️ 18 °C

    We have arrived!
After circling Heathrow a few times to find the hire car return…it’s all worth it when you hear the screech of the train 🚆 arriving at the station and that so familiar & longed for smell of the diesel of the Underground.

After a folly through the many levels of Harrods where Mark did his biggest purchases to date we headed to Westminster Station and took that obligatory Exit 4: Ah! There she was: The Elizabeth Tower. As soon as I see Big Ben it feels like ‘home’. Photos from all angles and a walk down past Parliament to Trafalgar Square and Embankment sealed the deal.

Had a couple of drinks at Retro Bar then decided to head back to the hotel to freshen up before heading out again to get late dinner. The hotel for tonight is W14 in West Kensington: very basic & lugging heavy bags up 3 levels is definitely not something I’d recommend. It is what it is! Focus on the good 😊

I’m back in London and that’s all that matters to me now, and, with only a week to enjoy… you can bet I’ll do the best I can! 🙏

It was lovely to catch up with Marta tonight. We met at the front of the Empire Cinema where we worked together almost 30 years ago now… Found somewhere to eat and Marta surprised both of us with some lovely gifts: Biscotti from Burano and a very special new knitted Queen Elizabeth & Prince Phillip ❤️🤍💙

Now Midnight 🕛 Exhausted 😴 but content 🇬🇧

    888

    April 19 in England ⋅ ⛅ 46 °F

I dropped off Kim, Deb, and Nikki at the airport before 6am this morning. They are continuing on to Northern Ireland, and I’m headed home. I only made one wrong turn without an additional navigator but got the rental car returned. The car rental guy inspected the left side of the car very closely, including the hubcaps and tires. Luckily, I haven’t hit a curb since the second day, and I managed to return it without any dents or scratches. After looking at the mileage, he found it auspicious that I had driven exactly 888 miles in two weeks. I don’t know that I’m lucky, but I am exhausted from having to pay close attention for 888 miles.

Once I was approved to leave the rental return, I caught the tram out to the airport and flew to London. I took a bus from the airport to the underground. It was nice not to be driving, so I could enjoy the scenery. We drove by “Jack the Chipper” and I was sad that I didn’t know about that restaurant until now. While I waited for the subway, a group of about 10 young men, mid-twenties, walked up to the platform. They were fully decked out in Harry Potter outfits. Each one was a different character, with wigs and garb to perfection. There was even a Hermione with skirt, wig, and nicely trimmed beard. He looked happy to have drawn that straw. My favorite, though, was Dobby. The guy was bald and had huge ears glued to his head. At first I thought it might be a tour, but it wasn’t a tour vibe. I wanted to ask if there was a party at Hogwarts, but they didn’t make eye contact. I hope they enjoyed their Saturday night and wherever they were going.

I rolled in to my hotel at Heathrow around 7pm. Unbelievably, it took me about as long to get from Edinburgh to here as my flight home tomorrow. I spent the evening packing and prepping for the long trip home.

    Travel day to London

    April 14 in England ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

Today I traveled to London to start the second leg of the Europe tour.

My flight was in the early afternoon, so I left around 9:30 by train to Schiphol. Luckily, I got to see Michael, who came back late last night from a bachelor weekend. We managed to spend at least one evening together before I head off for another two weeks.

The train was super crowded, and I tried wearing my compression socks for my foot injury — but sadly, they just made the pain worse.

At the airport, everything went pretty smoothly thanks to my flight status. Since I was flying to the UK, I had to go through the passport check side. I grabbed a really nice asparagus pasta in the lounge before boarding.

The flight to London was short — just about an hour. We had a bit of a delay disembarking, though, because someone got arrested on the plane.

I took the metro to Brixton and checked into the hotel, where I bumped into Maria. We made dinner plans for around six. I headed out to find some new underwear at M&S, but ended up shopping at TK Maxx instead (classic).

Maria and I had dinner at a lovely ramen place. We got into one of our deep, interesting conversations — like we often do — and it felt so good to be on the same wavelength tonight. Afterwards, we ended up in M&S Foodhall buying cake and cookies. We said our goodbyes and both took cozy solo baths in our rooms. I squeezed in a bit of rehearsal time and called Michael before heading to bed.

    Tardis 💙

    April 14 in England ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

    Heading home

    March 23 in England ⋅ 🌧 55 °F

We stayed at a Stuttgart Airport Hotel so we could have a stress free travel morning on Sunday. We returned the rental car Saturday night. The drive from Munich to Stuttgart had some drama because there was a huge accident on A8 - the Autobahn road we should have taken all the way to the airport.
We opted for the re-route ,but it took us on some back roads... again. This time, however, it was already dark- which led to some extra challenges. One road was so narrow, we knew there was not enough room for 2 cars to pass. Just as we said that, a big truck came through. It was by God's mercy that we were not side-swiped because on the right-hand side of the road, there was fencing and curbing, and the left -hand had the large truck!
I should also note that the Friday before we left, Heathrow Airport experienced an electrical fire that shut down the entire airport. Our flights are on schedule today, but there are a lot of people in the airport because their flights have been rescheduled.

    More family & London 🎡

    March 1 in England ⋅ ☀️ 48 °F

The remainder of our time included more family visits. We saw my grandad, who I hadn’t seen since 2019. We visited my aunt and cousin, who is becoming a young adult quicker than I’d like! We got to watch Henry’s stepbrother play in his school orchestra. Henry’s dad was having a knee replacement surgery, so Henry was able to help transport him. I visited with a friend who I’ve known since I was a baby; it’s always the best time catching up.

I also made a trip up to London, to be in the city and see a few people. One of our new friends from our Philippines boat trip kindly gave me a free facial at the fancy spa where she works— it was such a treat. I had a wonderful day wandering around, doing some rare shopping, and enjoying the sunshine in one of my favorites cities. I met a former coworker for dinner and heard about her transition back to living in the UK.

The two weeks ended up being much busier than expected, the downsides being that both Henry and I weren’t feeling 100% most of the time, and that we didn’t get as much planning done for our upcoming South American portion as we hoped. But it was very much needed to see all our people and we’re glad we came.

    Our plane

    December 23, 2024 in England ⋅ ☁️ 41 °F

... but we're not on it. Delayed out of Dublin, and missed an already tight connection. It was closed by the time we got through the flight connections center. We're rebooked onto a flight in about 4 hours.

Trystan had his pudding checked again, and James his spork. Removing any last second chance of catching the first flight. Really hoping this Christmas Pudding tastes good 😂

They're clearly on the watchout for weaponized Christmas Puddings this year.

    First things first: United Kingdom

    December 10, 2024 in England ⋅ ☁️ 7 °C

Ein guter Anfang für die Fortsetzung des "good to know with Sarah".
Freut Ihr euch genauso darauf wie ich mich freue??? 🤓
