    Inverness

    Wir haben die Isle of Skye über die Skye Bridge wieder verlassen am Abend und haben unser bisher schönsten Schlafplatz mit direkter Sicht auf das Eilean Donan Castle gefunden😍 am nächsten Tag sind wir zur wahrscheinlich coolsten kleinen Bäckerei gefahren. „Manuelas Wee Bakery“ hinter ihrem Haus hat die Bäckerin (eine deutsche 😂@petra ihr habt doch einen großen Garten😉) einen wunderschönen Garten angelegt mit kleinen Hexenhütten und Wunschbrunnen etc. (siehe Video). Dann haben wir die Burg besichtigt und super viel über die Clans und Kriege gelernt! Die Burg gehört seid 1912 wieder dem Clan McRae welcher die Burg bis 1932 wieder restauriert und für die Öffentlichkeit aber auch für Clan Treffen und Hochzeiten selber nutzt. Der Clan McRae pflegt seid 100ten von Jahren eine tiefe Freundschaft mit dem Clan Fraser. Über dem Eingangstor einst ein Schriftzug auf Gealic zu sehen der liest: „As long as there is a McRae Inside, there will never be a Fraser outside“. Danach ging es weiter nach Inverness, leider keine besonders hübsche Stadt mehr da in den 60er Jahren im Zuge der Modernisierungsbewegung, sämtliche alte Steingebäude durch Beton Blöcke ersetzt wurden🥲 aber hier und da findet man noch ein hübsches Eck. Unser Highlight war der Leaky‘s Bookshop. Ein Seconhand Buchladen in einer alten Kirche. Am nächsten Tag sind wir zum Loch Ness gefahren und haben eine super umgesetzte Tour durch die ganze Geschichte rund um die Nessie Mythe gemacht im Loch Ness Center. Das coole ist dass das Center in dem alten Hotel ansässig ist, aus dem die erste Sichtung, welche die Mythe populär gemacht hat, stammt. Nun sind wir wieder auf dem Weg in den Süden über Glasgow zurück nach Nottingham. Auf dem Weg nehmen wir noch das Highland Folk Museum mit☺️Read more

    A train to Edinburgh

    Friday: this morning we will ride a 4-hour train from Inverness to Edinburgh. In Edinburgh we will climb a hill called “Arthur’s Seat” which may be the original place of Camelot. From 4:30-6:00 we have tickets for a tour of a chocolatarium!Read more

    Don't fall into the water

    Wer sich fragt wieso ich gut zwei Meilen durch ein muffiges Industriegebiet gelaufen bin, tadaaa ich hab eine Bootstour gebucht 🤗

    Sitzen ein Amerikaner, ein Österreicher, ein Inder und eine Deutsche im Boot - keiner ist reingefallen 😉

    Steve und Peter haben uns herzlich empfangen und nach einem kurzen Kleiderwechsel (hatte mich kurz gefragt wieso ich rumlaufen soll wie ein Eskimo) gab es eigentlich nur zwei Regeln:

    Rule 1: If you fall into the water, pull on the leash on your right shoulder

    Rule 2: Don't fall into the water

    Humor haben die beiden. 🤣

    Mit dem Speedboot sind wir dann los, bei gefühlten 200 kmh erschließt sich mir auch mein Anzug - es war bitter kalt und ohne wäre ich vermutlich erfroren 🥶

    Und tatsächlich hatten wir das große Glück und konnten zwei Delphine sehen 😍 ich war zu langsam mit der Kamera daher ist dies eine Erinnerung und ein Moment nur für mich ❤️

    Gut 2,5h sind wir durch die Bucht Morway Firth bis in die Nordsee geschippertz, trotz kalt einfach großartig. Robben, Möwen und ein paar für mich nicht zu benennende Wasservögel habe ich sehen können. Dazu saß Fort George und den Leuchtturm auf der gegenüber liegenden Seite.

    Btw. muss ich wohl aussehen wie eine Marathonläufer, da mich die Österreicher gefragt haben, ob ich auch teilgenommen hätte 🤣🤣

    Nun tappe ich mit meinem Wegproviant zurück nach Inverness und geh noch eine Runde Bummeln.    Read more

    Fort George 🕋🚁

    Fort George, ein Ort voller Geschichte und immer noch eine aktive Kaserne. Die Mauern zeugen von vergangenen Zeiten und militärischer Stärke. Besucher können in die Vergangenheit eintauchen und die strategische Bedeutung des Forts erkunden. Ein Spaziergang durch die Anlage bietet atemberaubende Ausblicke und lädt zum Verweilen ein. Ein Besuch in Fort George ist ein Erlebnis für die ganze Familie. Der Eintritt ist kostenlos.

