    London Calling!

    We have arrived!
    After circling Heathrow a few times to find the hire car return…it’s all worth it when you hear the screech of the train 🚆 arriving at the station and that so familiar & longed for smell of the diesel of the Underground.

    After a folly through the many levels of Harrods where Mark did his biggest purchases to date we headed to Westminster Station and took that obligatory Exit 4: Ah! There she was: The Elizabeth Tower. As soon as I see Big Ben it feels like ‘home’. Photos from all angles and a walk down past Parliament to Trafalgar Square and Embankment sealed the deal.

    Had a couple of drinks at Retro Bar then decided to head back to the hotel to freshen up before heading out again to get late dinner. The hotel for tonight is W14 in West Kensington: very basic & lugging heavy bags up 3 levels is definitely not something I’d recommend. It is what it is! Focus on the good 😊

    I’m back in London and that’s all that matters to me now, and, with only a week to enjoy… you can bet I’ll do the best I can! 🙏

    It was lovely to catch up with Marta tonight. We met at the front of the Empire Cinema where we worked together almost 30 years ago now… Found somewhere to eat and Marta surprised both of us with some lovely gifts: Biscotti from Burano and a very special new knitted Queen Elizabeth & Prince Phillip ❤️🤍💙

    Day 7–8

    London (Leg 1)

    April 30 in England ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

    Our first leg of the trip in England was in London. London was so warm! We went to Kensington gardens and Kensington Palace. There were so many cute swans and birds, and Diana's gardens were especially pretty. We then rented a bike and biked to Buckingham Palace and Hyde Park. We made our way through St James Park and got ice cream! Then we walked back to Leicester Square and Trafalgar Square, where we went to visit the M&M store (home of the Maggie-Mae) the night before. There was a protest for May Day happening in Trafalgar Square where we saw a marching band playing which was very fun! On our way to the train station, we crossed the water and saw Big Ben and the London Eye.Read more

    Kensington Palace & Home for the week!

    Yesterday in England ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

    This morning we went to Kensington Palace to the Dress Codes exhibition.
    Wills & Kate and the kids were, unfortunately, not available to take tea 🫖 but Kate made a reservation for us at her favourite place: The Veranda at The Goring Hotel tomorrow! 😉

    You can see from the pictures that we saw Elizabeth and Margaret’s’ matching dresses they wore after VE day was announced. We saw dresses from Princess Diana as well as Princess Margaret and Queen Victoria. Apparently Old Victoria was a trend setter! Who’d have thought Black was the 1880’s ‘in thing’ ✊🏻 It was okay but not patch on the Diana dresses’ 👗 exhibition that I saw a few years back. We also did the tour of the rest of the Palace as well, including Diana’s Sunken Garden 🪴 We also dropped into Cafe Diana across the road from the Palace. Diana used to pop in there occasionally and the walls are full of beautiful photographs of her, one being signed by her.

    After that we were finally able to unpack in our new home for the week in Battersea Park. It is a really lovely apartment. It is owned by an interior designer and he has done a beautiful job. The only downside is another three levels of stairs to climb! There were three levels of stairs last night and bringing luggage down this morning was so exhausting 😩 I’ve gotta tell you, the shine has gone off carrying heavy bags up and down stairwells in hotels, apartments and Tube Stations. My back is really telling me not to do it any more! It will be nice to just settle in one place for a week.    Read more

    Un dernier musée avant de partir

    Après avoir pas mal galéré avec nos valises dans les heures de pointe du métro 🥵, nous prenons un bon petit-déjeuner réconfortant dans un petit resto italien non loin de la gare.
    Départ ensuite pour le Natural History Museum, plus orienté famille mais agréable à traverser. Quelques pièces impressionantes nous y attendaient. 🦖🐋Read more

    I dropped off Kim, Deb, and Nikki at the airport before 6am this morning. They are continuing on to Northern Ireland, and I’m headed home. I only made one wrong turn without an additional navigator but got the rental car returned. The car rental guy inspected the left side of the car very closely, including the hubcaps and tires. Luckily, I haven’t hit a curb since the second day, and I managed to return it without any dents or scratches. After looking at the mileage, he found it auspicious that I had driven exactly 888 miles in two weeks. I don’t know that I’m lucky, but I am exhausted from having to pay close attention for 888 miles.

    Once I was approved to leave the rental return, I caught the tram out to the airport and flew to London. I took a bus from the airport to the underground. It was nice not to be driving, so I could enjoy the scenery. We drove by “Jack the Chipper” and I was sad that I didn’t know about that restaurant until now. While I waited for the subway, a group of about 10 young men, mid-twenties, walked up to the platform. They were fully decked out in Harry Potter outfits. Each one was a different character, with wigs and garb to perfection. There was even a Hermione with skirt, wig, and nicely trimmed beard. He looked happy to have drawn that straw. My favorite, though, was Dobby. The guy was bald and had huge ears glued to his head. At first I thought it might be a tour, but it wasn’t a tour vibe. I wanted to ask if there was a party at Hogwarts, but they didn’t make eye contact. I hope they enjoyed their Saturday night and wherever they were going.

