    Day 73b. Venice Airport

    October 16, 2019 in Italy ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

We navigated our way back from our free ranging stroll through the back streets of Venice, to a recognisable landmark by about 11:10. We figured it was about time to head back and jump on a vaporetto to the Airport. We wanted to ride the Grand Canal so we walked along the waterfront to St Marks Square and then followed the signs along the main drag to Rialto Bridge. The canal trip was great and then the boat speed across the lagoon to the airport.
We recovered out luggage from storage €28 and headed home.

    Day 73a. Venice, Italy

    October 16, 2019 in Italy ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

When in Venice we have a tradition with Julie Lewington and Neil Crossing to eat fresh strawberries by the Grand Canal. This was our priority after breakfast.
Venice, the capital of northern Italy’s Veneto region, is built on more than 100 small islands in a lagoon in the Adriatic Sea. It has no roads, just canals – including the Grand Canal thoroughfare – lined with Renaissance and Gothic palaces. The central square, Piazza San Marco, contains St. Mark’s Basilica, which is tiled with Byzantine mosaics, and the Campanile bell tower.
With this longer history you would think they could put in a few more sign posts to let you know how to walk around without getting completely lost. But no. We get lost everytime we move off the main thorough fare. In fact we can even get lost when we are on it. This even when Ron is normally a flaming homing pigeon.

Breakfast in Santa Sofia Cafe across from our accommodation. Followed by a final walk around the narrow walkways of the old city of Venice.
We took the orange line Alilaguna public water bus from the Rialto bridge to the airport via the Grand Canal.

St Mark’s Square was almost empty. It was cold and windy and threatening to rain. There were restaurants open and two small orchestras playing. It is still a beautiful and fascinating place.
