    Lissabon

    Lissabon ist eine der schönsten Städte, die ich je gesehen habe!
    Das Wohnmobil haben wir auf dem riesengrossen, fast leeren, kostenfreien Stellplatz in Seixal direkt neben der Fähre geparkt.
    2x fuhren wir mit der Fähre nach Lissabon. Heute kauften wir eine Tageskarte für Tram, Metro, Standseilbahn und fuhren beliebig umher. Die Fahrten mit den alten Trams begeisterten uns. In Lissabon geht es hoch und runter - die Strassen sind zum Teil sehr eng - erstaunlich wie die Trams hier durchkommen.
    Eine Tramfahrt war besonders erlebnisreich: zuerst stand plötzlich ein Car im Weg, welcher zuerst mühsam wenden musste damit die Trams kreuzen konnten. Dann stürzte ein ein kräftiger, grosser Mann plötzlich um weil ein alter Haltegriff aus Leder riss... Zuletzt musste das Tram anhalten weil ein vor ihm fahrender ElektroTuktuk keinen Strom mehr hatte. Trampassagiere halfen mit, den Tuktuk wegzuschieben damit das Tram weiterfahren konnte. Alles wurde sehr gelassen gehandelt.

    5/6 Lisboa ,first night in Portugal

    Moist cobblestone streets,
    Bells ringing from trolley cars,
    Slow Lisbon sunsets.

    My flight arrived in Lisbon at 6 pm. I had to do a lot of waiting for flight connections! It was a long time getting here. It's the waiting that is exhausting. I took a cab to my reserved hotel (Hotel Convento do Savador) and was delighted to find my room so neat and clean. Fatima is a helpful and kind hotel manager. She has patiently marked on a map the good places to eat and sights to see.
    I commented on the striking tile work on the lobby wall of the hotel. Now, mind you, it looked like an interesting design. But Fatima says, "You must take a picture of it, then tell me what you see."
    The image that ONLY comes out in a photo, not with the naked eye, is an image of Catarina do Portugal, Dutchess of Braganza. The artist has other pieces around Lisbon ( Pedrita.com, also on facebook Padrita Studio)
    Impressive work!
    Once I got showered and changed (even in my weariest state, the miracle work of a shower always renews me), I took a walk around the neighborhood. The young people are out drinking and howling with their friends. The trolley cars are winding up the steep, narrow streets clanking their bells. Night is folding down on us, and there's a vibrancy in this town.
    I'm told there is a train strike taking place tomorrow, and may last many days. That changes my plans for taking a train to Coimbra from Lisbon on the 9th to begin my walk on the 10th. I suppose I'll be riding
    the bus, along with the crowds and price hike, I'm sure.    Read more

    Head start on Camino day one

    April 26 in Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 59 °F

    I decided to walk the 8 km from Lisbon and return by metro to my hotel before I "officially" start my Camino tomorrow.

    On the way I visited the National Tile Museum.

    After the Tile Museum I was mostly walking through a kind of warehouse district, but discovered an area converted to house some small galleries and eateries.

    I ended my walk at the Parque das Nações before heading back to the hotel.

    For dinner I discovered a great restaurant right across the street from my hotel, which is located somewhat away from the central tourist areas of Lisbon. When I entered at about 6:15 all the tables had "reserved" signs on them, but I was early enough that they could seat me before those with reservations arrived. It was a Mexican restaurant with a Portuguese flair. Unfortunately, I forgot to take pictures of all the food, but I started with a shrimp tostsdita with avocado, then had yummy tortilla soup, a beef taco, and chocolate mousse with bits of crunchy meringue for dessert.     Lisbon

    Today we make the one hour and fifteen minute drive back to Lisbon. Drop the rental car at the airport and then head into the city to begin enjoying everything Lisbon has to offer! Pousada de Lisboa - Praça do Comércio, a place with a matchless historical personality and charm, from where the city expanded. After the 1755 earthquake, the Marquis of Pombal designed and rebuilt the entire square, including the building of the Pousada de Lisboa house of kings and a forum for the Ministry of Internal Administration.Read more

    Day 1

    First day in Lisbon

    After approximately 24 hours of travel I arrived by Uber to my hotel around 10:30 pm, ready to hit the sack.

    My room can best be described as a shoe box with ensuite. No much room to maneuver, but the bed is comfortable and the location is quiet.

    Showering is quite a challenge in such a tiny shower. Every time I move I bump the controls with my elbow or bum, changing the temperature to cold or scalding! I won't attempt to wash my hair.

    Although I was so tired it took me a while to fall asleep, but I slept for a long time, not waking up until after 11 am. Then I set off to wander around. My first stop was the Decathlon store, then next door to El Corte Inglés department store. It's such a huge store that I had trouble finding the exit - I could have spent hours wandering around somewhat lost.

