  • Road trip plan changed

    15 Jun, Kanada ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

Our original itinerary was significantly impacted due to my inexperience with camper trailer specifications. When booking the ferry from North Sydney, NS to Argentia, NL back in February, I mistakenly classified our stand-up-height camper as a "low trailer". The consequence? Our reservation was invalid, and we would be definitely denied boarding. Upon realizing the error, I immediately contacted the ferry office, but unfortunately, no “high trailer” spaces were available.
    Revised Travel Plan:
    - Canceled the original ferry booking June 18th overnight crossing to Argentia NL
    - Booked the June 16th ferry to Port aux Basques, NL (a shorter route landing on the island’s west coast)
    - Cancelled our Cape Breton National Park three nights reservation, stay at Whycocomagh overnight instead
Now, we’re reworking our Newfoundland road trip itinerary, though some planned stops may need to be adjusted.

    16–17 Jun, Kanada ⋅ ☁️ 12 °C

Right off of the ferry, in about 5 minutes drive we came to Newfoundland Visitor Information Centre searching for RV site information. Based on the advice from the staff there we should avoid highway driving after the sunset, for the road condition and the frequent roaming wildlife e.g. moose 🫎 and deer 🦌 .
From the map this would be the closet site we can get to before dark, although no reservation we decided to drop in for overnight stay.

  • Gander, Aviation Museum

    18 Jun, Kanada ⋅ 🌬 17 °C

Gander is a small town located at the northeastern part of Newfoundland island, with population around 11 thousand. On Sept 11, 2001 Gander International Airport (YQX) received 38 international flights and 4 military flights, Gander hosted 6,700 stranded passengers and crews. A piece of steel beam from the NYC burnt down twin tower was presented to Gander as significant symbol of thanks for the selfless role during that time.
Gander has been heavily related to North Atlantic aviation history, most of its streets are named after famous aviators.
During the WWII Gander was the transportation hub for the air ferry between North America and Europe. Some 10,000 military personnel were stationed here, and about 20,000 fighter and bomber flights stoped here en route to Europe. After the war ended, Gander became refuelling stop for transatlantic commercial flights.
By the Trans Canada Highway is the North Atlantic Aviation Museum. Albeit its name, the museum itself was rather small with limited exhibits. The contents were mainly related to the Gander area.

  • Northern Gannet & Moose

    19 Jun, Kanada ⋅ ☁️ 11 °C

Last night, heavy rain pounded the RV like drums, and strong winds rocked it like a small boat in rough water. This morning, the rain continued, and dense fog lingered.
Our plan was to visit Cape St. Mary’s Ecological Reserve—home to nesting northern gannets. After a 20-minute debate, we decided to go.
    The drive was challenging:
    - Long road construction zones
    - Steady rain
    - Deep, wide potholes
    - Thick fog reducing visibility
We finally arrived but couldn’t even see the visitor center from the parking lot. Other visitors confirmed the birds were visible, so we walked to the viewing spot.
In 2010 (15 years ago), we saw millions of gannets at the same spot covering the cliffs under clear blue skies. Today, the fog limited our view to a few hundred on the nearest cliffs—but it was still breathtaking.
On the way back, less than 5 minutes from the parking lot, we spotted a moose: first by the road, then on it, finally it vanished into the woods. A perfect end to the trip.

  • Story of Zongzi

    20 Jun, Kanada ⋅ ☁️ 22 °C

Yesterday we enjoyed an exceptional dinner at a Chinese restaurant favoured by locals in Lewisporte, Newfoundland, where we had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Li, the owner and chef with over 40 years of experience in Cantonese cuisine. The meal was superb, and the hospitality unforgettable—Mr. Li, his wife, their son, and son’s girlfriend Carol all joined us for a group photo before we left.
In a touching gesture, Mrs. Li gifted us four enormous homemade zongzi for our breakfast the next morning—a deeply Chinese tradition, where hosts often send guests home with something special, especially handmade foods. The sincerity of the gesture was heartwarming.

    This Morning’s Zongzi Feast
Following Mrs. Li’s instructions, we boiled two of the zongzi, and they were authentically Cantonese—rich, flavorful, and utterly delicious!

    About Zongzi
Zongzi (also known as sticky rice dumplings) are a traditional Chinese food, most commonly associated with the Duanwu Festival. They are made of glutinous rice stuffed with various fillings (sweet or savory) and wrapped in Indocalamus leaves (the most common wrapping material).

We dropped in this small dockside seafood restaurant after visiting Long Point Lighthouse. It is also a live lobster store, at less than half of the price back in Greater Toronto Area (GTA).
It is a bit surprising to see a waiting line of 5~6 ahead of us when we arrived around 1pm. In such a rather secluded area off of highway out of almost nowhere the restaurant is quite popular among travellers. While walking to be seated we chatted with bikers, listening them bragging about their beloved bike / trikes.
The meal was absolutely delicious, lobster was fresh, tender, with a sweet taste. Lobster meal comes with fries, a pop and dessert.

The store opens to the military personnel as well civilian visitors. Measuring by size, the museum is rather small, but with rich content. It showcased the history of WWII Ferry Command when US and Canada built aircraft were flown from North America to Britain, with Goose Bay, Labrador, playing a crucial role as a key refueling and maintenance stop. This command was initially a civilian operation that was later transformed into a military unit under the Royal Air Force. Goose Bay's strategic location made it a vital link in the North Atlantic air ferry route. This operation took advantage of permanent air current blowing from west to east at the high altitude of 6,000 meters with speed of 400 km / hr. A weather phenomenon became military asset.
