Walking the coastline of Clogherhead along the Irish Sea. The fishing village of Clogherhead is located on the east coast of Ireland in the County of Louth, approximately 70km north of Dublin. The village is home to the fishing industry with the waters of Clogherhead reputed as being some of the best fishing waters in Ireland. Long walks, eating wild blackberries on the headland, beautiful scenery, cold cold dips into the freezing Irish Sea followed by marshmallow chocolate. Hills of green which roll inta the sea, houses which fall towards the dunes with their coloured doors , peaked windows and songs of summer. Fishing trawlers, giant gulls and seals. Traveled to Limerick today, bought another suitcase 🤣 checked out Bunratty Castle, I lost Brian and ended up buying some amazing photograph prints off a local woman (it was mentioned my husband shouldn't have left me with the credit card). Then we were off to Galway for lunch and stumbled onto a pub that supported Celtic Football. Drove to Westport and then onto our accommodation at Cabra Castle and OMG it is spectacular.Read more

Baillieborough/Cavan

Out this morning to the registry office, ‘thwarted’ couldn’t find any records for our couple so couldn’t get cert. even though it is on Catholic Church records. Irish!!! Next stop, researcher at Cavan library. Very helpful and eliminated one family from our group. We have a couple with very common names and there several, same Christian and same surname married in the same year, insane!! Next stop cemeteries & more cemeteries. My navigator, I won’t mention who!!! took me up a dirt track only to meet a locked gate, had to back down about 800m, around corners on a steep hill, lovely, compensated by the lovely ripe blackberries. Went to see a crazy Irish women who almost literally dragged us inside and proceeded to bombard us with questions on family and rang half the neighbourhood. Then had to have a cup of tea and digestive biscuits!!! Wonderful woman with whom we will keep in touch, we meet another researcher in the morning, (organised by crazy Irish woman - love her to bits) another hilarious day. Knackered again tonight after wine and dinner here at Cabra Castle.Read more

Dies erschein mir als idealer Ort zum Chillen. Zugang zum Garten bzw. den Ruinen und die Anlage war kostenlos, sehr gepflegt, und der Besuch lohnt sich.

Mellifont Abbey

The location of the ruins — not far from Drogheda — and a photo I had seen showing a circular structure that looked quite unusual. These were the reasons why we headed to Mellifont Abbey today.

This Cistercian Abbey was consecrated in 1157. If the illustration of the original buildings is anything to go by, the place was quite impressive back in its heyday. Not much remains today, however. Nonetheless, the circular structure did not disappoint ... assuming you are a person who enjoys visiting and photographing ruins.

Turns out that the structure in question was built around 1200. It was a “lavabo” ... a place of purification where the monks cleansed their bodies and spirit prior to dining in the refectory hall. Today, the lavabo seems to have a split personality ... looking almost intact on one side and in total shambles from the other side.

That we had this photogenic place all to ourselves — even on “free first Wednesday — was a lovely bonus.Read more

Research in Bailieborough

Not too much to report unfortunately, researcher/librarian away yesterday so back today. We went to order certificates but the registry office is closed Wednesday, just our luck, so back today! Everywhere we go we we find that lunch time can be anything between 1-2hours and they shut grrrrrr. However we found a very helpful worker in the local cemetery who put us onto a real old cemetery that we didn’t know about, found lot’s of Lynch’s so now it is a process of elimination. We take different roads when going to little villages and are seeing the most wonderful countryside plus the VERY NARROW roads, had a couple of ‘hairy’ moments but all good. Weather is a bit crappy, cold yesterday and not much better today. Sharon had to buy a jacket. Oh well, we are in Ireland!!Read more

Wesport to Cabra Castle, Kingscourt

Straight from Westport to Mullingar for research so an uneventful trip mostly on the motorway. Into the council office/library for our search. No luck unfortunately although I was able to confirm the Flynn family were in this area. Have lots of tips from a historian/librarian who was helping us.
Back to our accomm. Upgraded so staying in the Hotel not the cottages. Very luxurious. Had a pre dinner drink outside followed by a light dinner. A magic place to be. Off to Baileborough today for more research on the Lynch family, good vibes in this search.Read more

Also... Urlaub wegen Krankheit abbrechen zu müssen, ist echter Mist. Aber in dem Zustand (der noch drei Wochen andauern wird, wie sich herausstellt) bringt es einfach nichts. Von Galway aus fahre ich also direkt auf wieder auf die andere Seite der Insel zu meiner Unterkunft nahe dem Flughafen.

Ein kleiner Zwischenstopp ist aber noch drin: die Mellifont Abbey. 1142 ließen sich irische und französische Mönche in dieser abgeschiedenen Ecke nieder und gründeten Irlands erste Zisterzienserabtei, die bis zur ihrer Aufhebung in 1539 die größte Abtei Irlands war. Die architektonischen Formen, die ein Baumeister aus Frankreich ersann, waren neu in Irland und beeinflussten viele künftige Klosterbauten (https://www.irland-highlights.de/info/mellifont…).

Von der Pracht des ehemaligen Klosters ist kaum etwas übrig geblieben, allerdings bekommt doch einen guten Eindruck von der Größe der Abtei.

In meinem Hotel angekommen, mache ich noch einen kleinen Strandspaziergang, das muss drin sein! Morgen geht es zurück nach Deutschland.Read more
