Headed home on a jet plane...

    April 29, 2017 in Canada ⋅ ⛅ 11 °C

It was unexpected and sudden...we found out that Andrea's grandma Audrey passed away last weekend. While tough to leave we made the call to come home for the funeral. We were disappointed to end the trip early by 3 weeks but knew it was for the best. There is always another time to visit but only once to say goodbye.

We travelled for just over a month, covering 4 countries (Thailand, Myanmar, Laos and Vietnam) and over 34,000km. It was quite a ride seeing such a different part of the world. Sitting in our home reflecting back, we see how truly lucky we are and how much we really do take for granted. It definitely gives a person a different perspective to see how people so poor but yet so happy and relaxed.

I think we may have caught something on this trip... I believe it is called "the travel bug" as we are already talking about the next trip. Till next time...stay safe, play safe and enjoy this epic world we live in!

    Randoms in Hanoi

    April 26, 2017 in Vietnam ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

Who said you couldn't fit the entire house on a bike?! It is crazy to see what people will all put on their bike. We saw one entire family...5 people - father, mother, and 3 kids on a scooter driving through the streets! Who needs a minivan?!

The flowers in SE Asia were amazing. Yo have such amazing flowers fresh and so cheap. Too bad we didn't have that back in Canada!?

One of our last nights in Hanoi we decided to hit up a bar and chillax with some hookah. The one thing we didn't get a chance to try was laughing gas. We saw all these Asians with balloons and couldn't figure out what they were doing with them.

    Halong Bay Cruise

    April 25, 2017 in Vietnam ⋅ ⛅ 8 °C

After 2 days of trekking in the mountains we figured it was time to relax aboard this beauty for a couple days cruising the sea.

We saw some of the most spectacular sights abroad. The Halong Bay is relatively shallow ranging from 10m to 50m in depth.

During the cruise we took a local fisherman of the area's bamboo boat to a cave to see the stalagmites.

Before dinner we tried our luck at squid fishing. Andrea showed up the boys with this monster squid! 🦑 Do you see the look on her face on how pumped she is!?

    Sapa Trek - Day 2

    April 24, 2017 in Vietnam ⋅ ⛅ 13 °C

After a not so good short sleep we were pumped for day 2 of our trek!

It continues to rain and made for the dirt roads to be slick and muddy. Jardin found out first hand! Haha looks like something shat on your head Jardin!?

The terraces cut into the mountain sides were epic! To see how they worked the land with water buffaloes and how the canal systems take water down the mountain to various rice paddy fields.

    Sapa Overnight Home Stay

    April 23, 2017 in Vietnam ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

After a 12km trek and climbing nearly 100 flights of stairs (according to the IPhone step tracker) we reached the village house where we spent the night. It was a priceless experience to spend a night in their home and to see how they live. We ate like kings as there was so much food for our group. And what better way to end a hard day of trek'in then with some "happy water" aka moonshine and "happy flower" aka marijuana. Our guide brought out not a couple grams but a couple pounds in full grocery bag!! 😳

We spent the night upstairs in the house on the floor under mosquito nets and was woken by the "Cock-a-doodle-doo" 🐓from the, oh dozen roosters in the village. But it was all worth it!

    Sapa trek - Day 1

    April 23, 2017 in Vietnam ⋅ ☁️ 8 °C

We weren't sure what we were in for headed to the northern part of Vietnam for a two day trek through the mountains but boy was it amazing! The rain and fog while made us like wet dogs it made the scenery almost mystical.

Apparently when your in the back country of mountains in Vietnam fields of weed are part or the norm! It is legal to smoke dope in Vietnam.

    Night train to Sapa

    April 22, 2017 in Vietnam ⋅ 🌙 22 °C

We took our first over night train to the northern city of Sapa where we are going to do a two day trek through the mountains. Aside from the beds being too short for Jardin the 8 hour ride was surprisingly not that bad...definitely better than what we thought.Read more

    Randoms around Hanoi

    April 22, 2017 in Vietnam ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

Egg coffee we learnt is an Hanoi tradition. So when in Hanoi one must try...boy were we surprised how good it was! It's condensed milk with egg whites and a few other's almost like a desert it tasted so good! One problem was it was a long ways down for Jardin to sit on the stools which were about 6" from the floor!

We were surprised with all the North Face shops in Hanoi and cheap prices...$30 CAD for a Summit Series parka which would cost over $600 back home. It says it's real Gor-Tex and has the North Face logo stitched on so that must mean it's real right?? Bhaha

The traffic was CRAZY! Scooters going in every direction and you can't walk on the sidewalks because that's where they park and have their shops set up on and if the sidewalk is clear then they ride their scooters down it!?

So we decided to hit up the back alley Pho restaurant for round 2 since we survived the first time and didn't shit ourselves. 😬

    First Night in Vietnam

    April 21, 2017 in Vietnam ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

We arrived in Hanoi tonight and boy has it been an experience... from the bartering with the cab/shuttle van driver to seeing our first accident where a car smoked a scooter (not surprised give the no rules crazy driving in SE Asia)...and to top it off Andrea took us to some back ally for pho for supper - which turned out to be pretty damn good despite the ambiance and having a scooter zoom by behind you every 5min.Read more

    Luang Prabang, Laos

    April 21, 2017 in Laos ⋅ ☀️ 35 °C

We found Luang Prabang to be a very quiet place with amazing views of lush green mountains. The view from our hotel room was pretty sweet...from the mountain tops to the lotus garden.

I always knew whiskey was poison...Laos whiskey proved that with snakes in their whiskey! Not sure if this bamboo bridge would hold up to N.A. engineering standards but was pretty neat to cross - probably would stay away if intoxicated! We felt like millionaires or more like had to be in Laos as dinner costed 173,000 Laos Krat! 😳💸Read more
