    Von Hohenmirsberg nach Potsdam.

    Wer nicht weiß, wo Hohenmirsberg ist, hat nichts verpasst. Einer der vielen kleinen Orte irgendwo in Franken in der Nähe von Bayreuth. Wir haben eine ruhige Nacht verbracht und heute nach dem Kaffee (ohne Frühstück) eine lange Wanderung gemacht. Es war zwar eisig kalt, aber die Wanderung war super. Allerdings ging unser Plan nicht auf, nachdem wir in irgendeinem der kleinen Orte, durch die wir kamen, ein feines Frühstück zu uns nehmen. Denn in diesen Dörfchen gibt es nichts: Keine Geschäfte,keine Bäckerei, kein Café - nichts, niente, nada.
    Natürlich konnten wir im Camper frühstücken, aber es ist irgendwie schon Routine, dass wir im Camper Kaffee trinken und dann irgendwo gemütlich frühstücken.
    Also fuhren wir dann weiter Richtung Potsdam und haben irgendwo auf der Strecke Halt gemacht. Autohof. Nicht empfehlenswert...
    Gegen 17.00 Uhr kamen wir in Potsdam an. Für den Balú fanden wir einen super Parkplatz. Wir verbrachten dann einen gemütlichen Abend mit feinem Essen bei Thomas Bruder Michael und der Schwägerin Birgit, wo wir heute auch übernachten.    Read more

    Day 1–2

    Anreise 1.Teil

    Gefahrene Strecke: 386 km
    Endlich sind wir heute um halb elf zuhause losgefahren. ( Geplant war um 9.00 😆)
    Beim Start zuhause wars saukalt. (4 Grad)
    Unser erstes Ziel ist Potsdam, allerdings fahren wir heute nicht soweit , sondern bleiben auf einem Übernachtungsplatz in der Nähe von Bayreuth. Der Ort heißt Hohenmirsberg und wir stehen direkt an einem Aussichtsturm. Auch hier ist es saukalt und es hat gestern offensichtlich ergiebig geschneit. Schneehügel liegen überall mitten im Grünen.
    Im Wohnmobil haben wir mit Sekt den Reisestart begossen, gekocht, Heizung aufgedreht und es uns richtig gemütlich gemacht.    Read more

    Bayreuth

    We spent the day wandering around Bayreuth, the town where Rainer and Olivia live. Olivia had to go to her aunt’s funeral so Rainer walked around with us and told us some history of the town.
    Pic 1: Around the 1700’s Bayreuth had a very liberal marriage policy ie different classes could intermarry. In order to be married here you had to be living in Bayreuth so they had this small house. People would spend one night in the little house, become “official” residents of the city, and could get married the next day!
    We walked around the pedestrian shopping area downtown and stopped for bratwurst for lunch (pic 2). Pics 3&4 are the pedestrian shopping area.
    The rest of the pics are of the Opera House. It was built by a rich family that wanted a special place for their only daughter to get married. It was quite ornate and the building was only expected to last for a few years. Now almost 175 years later it still stands.
    The interesting thing is that it isn’t all, as it appears. Pic 5 is of the stage, it does not have all the columns and ornate features that your eye sees, really it was just painted wood or paintings on the walls. The architect was a master of illusion! The ceiling in pic 9 is not painted, but cloth was painted and attached to wood! The other pics really are fancy as they appear. It would be fun to sit in that wonderful atmosphere and listen to an opera!

    Rotmain-Quelle

    Länge Roter Main (Kulmbach - Quelle): 72km
    Länge Main (Mainz - Kulmbach): 527km

    Der Rote Main durchfliesst lehmhaltige Böden. Vor allem nach Regenfällen enthält er viel Schwebfracht, was ihm eine rötlich-braune Färbung gibt. Daher rührt der Namensbestandteil rot.

