Leisure day in Santiago and Milladoiro

    8. maj, Spanien ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

Met for dinner with Arlene’s original walking friend Jayme last night near our apartment. It was nice to see her again and as she went her own way once we arrived in Porto.

Today, Kenny, Arlene and I spent about an hour trying to find a taxi to drive us back the the Cathedral in Santiago trying to avoid the 4.5 mile walk there and finally successful. We were able to get inside the cathedral and appreciate the beauty and be amazed by the artistry and age.

We lit 4 candles in honor of my dad, my in-laws and my sister-in-law, Sharon with prayers for each of them. We toured the cathedral and saw Tomb of Saint James’ remains.

Had a wonderful afternoon with Jayme after she and Rich attended Mass. we celebrated with a bottle of bubbly and yummy snacks.

Tomorrow Kenny and I head to Barcelona. It will not be the same without all my travel companions. I so appreciate the time we’ve been together and all that we have shared. An unforgettable adventure. Thank you ❤️

    Made it to Santiago!

    7. maj, Spanien ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

Easy trek into Santiago today less than 5 miles from our apartment. I was surprised with so many pilgrims in route with us and how populated the center was. A very warm day and as excited to get to the finish line. The cathedral was incredible and massive!! The grounds were clean and well populated and saw few tour groups and kids school trips. Such a feeling of celebration and I was asked often to take group photos.

We were able to reunite with Jayme for dinner tonight who started this pilgrimage with Arlene back in Lisbon.

It has been a great experience and one I’m very proud of. I feel blessed to spend these weeks with my family and honestly impressed with my physical and mental strength. Still dealing with this cold and hoping for some slower days to recoup.

Arlene, Rich, Kenny and I are staying an extra night in Santiago tomorrow night. Noelle leaves in the morning to Fisterra and Arlene and Rich leave Friday to Paris and Kenny and I leave Friday to Barcelona for a few days. It has been wonderful to all be together for this journey. ❤️

    In O Milladoiro now

    6. maj, Spanien ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

Short walk from port of Vilanova this morning to 2 hour boat ride transfer to Padron, another old town with historic sites. It was quite chilly and I wondered why my backpack was lighter today and realized I was wearing 6 layered tops and still cold!!

Kenny, Arlene and I walked 9 miles today along countryside, beautiful maze like town, highways and hills and weather did warm up and was able to shed several layers. We were looking for a taxi towards the end and Kenny found one which saved us last 2 mile. I’m still fighting this cold and Arlene and Kenny now are sick so we were thankful to get here and take a nap.

Had a small mishap where Arlene left her cell phone in taxi and by sheer luck and perseverance we were able to reunite her with it. We say The Camino provides and it did for us today.

Noelle found this lovely 3 bedroom apartment in town and were able to pick up pizza, calzones and salad for dinner and treat of ice cream for dessert.

Easy day tomorrow as we are less than 5 miles to Santiago where we will enjoy the day leisurely and hope for extra rest. What a journey!!

    Santiago de Compostela

    31. august 2023, Spanien ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

Wandered around the old town today, sat in the plaza at the cathedral, attended the Pilgrims mass, visited the musuem and treated myself to a fancy lunch. I must admit I still surprised when my order comes out. Finished the day with gelato and a walk through the park. Now to pack for Switzerland 🥰💜🩷💞Læs mere

    Final Day 14 - 7.6km Santiago Compostela

    2. november 2024, Spanien ⋅ ☀️ 11 °C

The finish was short and somewhat anticlimactic. No finishing chute, no cheering section, just a lot of tired service workers and hordes of tourists ( many pilgrims but so many not). No problem. I presented my Camino credential/passport (with many stamps of places I visited) to the clerk and got my certificate. I’m an official pilgrim. I celebrated with cake and started thinking about what route might be next and who may want to join me.
It was a Saturday and a long weekend in Spain. I didn’t appreciate how popular Santiago is simply because of its beauty and deep religious and spiritual roots make it a popular travel destination. The cathedral is massive and beautifully maintained. They have 4 pilgrim masses daily. They receive about 1400-1500 pilgrims daily this time of year. In the summer it’s about 5000-6000 daily. You can see the line up for noon mass in one of my photos. It was so long and the 7:30’pm mass was also full. This afternoon toured the city and the cathedral and sat for a few hours watching tired pilgrims finish their journey. I’m a little sad to be done.