    Inverness

    Yesterday was a travel day. Our first of four train trips in Scotland. We went from our first stop, Edinburgh, to Inverness. About a three hour ride through the Scottish highlands. It was a comfortable ride with the three of us seated at a table.
    On arrival in Inverness we walked the short distance to our next home. It too is an AirBnB and, although its in a very old and somewhat run down building, our accommodation is very nice. Roomy, full kitchen and appears to be recently, beautifully renovated.
    After unloading our luggage and a short rest, we decided to tour the city centre on foot and pickup some food for dinner. We swung by the tourist information centre, got some helpful ideas on what to see, and picked up a map. Unfortunately, Inverness. Castle is a no go as its under renovation and closed to the public. We did tour an interesting historical museum before heading to the grocery store to pick up some food for dinner.
    It was the start of the European Cup soccer competition, and Scotland was scheduled to play the host country, Germany, in a few hours. We thought we might go back downtown to watch it with the fans in a pub, but decided instead to watch it on the TV in our room. Probably the better idea as Scotland played poorly and got whacked 5-1.
    We started off our one full day in Inverness with coffees and breakfast in town. It cost us $40 for three scones, a muffin and two coffees. Don’t know that we’ll do that again anytime soon.
    Following the meal we walked to the bus stop nearby and caught the bus to Culloden where we visited the historic battlefield and museum. We decided to sign up for a guided tour of the battlefield. It was a beautiful day weather wise and having the guide explain the story of the famous battle that occurred there in 1746 made for a very enjoyable experience. Following the tour we explored the museum on our own.
    After arriving back in Inverness we picked up food for lunch and dinner and walked home to eat lunch before heading out to explore some more of the sights in Inverness. Emma decided to go for a run. Laura and I headed down to the Ness River and walked along both sides following a pedestrian pathway. We met up later with Emma in the city centre and visited an historic church, a bookstore inside what once a church, the oldest home in Inverness and followed along a few streets we hadn’t yet seen.
    We ended the day back in our accommodation where we made dinner and then relaxed, watching shows on our devices afterwards.    Read more

    Invergordon / Inverness

    Heute der 1. Stopp in Invergordon, einem ganz kleinen Ort im Norden Schottlands.
    Wir hatten einen Landausflug nach Inverness gebucht, wo wir 2,5 Stunden Freizeit hatten.
    Zwar auch ein überschaubarer Ort, den man schnell abgelaufen hat, aber wir haben ein paar schöne Ecken gefunden.
    Über Inverness ragt das Inverness Castle, das gerade grundsaniert wird.
    Zurück Richtung Bus entlang des Flusses Ness haben wir noch eine Brauerei entdeckt und haben da sehr leckeres, vor Ort gebrautes Bier getrunken.
    Zurück in Invergorden haben wir noch eine kleine Runde durch den Ort gedreht und haben dann den Nachmittag bei schönem Wetter wieder im bzw. am Pool verbracht.    Read more

    Cruise Day 9 - Invergordon, Scotland

    Arrived into Invergordon this morning to a very nice spring day. We left for our shore excursion at around 8am to go visit Loch Ness and ruins of Castle Urquhart. Was definitely the highlight for us so far on the cruise. Was good to see a bit more of the countryside as well.Read more

    A walk through Inverness

    We managed a sort of self-guided tour thru part of Inverness this afternoon. We saw the oldest house still standing in Inverness and Leakey’s Bookshop, which was a highlight for me. It’s Scotland’s largest secondhand bookstore and has everything from current day fiction to books over 100 years old (I even saw a few prints that were supposed to be over 300 yrs old)! A wood burning stove situated right in the middle keeps the place warm! It is SO cold today! It feels cold everyday, but our hosts actually said there’s snow in the forecast! We looked up the weather and it says possibly some tonight! 😳😲 We grabbed dinner-food from a grocery, earlier today, and are now back at our little B&B eating, planning and posting!Read more

    Shut up Kate!

    We have named our GPS system Kate. She can be quite insistent with her British accented directions and sometimes is quite wrong! Like today when she basically instructed us to take a right … down some stairs! 😂 Most of the the time we say “why, thank you, Kate.” Or “Will do, Kate”! But there are times that the round-about frustration comes to a head and we just say… “Shut up, Kate!” Then Andrea and I will laugh a little and carry on. 🤣 Today we started off with a very nice breakfast spread provided by our B&B hosts. Max and Angie have taken a liking to us and just before we entered the breakfast room, Angie whispered to us, “I saved you the table by the window. I told everyone you had reservation. Shhhhh” with a wink. 😉 We were both in need of some clean clothes, so finding a laundromat was a priority today. We also were able to visit the site for the Battle of Culloden. A wet marshy moor! Another interesting site we visited, nearby, was the Clava Cairns. Clava Cairns were a sacred burial site thousands of years ago! The burial chambers would have been rocks piled into a sort of igloo shape with one entrance and the entire tomb would have these standing rock slabs set intermittent all around them in a larger circle.Read more

    Headed to the Highlands!

    Leaving Stirling today, we headed south a bit to see the “Kelpies”. The Kelpies are a pair of monumental steel horse-heads that stand about 98ft high. They are relatively new sculptures, but are fast gaining notoriety and I can see why! Next was the visitor center for the Battle of Bannockburn. I’m so glad we took the tour which was another major learning experience for me. As I looked out over the beautiful hills and fields, it was hard to imagine the carnage that took place that brought about such a win for the Scott’s freedom. Afterwards we headed north to Pitlochry with a stop at Hettie’s Tea Rooms for lunch and some highly acclaimed tea and cheesecake. My “Rocky’s Rainbow” tea was soooo good! I especially appreciate how dog friendly many places in Scotland are. Made me miss mine, though. While I had plenty of scares at the narrow streets and small parking spaces, Pitlochry was definitely worth it! And, finally, after passing through some beautiful mountains dusted with snow and dotted with sheep, we arrived at Inverness (considered the capitol of the highlands)! We are staying at a darling B&B here for two nights.Read more
