Travelday to Lille - Hospital day

    April 22 in France ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

I woke up late just in time for the ferry. Yesterday, Gwydeon gave me a walking branch, and honestly, it helped a lot. Walking was still painful, but that branch made it bearable.

Ruben refused to leave my side. He stayed with me the whole ferry ride and even managed to get me a wheelchair. I don’t think I could’ve made it without him.

Meanwhile, Chris and Martin checked with the local promoter in Lille to figure out what medical options I had. It came down to either visiting the ER at the hospital or seeing a general practitioner on show day. After discussing it with Michael too, we decided on the ER, just in case I needed a scan or an x-ray.

Of course, the ER meant waiting. A lot of waiting.

We arrived around 19:00. I didn’t leave until about 01:00, and I left with barely any more answers than I had going in. They did take an x-ray, which confirmed that nothing’s broken. They gave me a walking shoe to stabilize it, so at least there’s that it’s more comfortable now, at least a little.

Still, I’ll need to have it checked again properly once we’re back in the Netherlands.

Ruben waited the entire six hours in a separate room, since he wasn’t allowed in. Six hours. Michael helped me translate with the doctor over the phone. I hadn’t eaten dinner, so by the end I was completely drained physically, mentally, everything.

I’ve never experienced an ER so unorganized, so incapable. It was honestly shocking.

    Lille

    July 27, 2024 in France ⋅ ☁️ 22 °C

Walked about 30 minutes to the Ghent train station, which was a bit laboured because i sprained my ankle a bit trying to exit the craziness of the festival the night prior. 30 minute train back to brussels and another 30 minutes to reach Lille, France. I was here to attend the Canada v Greece olympic men's basketball game

Walked from the train station into the old town with all my gear and sat down for a small break and then continued to my hotel. About 30 minutes total. The old town is really beautiful.

I wasn't able to checkin until 4, so i dropped off my bags and walked back to the old town to get some food and check out the quaint streets and sights. Wearing my canada shirt, i got heckled by many greek fans and surprisingly i didn't see any other canadians. But it was fun to interact in good natured ribbing.

My friend Alexandra was en route from Paris to join me for the game but her train endured massive delays because of numerous sabotages to the tracks. Many people here are thinking its russians doing it. Eventually i realized Alexandra wasn't going to make it on time for the game, so i contacted Charlie who lives an hour away in Bruges to see if he wanted to come to the game with me. 90 minutes later he arrived and off to the stadium we went.

The crowd was mostly greek supporters and they were really loud. But canada led the game from start to finish. Definitely a nail biting finish but canada prevailed, yay!!!

In the meantime, poor Alexandra still hadn't arrived in Lille. This whole game was her idea and she was so discouraged to not be able to attend. Took Charlie and i two hours to get back to the hotel around 1:30am and Alexandra arrived at the same time. Poor her. We all walked to the old town for a beverage and then charlie drove back to bruges and we crashed out too.

    Sightseeing Lille

    April 24 in France ⋅ ☁️ 11 °C

After leaving the Airbnb we went to visit a fortress in Lille but sadly it wasn't allowed to enter, as it's still a military location. We walked through the parks around it, with lots of birds and even more runners 😂
Then we went to see the center of Lille, where two students stopped us and asked us some questions for some home work about stereotypes and how tourists see the French people. We were nice but sincere: we think they are very proud of what they have (le plus belle.... Le plus grand... 😆) and also that everything is in French and sometimes communication can be difficult.

After some good food with the best company, we had to say goodbye to our German friends and continue our trip, while they went back home ❤️

To go to Lyon from Lille, we had to cross part of Belgium and also Luxembourg, and after a while and much rain we finally found a good spot to sleep.
    ----
Vam passejar pels parcs del voltant, on ho havia molts ocells diferents i, sobretot, runners 😂

    Showday Lille

    April 23 in France ⋅ ☁️ 10 °C

I finally got a long and good sleep, waking up around noon. I made my way towards the backstage, but it turned out to be quite a search, luckily Gerrity helped me find it. By then, the trucks had arrived (way later than planned), and they could finally start setting up the merch.

We decided not to do anything with the decorations to give me some rest — it’s a concession anyway.

I joined warrior training because Mitchel stepped in last minute to replace me. He even came all the way from his holiday in southern Slovenia. Really amazing of him.

The day itself was quiet, with lots of explaining to everyone understandable when you're walking around with a big medical shoe.

During the show, I watched a bit from the front of house. It gave me goosebumps seeing the show from a different perspective. It wasn't sadness that I wasn’t part of the warriors, it felt different this time. It wasn't that it wasn't my turn; it was simply that I can't , and that hits in another way.

After a few songs, I decided to call Bella, who's also going through a tough time at home. We gave each other some much-needed company; I really miss her a lot.

After the show, we had a cozy little gathering in our backstage area, which had this nice communal space. Then I headed straight to the bus and straight to sleep.

    Concert day in Lille!

    April 23 in France ⋅ ⛅ 9 °C

Woke up in Champigny and drove towards Lille under A LOT of rain. In Paris the traffic was so crazy, we lost maybe an hour and more there.

When we were close to Lille we stopped for a needed coffee and some food, and we celebrated Sant Jordi! This is the most beautiful day for many catalans, kind of our Valentine's day but less cheesy 😂 Couples give each other books and roses, and Rafa and me gave each other new and interesting books.

Afterwards we continued to Lille, to the Airbnb we booked with our German friends Sarah and Julian. We met there and after resting a bit we went to the venue (except Rafa who had to work and talk with a Spanish radio haha)

There weren't many people in the queue when we arrived, and after a long wait we could get in and got front row! But we couldn't be all together, Natasha and Rafa were separated from Sarah, Julian and me and that was a bit sad.

Anywayyyy Eivør was amazing as always, and Heilung was beautifully crazy 🖤 Rafa has better pictures of the show so I will probably upload more later or/and on instagram
    ----
Ens hem llevat a Champigny i hem conduit cap a Paris sota molta pluja.

    Lille

    September 10, 2024 in France ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

    August 18, 2024 in France ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

    Abends in Lille

    August 17, 2024 in France ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

    July 31, 2024 in France ⋅ ☀️ 84 °F

We didn’t get to spend a lot of time in Lille, but did take a walk by the Vielle Bourse - old stock exchange. A stunning building with a beautiful clock tower and the Opera nearby to admire as well. I would definitely come back and explore more if we had the chance.Read more