    I rolled in to my hotel at Heathrow around 7pm. Unbelievably, it took me about as long to get from Edinburgh to here as my flight home tomorrow. I spent the evening packing and prepping for the long trip home.    Read more

    ins Zentrum von London gefahren.
    Dann kurz ums Eck und in den Hopp On/Hopp Off Bus gestiegen; inklusive einer kleiner Flusskreuzfahrt. 🤓👍

    Bummel bummel

    Nach dem tollen Ausflug nach Stonehenge und leckerer Pasta in Kensington waren wir noch etwas Bummeln ❤️

    Hier sind kurze Infos zu den Orten:

    Soho:
    Trendiger Stadtteil in London mit lebendiger Kulturszene, Bars, Theatern und LGBTQ+-Treffpunkten. Ursprünglich ein Rotlichtviertel, heute kreativ, kosmopolitisch und voller Restaurants und Musik.

    Carnaby Street:
    Ikonische Fußgängerzone in Soho, bekannt aus den 1960ern für Mode und Popkultur. Heute findet man hier stylishe Boutiquen, Flagship-Stores und trendige Cafés. Ein Zentrum britischer Jugend- und Streetstyle-Kultur.

    Oxford Street:
    Londons berühmteste Einkaufsstraße mit über 300 Geschäften, darunter Selfridges und viele Modeketten. Eine der belebtesten Straßen Europas, ideal für Shoppingliebhaber. Besonders belebt zur Weihnachtszeit.

    London Palladium:
    Berühmtes West End Theater in der Argyll Street, eröffnet 1910. Gastgeber zahlreicher Musicals, Shows und Konzerte. Ein legendärer Ort für britische Unterhaltung, u. a. mit Auftritten von Frank Sinatra und Elton John.

    Harrods:
    Luxus-Kaufhaus in Knightsbridge, bekannt für sein prunkvolles Interieur und exklusive Waren. Gegründet 1849. Bietet alles von Mode bis Feinkost. Eine echte Londoner Institution und Touristenmagnet.    Read more

    Hyde Park

    Der Hyde Park ist einer der größten und bekanntesten Parks Londons. Man kann ihn ganz großartig mit dem Fahrrad erkunden, die man dort überall einfach an Stationen mieten kann. Im und um den Hydepark gibt es überall zweispurige Fahrradwege.

    Ursprünglich ein Jagdgebiet von Heinrich VIII., wurde er 1637 für die Öffentlichkeit freigegeben. Er erstreckt sich über 140 Hektar und ist heute ein beliebter Ort für Erholung, Sport und Veranstaltungen.

    An der südlichen Grenze zum Kensington Gardens befindet sich das prachtvolle Albert Memorial, das Königin Victoria ihrem Ehemann Albert widmen ließ. Gegenüber liegt die berühmte Royal Albert Hall, eine Konzerthalle mit außergewöhnlicher Akustik und eleganter Architektur.

    Im Südosten liegt der Hyde Park Corner, wo sich bedeutende Denkmäler wie das Australian War Memorial und das Reiterstandbild des Duke of Wellington befinden. Direkt daneben steht der imposante Wellington Arch, ein Triumphbogen aus dem 19. Jahrhundert mit einer großen Bronzeskulptur.

    Natural History Museum

    Das Natural History Museum in London wurde 1881 eröffnet und zählt zu den bedeutendsten naturkundlichen Museen der Welt. Es befindet sich in einem beeindruckenden viktorianischen Gebäude in South Kensington. Das Museum ist für seine Sammlung von über 80 Millionen Objekten bekannt, die Themen wie Zoologie, Paläontologie, Mineralogie und Botanik abdecken.

    In der Hintze Hall, der großen Eingangshalle, hängt heute das spektakuläre Blauwal-Skelett „Hope“ von der Decke. Es ist über 25 Meter lang und symbolisiert die Bedeutung des Artenschutzes. Zuvor stand hier der beliebte Dinosaurier „Dippy“, ein Abguss eines Diplodocus-Skeletts.

    Die Dinosaurier-Ausstellung ist ein Publikumsmagnet. Besonders faszinierend ist das animierte Modell eines Tyrannosaurus rex, das realistische Bewegungen zeigt.

    Ein weiteres Highlight ist die Edelstein- und Mineraliensammlung mit Tausenden glitzernden Exponaten, darunter seltene Kristalle und der berühmte „Aurora Pyramid of Hope“ mit leuchtenden Diamanten in allen Farben.    Read more

    Tardis 💙

    Die blaue Polizeibox in London, wie sie noch vor der Earl’s Court Station steht, war früher ein fester Bestandteil des britischen Stadtbilds. Polizisten konnten darin telefonieren oder kurz Schutz suchen. Heute sind diese Boxen selten geworden – doch eine davon hat Kultstatus erlangt: Sie sieht genau so aus wie die TARDIS aus der Serie Doctor Who.

    Für Fans ist sie das Nonplusultra, weil die TARDIS in der Serie zwar durch Raum und Zeit reist, äußerlich aber stets wie eine solche Polizeibox aussieht. Die reale Box in London ist daher nicht nur ein Relikt vergangener Zeiten, sondern ein echter Pilgerort für Whovians – ein Stück Fernsehgeschichte zum Anfassen. Viele machen dort Fotos oder Selfies, um dem berühmtesten Raumschiff der TV-Welt ganz nah zu sein.    Read more