    Santiago de Compostela (Saturday)

    12. oktober 2024, Spanien ⋅ 🌙 63 °F

The highlight of our day was definitely to see the Botafumerio swing at the 12:00 mass. The Botafumerio is the largest incense censer in the world and swings nearly to the ceiling of the cathedral. It is about 4.5 tall and weighs well over 100 pounds. It used to be used at most masses (or maybe it was the Pilgrim masses, I'm not sure), but now is only used on holy days or when a group pays for it. They never tell ahead of time if this is the case, so you have no idea when you go to mass. Moriah and I went in quite early and literally got the best seats in the house for viewing it.

The pulley system was replaced in 1604, so I was hoping it would hold since we were right below it. Apparently it has flown off in the (far distant) past!

This incense burner has swung since the middle ages. Incense is a part of Catholic worship, of course (Psalm 141:2), but the practice is also tied to needing to cover the smell of unwashed pilgrims in the middle ages arriving from across Europe, and to hopefully stop the spread of diseases like the plague.

Tomorrow we will bus to the western coast of Spain (Atlantic Ocean) to Finisterre/Fisterra. More on that tomorrow!

    Santiago de Compostela (Friday)

    11. oktober 2024, Spanien ⋅ ☁️ 63 °F

We began our day by going back to the pilgrim office to have some things corrected on our documents. My Compostela had my name listed as Susannam, which they told me was the Latin form of Susan. Having looked it up, we felt like it should end in an H not an M, but they told me it was the accusative form. Far be it for me to argue Latin with them! Also, the starting date on our distance certificate indicated we started on May 9th instead of September 5th, a confusion between the European and American dating system. They printed us new ones.

We took a tour of the cathedral and its museum, which was very interesting. My conclusion regarding Catholicism versus evangelicalism is that Catholics do better with architecture and evangelicals do better with worshiping God alone.

We did lots of browsing and wandering in the old City around the cathedral, and ended our evening with a special celebratory dinner, thanks to Jeremiah and Lydia.

Now that we have officially ended the Camino, we only walked 8 and 1/2 mi today. 🤪

    Santiso to Santiago de Compostela

    10. oktober 2024, Spanien ⋅ ⛅ 54 °F

We made it! It was so satisfying and very moving to walk into Santiago! As we estimated, it was about 10 miles to get here this morning. (We have walked another 3+ miles within the city.) Although we had rain off and on this morning, it was not raining when we got to the cathedral. The only thing that was not perfect was that Nathan was not with me, which made me cry.

About a third of the way here our route merged with the French Route ("Frances"). The Northern Route ("Norte") is much less traveled and the alternate that we took the last four days was nearly deserted. Because of that, it was shocking to suddenly be surrounded by LOTS of pilgrims. It sort of spoiled the solitude of our own walk, but of course it's not all about me!

In transit - @ Santiago de Compostela

    27. september 2024, Spanien ⋅ ☀️ 14 °C

We stayed in the most delightful little Auberge (Last 12k) last night. Right on the Camino Frances trail! Arrived at midnight after around 45 hours in transit.
We got up early and had a little walk around the tiny village, took a few pics of the auberge and the tiny church across the road, where we got our first sello (stamp). Back to the auberge for breakfast and chatted to a Canadian lady on her last few kms of the Camino Frances. We asked for advice and she said: take your time, don't rush and remember to look back often, for a different perspective on how far you've come. Good life advice as well, methinks.

Then had to walk with our backpack and daypack for more than 1km to the bus stop. That was enough, so happy we booked a luggage transfer service! Now at the train station in Santiago de Compostela, waiting for our train to Ferrol.