    … nun sitze ich an der Rotmain-Quelle und geniesse sein Wasser … 💦

    Dafür radelte ich von Mainz bis hier zur Quelle 580km in 10 Tagen.
    Ich bin seit 22 Tagen und 1‘400km unterwegs.
    Und meine Reise geht weiter - noch etwa 11 Tage und 700km bis Wien.    Read more

    Hello from Germany!

    We arrived to Eliza's home late Saturday. They welcomed us so warmly, fed us well and convinced us to stay at least two nights. That actually sounds good at the moment, so we decided to continue our journey on monday morning!

    So after spending a couple of nights here in Eliza's we are ready to keep going!!

    Saavuttiin Elizan luo myöhään lauantaina. Ne otti meiät vastaan tosi lämpimästi, syötti hyvin ja vakuutti että meillä täytyy jäädä ainaki kaheksi yöksi. Se kuulosti oikeestaan ihan hyvältä sillä hetkellä, joten päätettiin jatkaa matkaa maanantaiaamuna.

    Nut kahen huvin nukutun yön jälkeen ollaan valmiita jatkamaan matkaa!!

    Llegamos a casa de Eliza el sábado noche. Nos dieron la bienvenida muy calurosamente, nos dieron de comer y nos convencieron para quedarnos dos noches como mínimo. Nos gustó la idea así que pospusimos el camino hasta el lunes.

    Day 27

    Walking in Wagner’s Footsteps

    Today was our exploring morning in Bayreuth, and we made the most of it before heading west. Breakfast was at Kraftraum – a cool little café with great food, good coffee, and the perfect vibe to fuel our exploration.

    Armed with the phone app again, we set off on a self-guided tour of the city. Bayreuth truly deserves a spot on any travel bucket list. Its blend of baroque elegance, musical legacy, and unique architecture makes it a hidden gem for culture lovers. From palaces to opera houses, this city has a story to tell at every corner.

    Our route took us from the iconic City Church, with its two towers connected by a skybridge, along Friedrichstraße with its noble palaces and the renowned piano manufactory. We wandered past the New Palace and Palace Gardens, passed by the Wagner Museum and the composer’s final resting place, and wrapped things up with a visit to the crown jewel: the Margravial Opera House.

    I had booked us a guided tour through the opera house, and it was absolutely worth it. The intricate baroque details, the royal boxes, and the moment we stood on the actual stage? Goosebumps!

    And then… it was time to hit the Autobahn towards Frankfurt.    Read more

    Climbing in Frankenjura

    Happy Easter! A great opportunity for Fabi, Laura, Simon and myself to go on a 4-day climbing trip.
    The destination was a quite spontaneous one, as the April weather all over Germany was making it hard to find dry rock. So instead of doing some multipitches in Donautal, we ended up in the beautiful Frankenjura. It is not very surprising that this region is the most famous one all over Germany (and recognized far beyond). Aside from the impressive landscapes, there are almost endless options of climbing sectors in quality grit stone. The climbing guide book extends across 4(!) books, probably not including a large number of less well-known and newly established routes.
    My favorite route was "Keine Ahnung" (7+), a beautiful vertical climb with a few nasty underclings and monos (small holes that fit just one finger).    Read more

    Bayreuth Brews and Bavarian Charm

    April 21 in Germany ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

    In Bayreuth, we stayed at the Liebesbier Urban Art Hotel, part of the Maisel Bier-Erlebniswelt – a former brewery turned cultural hotspot. The entire area has been redesigned into a creative playground of beer, art, and architecture. The hotel itself is a stunner: modern, artful, and super cozy, with murals and installations everywhere you look.

    And this isn’t just a pretty place – in 2024, the World Beer Awards in London crowned the Maisel Experience World as “Best Visitor Attraction of the Year.” Not too shabby!

    For dinner, we wandered down Maximilianstraße and found our way to Wirtshaus Oskar. I went full Franconian spring with Spargel (asparagus) and a crisp Kellerbier, while Sanjay had a hearty combo of soup and Sauerbraten. The perfect way to wrap up a day packed with culture, bubbles, and horsepower.    Read more