    Then it was time to go to the newly opened Pilgrim Office where I got my credential, maps, and other useful information.

    The last time I was in Lisbon I watched as a tour bus drove right into the river. It wasn't an accident, it was an amphibious vehicle. I thought that then that it looked like a lot of fun, and that I should try it if I ever got back to Lisbon. So I bought a ticket and took a Bolt (similar to Uber) to the HippoTour meeting point.

    The land part of the tour was a bit ho-hum, but the tour guide on board was quite entertaining. The fun part was when we entered the river. It was a beautiful day, and a wonderful vantage point for the Belem Tower and other landmarks.

    Heute sind wir in den frühen Morgenstunden von Luxemburg nach Lissabon geflogen. Vom Flughafen ging es weiter mit der U-Bahn in die Innenstadt zum Busbahnhof. Ab hier sind wir mit einem Bus bis Vila Nova de Milfontes gefahren, wo wir morgen mit unserer Wanderung starten werden. Nachdem wir das Gepäck in unser Unterkunft abgestellt hatten ging es zuerst in eine Eisdiele und anschließend machten wir noch einen Spaziergang durch das schöne Städtchen.Read more

    Getting to Know Lisbon

    True to form, we spent the day wandering the streets of Lisbon. We tried to avoid the busy touristy areas as we love walking and exploring the narrow streets of the quiet neighborhoods.     Day 19 Lisbon

    Had a nice breakfast at the Hostel. Took my time and chatted with the friendly receptionist. She gave me a number of great suggestions with regards to what to check out and how to get around.

    I decided to start with the Cathedral magnificent. There were many small chapels surrounding the main body of the church Stained glass was very different.

    You were able to climb to a viewpoint at the back and that is where I could take a closeup of the Magnificent mandala stained glass.

    I then continued walking ( up and Up) to see the Castille de Jorge. I had a delicious custard tart on the way....but there was a huge lineup and I decided not to wait to get in. Too many people.

    I then walked up to the Circa de Jardin for a wonderful view of the city(my video)

    After that I went down and down to the water and had my lunch there

    I took the train to Belhem and captured the pics of the huge monument and Castille. They were sold out for the day at the Castille no worries I was fine with that.

    I hopped back on the Metro to go home ( around 1700). I found a supermercado and picked up some salad, coke and chicken for supper Really great day!!!

    Letzte Tage sind selten schön, letzte Urlaubstage sowieso.
    Früh aufstehen, früh packen und hoffen, dass alle Utensilien irgendwie wieder in die Reisetasche finden (den Überblick habe ich während meiner Maladie verloren). Früh stücken (allmählich geht auch wieder Salziges), früh mit Uber zum Flughafen fahren, Check-in, letzte Mitbringsel finden, im Sprühregen zum Flieger spurten, im Flieger sitzen, Adeus Lisboa. Die Welt von oben sehen, weiße Pyrenäengipfel, braun geschecktes Frankreich, azurblauen Genfer See, hellgrün-weiß getüpfelte Alb. Wie rasch etwas hinter und nicht mehr vor einem liegt! Am Echterdinger Flughafen in den Stuttgarter Ostermontag steigen, Abschied von Julian, ehe jeder in seine Richtung davon fährt. Mit der Straßenbahn. Durch Donnerwetter nach Hause laufen, die Reisetasche im Schlepptau wie ein folgsames, bei Bodenunebenheiten manchmal störrisches Hündchen.

    Und dann sitzt du wieder in deiner Kate und kommst dir ein bisschen vor wie der Fischer und siene Fruu. War das was? Beim Auspacken riecht die Wäsche noch nach dem Blumenduft der Casinha das Flores. Andenken tippen Erinnerungen an. Die Gelb- und Rottupfer der rumpelnden Straßenbahnen. Die Miradouros mit ihren immer neuen Ausblicken. Der Fado. Die schönsten Momente (in Mouraria). Und die lustigsten (in unserer Vinothek). Wie viel in drei Tage reinpasst. Und wie Vieles nicht. Das meiste haben wir nur von ferne gesehen oder von außen. Kein einziges Museum von innen, weder das Museum do Fado noch das Museum Nacional do Azulejo, noch irgendein Kunstmuseum. Von Sintra oder Cascais ganz zu schweigen.

    Verpasstes, Aufgeschobenes ist ein Grund wiederzukommen. Lissabon ist kein Vorort von Bonn, wie der Komiker Emil Steinberger in einem Sketch einst vermutete. Nicht nur deshalb hoffe ich auf die Neuauflage einer Sehnsuchtsreise in nicht allzu weiter Ferne. Vejo voce em breve, Lisboa!
